in spring, as are the sculptural and bright stemmed specimens in winter.<br />

Westonbirt’s collection of trees, plants and shrubs is vast, and worth visiting in any<br />

season. Two different areas comprise the site’s six hundred acres: the Old Arboretum is<br />

fairly level and has a family play trail, while the larger Silk Wood has some steeper slopes<br />

(especially near the entrance) but also benches to rest on. There are seventeen miles of<br />

paths throughout the arboretum and dozens of leafy glades with levels of accessibility to<br />

suit visitors on foot, in mobility scooters or with pushchairs. Wheelchair users, however,<br />

may find some of the bark trails off the beaten track hard to navigate, particularly after<br />

rainfall. Some of the trees’ identification labels are high in the branches but most signs<br />

are low-level.<br />

Powered scooters allow disabled visitors to freely explore the whole of Westonbirt,<br />

and using one is recommended – the visitor centre has several available to borrow (no<br />

charge), but it is recommended you call ahead to book one, especially in October and<br />

November. You can get advice on the best trail to choose from the friendly team of staff<br />

and volunteers, who will help you get the most out of your visit. There is also a handy map<br />

available on arrival. Check the website for events that take place throughout the year –<br />

from Christmas illuminations amongst the trees to the summer’s Treefest.<br />

The arboretum can get busy, particularly in autumn, so if you’re visiting on a weekend<br />

or a sunny day and want to secure the most convenient parking, arrive as early as possible.<br />

Westonbirt has a new Welcome Building with a car park offering 21 parking bays for<br />

disabled visitors.<br />

FOOD & DRINK aa Westonbirt Restaurant offers tasty hot and cold food in pleasant, relaxed<br />

surroundings (daily 9am–4.30pm). The Westonbirt Café serves takeaway tea, coffee and<br />

hot and cold snacks (seasonal opening 9am–4pm). Outdoor seating is available.<br />
