Chair Chatter: Sally Thackray ahead of today’s game
Good afternoon to everyone for today’s FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division fixture
against Nottingham Forest Ladies FC.
A warm welcome to all players, club officials and spectators who have made the journey from
the Midlands to be here today.
Today’s league fixture sees us up against an opponent who are in a similar position to
ourselves in the table, albeit they have two games in hand.
Last season both teams finished in a similar position. Notts Forrest are a well-established club,
and they will be looking to make their mark against us today and put some distance between
us.
We come into today’s game hoping to continue the winning streak from the last two games.
Some solid play saw us finish as 3-1 winners versus Leicester City two weeks ago, and last
week we were 6-0 winners against Crewe in the League Plate competition.
I have hardly written these notes this season without having to write about the sad death of
someone known to the club. Unfortunately this week is no exception.
I was very sad to learn of the death of Peter Horne last Saturday. Peter was a former head of
the Bradford City (men’s) Academy, and did much to establish and develop the Academy
under new FA guideline a few seasons ago.
Peter and I did a lot of liaising, and he was a good ally to have when dealing with facilities
issues at the old Rawdon Meadows ground.
Whilst he always had to look out for the interest of his Academy, he was always mindful of the
problems of others too.
Our thoughts are with his family as this difficult time. He will be sadly missed.
Enjoy the game,
Match Preview: Bradford City vs Nottingham Forest
City celebrate scoring against Forest last season.
Bradford City welcome Nottingham Forest this
afternoon, who sit just one place below them
in the table.
Current form
The recent form of these two sides contrasts
massively with the standings though.
City have won three of their last five.
Last week, they downed Crewe 6-0 in FAWPL
Plate competition, while their last two home
outings have resulted in 4-1 and 5-1 wins over
Leicester and Stoke respectively.
Forest, on the other hand, have lost all of their
last five games.
Tricky games against West Brom and
Blackburn have come recently, but a draw
with lowly Stoke and conceding five against
Huddersfield was disappointing for the
Midlands outfit.
Team news
Jess Graham remains sidelined for City, but
they do welcome back both Abi Lee and Jade
Brindle back this week.
Hannah Campbell, meanwhile, will be after a
fourth goal in three games against Forest.
She made an immediate impact off the bench
against Crewe last Sunday, scoring within two
minutes.
Previous meetings
These two have met six times in the FA
Women’s Premier League, and City have won
every time.
Last year, a 3-0 win at home and a 2-0 win
away saw the Bantams do another double
over Forest.
The pressure is on the hosts then, but so is the
confidence.
Ellie Olds: “It’s natural for us to play attacking football“
After finding herself in then out then in then
out of the team at the beginning of the
season, Ellie Olds’ fifth consecutive start last
week saw her play an instrumental role in
Bradford City’s 6-0 win over Crewe Alexandra
in the Plate competition.
Part of a solid holding midfield duo with
player-manager Charlotte Stuart, they
dominated Crewe and allowed them little to
no time on the ball when they did gain
possession.
The attack was on form and the defence was
as composed as ever, and the Stuart-Olds
partnership of the last few games was again
as strong as ever too.
Everything is clicking all of a sudden, from
between the sticks to going forward at the
other end, culminating in three wins from
their last five for City.
FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE | BRADFORD CITY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST | 8
Ellie Olds battles for the ball against Stoke City.
“It was a strong performance from us on
Sunday and that was reflected in the
scoreline,” said Olds.
“I think as a whole the team are feeling a lot
more confident and this is reflected in the way
we've been playing.”
She continued: “It's been a difficult start to
the season in terms of results, but we've been
playing well and now we're getting the results
to prove it.”
The thrashing of Crewe epitomised this.
Complacency could have played an unwanted
role as City made the traffic-plagued journey
down the M6, but instead it was a
professional display and a comprehensive win
to match.
Sunday’s results mean Bradford are just one
of three Northern Division sides left in the

Ellie Olds: “It’s natural for us to play attacking football”
competition. Leicester City, who they hit for
four last time they were at home, are another,
while the third is Huddersfield Town – who
they have exchanged positive and negative
results with this season.
The majority of teams left though are fourthtier
outfits, making the Plate a really winnable
competition for the Bantams – on paper.
“If we continue to play like that against the
opposition left, then I think we can go far,”
Olds believes.
The difference between City’s front line when
confident and when not is huge, as can be
seen by the contrasting form from the
beginning of the season to now.
The team have scored nine goals in their last
two home games, following that up with
Sunday’s rout.
With the Bantams playing good football and
getting results, the momentum is really
building up, and if this continues they are
certainly a favourite for the Plate.
That charge for silverware will be
spearheaded by an attack that cannot stop
scoring at the moment.
Ellie Olds rises highest to win the ball
against Stoke.
Asked whether there has been a shift in tactics
to be more attacking, Olds stressed that it’s a
style that City always try to play.
“We have a lot of strong and attack minded
players, so I think it's natural for us to play
attacking football anyway.
“We've just been managing to find the back of
the net more often in recent games!”
Today sees Bradford get back to league
matters.
They also adopt the role of favourites again,
having done so at Crewe.
A flawless record against Nottingham Forest
and recent winning form, much different to
their opponent’s run of five without victory, is
responsible for this.
However, City will again fight against
complacency and strive for professionalism to
get the win.
“I think it will be a close game, with both sides
really needing to get the three points. But in
this league you never know,” Olds said.
“If we continue to play the style of football we
have been doing recently and remain
confident, then I would like to think that we
will get the win.”
County Cup Draw: Title defence begins in Ossett
Ossett Albion are City’s first opponents in this year’s County Cup.
Bradford City’s bid for a fourth successive
County cup triumph will begin at Ossett
Albion in four weeks’ time.
The Bantams beat Leeds 6-0 in the final last
season, making it three wins on the bounce in
the competition.
The highest ranked team in the tournament,
they are the favourites to clinch the grand
prize again this term and they will be
overwhelming favourites to down their
second round opponents too.
Albion are second-bottom in the Southern
Division of the North East Regional Women’s
Football League, having failed to win any of
their opening five fixtures.
Albion do have fond memories of this
competition, having reached the quarterfinals
last year, but City will be more than
confident of a victory to start their title
defence.
If victorious, City will meet either Yorkshire
Amateur or Tingley Athletic in the third round.
City celebrate last season’s County Cup success, having defeated Leeds in the final.
Today’s opposition: Nottingham Forest LFC
Paige Crosby battles for the ball against Nottingham Forest last season.
Nottingham Forest Ladies Football Club was
founded in 1990, starting out in the East
Midlands League.
A steady start to life as a football club saw
them expand into junior teams as early as
1996, fielding U12s and U14s with the help of
two senior players.
The turn of the century then brought about
the club’s first major trophy, as they beat
Lincoln to lift the Premiership Cup in 2001.
Going from strength to strength, 2002 saw
Forest become a Charter Standard club and in
2003 they were promoted to the Midlands
Combination League.
Momentum continued when they won the
County Cup the following season, while
finishing second in the league—on just goal
difference—and reaching the quarter-finals of
the FA Cup.
Forest’s relationship with the men’s team has
only grown with their success too.
In 2004, the senior team travelled to the
States with the men in pre-season and, at the
end of the campaign, they gained promotion
to the FA Women’s Premier League.
While establishing themselves in the division,
Forest have also continued to strengthen their
youth set-up.
Their junior section was awarded Centre of
Excellence status in 2006/07, earning funding
from the FA as a result.
And after a solid sixth place last season, the
club are looking to build on their strong
foundations with another good finish this
year.
They may be on a tough run of form at the
moment, but they have proven themselves in
this division and will be difficult to beat today.
FAWPL Round-up: Sunday 18 October
The FA Women’s Premier League Cup and
Plate were the focus last weekend, with just
one Northern Division fixture taking place.
That game involved today’s visitors,
Nottingham Forest, who fell 2-0 to a West
Bromwich Albion side making the most of
those around them not playing.
Hazzana Parnell’s inspired introduction saw
her bag a brace off the bench with less than
15 minutes to play, meaning all three points
stayed in Walsall as Albion climbed to ninth.
Three Northern Division outfits were in
FAWPL Cup action, two facing each other.
Derby County and Stoke City produced a tight
and well-contested affair, which went to extra
time after Ellie May’s opener for the Rams
was cancelled out by Ashleigh Hayes.
The visitors got their noses back in front just
before half time in the added half an hour
though, and that was enough to send them
through to the third round.
Joining them there are Hull City, who caused a
significant cupset by downing Middlesbrough.
In the plate, all three Northern Division in
action progressed.
Bradford City did so most comfortably,
downing Crewe Alexandra 6-0, while Leicester
City also ran riot.
Rotherham United were brushed aside in a 6-
1 win, with the second half a masterclass from
the Foxes.
Two goals either side of half time looked to
have the Foxes on their way, before the
Millers pulled one back just past the hour to
make things a little nervy.
City didn’t panic though. Kayleigh Hillier and
Sophie Domingo scored in quick succession to
take the scoreline to 4-1, and the floodgates
had opened.
A fifth soon followed before Rebecca Carnelly
rounded off the scoring in the final moments,
adding the icing to the cake.
Huddersfield’s route to the next round was a
little trickier. Their clash with Guiseley went all
the way to penalties, the score reading 4-4
after extra time.
Katie Thompson opened the scoring for the
Tigers, before Boro pegged them back just
before the break as Emma Foster equalised.
The hosts were keen not to let that setback
affect them; substitutes Rebecca Beech and
Jasmine Whitwell helped City to a comfortable
3-1 win over a Boro side starting to falter.
Town never fell behind in the game, but
constantly found themselves pegged back by a
determined Guiseley as they threw away a 3-1
lead with 20 minutes to spare.
They came through in the end though, Olivia
DaCosta missing her spot kick in sudden death
to allow Huddersfield to progress.
FAWPL Preview: Sunday 23 October
Two all-Northern FA Women’s Premier League
Cup clashes mean there are just three fixtures
in the division this afternoon.
Just two weeks after they produced an
entertaining 2-2 draw on the coast, Fylde and
West Bromwich Albion meet again today in a
knockout format in the Midlands.
Last season’s champions are finding form
again, while the side in second are looking to
bounce back from three games without
victory in the league.
The other cup clash is anticipated to be a bit
more one-sided, as table-topping Blackburn
Rovers visit the team sat bottom of the
standings, Newcastle United.
Having said that, when these two met at the
beginning of the month, the scoreline read
just 1-0 in favour of Rovers – Saffron Jordon
the match-winner.
Newcastle haven’t played for over two weeks
though, and last time out they conceded six.
Blackburn haven’t played for two weeks
themselves, so they too will be raring to go in
a game that certainly intrigues.
As for league matters, Middlesbrough’s
hosting of Derby County is the tastiest fixture
as third welcome fourth.
After shocking everyone on the opening
weekend with that 6-0 thrashing of
champions West Brom, Boro have started to
falter.
On the end of a cupset at Hull last week,
Fixtures—Sunday 23 October:
Bradford City vs Nottingham Forest
Middlesbrough vs Derby County
Stoke City vs Leicester City
they’ve got something to prove and what
better game to prove it in than one against a
top of the table rival?
Derby didn’t enjoy their last league outing,
meanwhile, as they were surprisingly beaten 4
-1 by Huddersfield Town.
A gritty 2-1 cup win in extra time against Stoke
City got them back to winning ways though,
and they will be out to build on that.
Elsewhere, the Potters have a chance to
bounce back at home as they welcome
Leicester City.
The Foxes have shown inconsistencies this
season, with wins over West Brom and Boro
under their belts, but defeats to Newcastle
and Bradford also in their results.
After the Bantams denied them a fourth
successive league win two weeks ago, they
regained their confidence in a 6-1 thrashing of
Rotherham in the cup and will want to take
that into today’s game.
Stoke have endured a drastic slide down to
second-bottom though and really need to get
a positive result sooner rather than later.
Bradford City’s welcoming of Nottingham
Forest then completes today’s line-up.
City are on a fruitful run, winning three of
their last four games, which contrasts with
Forest’s.
The visitors haven’t won any of their last five,
so will need to be at their best to thwart their
confident opposition.
FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE | BRADFORD CITY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST | 19

Last time out: Crewe Alexandra 0-6 Bradford City
Bradford City cruised into the third round of
the FA Women's Premier League Plate
competition last Sunday, downing Crewe 6-0.
Once Shauna Legge opened the floodgates
midway through the first half, there was no
looking back.
City had been pushing forward with intent
prior to the first goal, but after they were
finding the final ball and the finishing touches.
Charlotte Stuart assisted the first, her diagonal
drive picking out Legge, who in turn beat
several defenders before arrowing a shot into
the bottom corner.
Then the player-manager got on the
scoresheet herself, capitalising on a shaken
Crewe to double the lead quickly after City
had gained it.
Stuart rose highest to nod in from a corner,
and just as quickly it became three when Lucy
Sowerby continued her rich vein of form.
The Bantams were flying. Playing some lovely
stuff, creating plenty of chances and not
allowing Crewe even a sight of goal, they got a
fourth before the break when Faye Boshell's
free-kick delivery fell for Laura Elford to slam
home her first of the day.
Having earned the right to play football, most
of the second half was spent with City
dominant but struggling to carve out as many
opportunities.
Crewe, playing for pride, really got stuck in,
keen to restrict the Bantams and maybe even
add a bit of respectability to the scoreline.
However, Hannah Campbell was eager to
make her mark off the bench and she did
exactly that with her first few touches just
past the hour.
The forward drove into the box with
directness, before drilling her shot across the
face of goal to make it five.
Elford would then round off the scoring for
the day minutes later, though she could have
been celebrating a hat-trick in the final
moments.
Legge was hacked down in the area and up
stepped Elford, but her powerful penalty was
fired over the bar in stoppage time.
It was hardly a costly miss though, with the
result beyond doubt even before half time as
City booked their place in the third round.
Results elsewhere mean only three other third
-tier teams remain in this competition now
too, with one of those still to play.
And so, if City are willing to work for it, the
FAWPL Plate is certainly a piece of silverware
that they could well lift at the end of this
season.

McCall’s men: No club too big for any division
Bradford City’s incredible following doesn’t mean they deserve to be a big
club. They must earn that right.
(Photo: Tom Gadd)
No club can turn around and say they are too big for a particular league, or a position in that
league. To be successful in football, you’ve got to work hard and earn it.
Whether it’s former European Cup winning pair Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa in the
Championship, or Blackpool and Portsmouth in League Two having been in the Premier
League five and six years ago – a big club isn’t guaranteed glory.
Just look at Chelsea last season. The Premier League champions didn’t crack their way into the
top half under week 28 of the season, while Leicester’s title triumph only reiterated the fact
the importance of hard work.
Yesterday, two clubs faced off at Valley Parade who many may view as too big for League One.
"For me, being a bit biased, it's the biggest game in this league because of the rivalry and the
size of the clubs,” said Bradford City boss Stuart McCall, as the Bantams welcomed his former
side, Sheffield United.
United were a Premier League club in 2007; City in 2001. The Blades top the attendance charts
this season with an average of 19,095 in their 32,702 capacity Bramall Lane. The Bantams sit
just behind in second, averaging 17,650 at Valley Parade, which holds 25,136.
But these two sleeping giants have endured many years of underwhelming their fans. Both
have enjoyed fruitful cup runs – Sheffield to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, Bradford to the final
of the League Cup – but their sole focus this season is promotion.
Some football fans may look at the two clubs and say, “They’ve found their level now really
haven’t they?”
But instead of chirping back that they are too big for League One, City and United’s task this
season is to show on the pitch that it’s not a case of all the gear, no idea.
