President’s Corner
It is 21 years since watercolour artist
Malcolm Whittley, and a group of fellow
Swaffham Rotarians with an interest in art, organised
an exhibition in Mundford, selling paintings to raise
money for charity.
Over the years the exhibition has moved to Swaffham
and expanded into a month-long Festival, showcasing
Norfolk creative talent, educating the public, and
continuing to raise money for good causes – over
£90,000 in total so far.
The recent collapse of a window at Oxborough
Hall led to a chain of events that meant that an
exhibition of embroideries, inspired by the 300th
anniversary of the birth of Lancelot ‘Capability’
Brown, had to be cancelled. Fortunately, the
embroideries are to be included in an exhibition
of work by East Anglian Embroiderers’ Guild
members to be held in the last week of October.
They will be on display in the Green Britain Centre
(next to Waitrose) as part of the Swaffham Visual
Arts Festival organised by Swaffham Rotary Club.
Looking at the Programme for our Visual Arts
Festival this year I am struck by the range of
venues that we have in Swaffham.
We start at The Nicholas Hamond Academy
on Friday 30th September with the illustrated
presentation by Peter Stevens on Car Design.
We then move to The George Hotel on Wednesday
12th October for Tony Bramley’s prize-winning
‘Suprematist’ photography, followed at the
weekend (15th/16th) by the Camera Club
Exhibition in the Drill Hall.
Thursday 20th October finds us in the Assembly
Rooms for Julia Stafford Allen’s guide to garden taste
and design through the history of garden visiting.
The following week the garden theme continues
in the Embroiderer’s Guild Exhibition in the Green
Britain Centre. Our film – ‘The Monuments Men’ – is
in the Community Centre on Tuesday 25th October.
Finally, we return to the Assembly Rooms for the
Festival Exhibition, preview evening on Friday 28th,
with viewing on Saturday and Sunday.
The range of venues shows that Swaffham does
not lack resources. The range of interesting events
in the festival programme shows that Swaffham
doesn’t lack resource. We hope that our Festival
patrons are equally resourceful!
