Chair Chatter: Sally Thackray ahead of today’s game
Good afternoon to everyone for today’s SSE Women's FA Cup match against Blackburn Rovers.
A warm welcome to all players, club officials and spectators who have made the journey
across the Pennines to be here today.
We met Huddersfield for the third time this season in the Plate competition in our last home
match. Today we are also meeting Blackburn for the third time in another cup competition,
the SSE Women's FA Cup. However, we will be striving to achieve a different result from that
against Huddersfield and in both the league games against Blackburn this season.
Blackburn are looking a very strong side this year, and it will not be a surprise to see them
heading the league table at the end of the season. Our matches so far have been closer than
the final scores might have suggested, and today’s encounter will be just as close as both sides
battle it out to be in the draw for the next round at the end of the game.
League form is not always relevant when it comes to cup competitions, and today gives us a
chance to put the league to one side and work hard to stay in the cup. We come into the game
after a convincing win against Stoke last week so confidence should be high, but we cannot be
complacent, we know we are in for a hard game today. We do wish Blackburn the best of luck
for the rest of the season, after today’s game of course!
I also want to take this opportunity to mention the sad news that Bobby Campbell, aged
60, passed away recently. Bobby was a legend at Valley Parade who scored 143 goals in two
spells at City, totalling seven years. He is City's all time leading scorer and was one of the most
colourful characters in the City team. He will be sadly missed and our thoughts are with his
family and friends at this difficult time.
Elsewhere, our 10 bet competition has come to a premature end as after last weekend there
were no entrants left! The previous weekend saw three contenders still in the competition—
Charlotte Stuart, Kirstie Hunt and Thomas Gadd. The prize money will be shared between
those three. Many thanks to everyone who entered and to Jess Pearson for organising it.
Enjoy the game,
Match Preview: Bradford City vs Blackburn Rovers
Bradford City welcome Blackburn Rovers this
afternoon in the First Round Proper of the SSE
FA Women’s Cup.
Current form
If you’ve turned up today to see a top quality
game of football, then you’re in luck—or at
least that’s what paper suggests.
Today’s clash features two confident, in-form
teams, and their football should reflect that.
Blackburn are yet to lose this season and are
on a winning run of 13 games, while City are
pursuing their third successive victory having
looked sharp and well-rested following their
first break of the campaign.
Team news
There’s mixed team news for the Bantams this
afternoon.
The good news is that Jess Graham is available
6 | SSE FA WOMEN’S CUP | BRADFORD CITY VS BLACKBURN ROVERS
for selection again, having been out injured
since September.
However, the bad news starts with loanee
Rachel Newborough not allowed to play by
parent club Doncaster Belles, as it would cup
tie her for when they enter the competition in
the later rounds.
Lucy Sowerby is the only injury, but one that
City have already come to terms with—not a
fresh one.
Previous meetings
These two have already met twice this season,
with Blackburn winning both games.
A 4-0 win here and a 4-2 win on their own
patch means Rovers have taken six points
from today’s hosts.
City will be out for revenge then in what is
expected to be another goal-fest, going by
past encounters.

Chelsie Stokes: “We want to control the game“
Chelsie Stokes gets stuck in
against Middlesbrough.
After losing to Blackburn twice this season
already, the high spirits and self-belief
Bradford City take into today’s game may
come as a surprise to some.
But anyone who watched their last encounter
– a 4-2 win for Rovers on home soil – will
understand.
There’s a lot of ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ in football, and
they offered positives for City last time these
two met.
Had the Bantams had a little more luck in the
first half and not been reduced to 10 in the
second, who knows what could have
happened.
Even opposing manager Gemma Donnelly
admitted her side were fortunate to lead 2-0
at the break, with the Bantams pressing high,
working hard and playing with no fear against
the league leaders.
“We did a really good job of staying composed
mentally and playing our game,” recalled
defender Chelsie Stokes.
“We controlled the game and played how we
wanted to.”
After watching that game plan pay dividends,
there’s no reason for City to opt for a different
approach this afternoon then.
8 | SSE FA WOMEN’S CUP | BRADFORD CITY VS BLACKBURN ROVERS
“The game plan will be to play our game and
not be scared,” Stokes said.
“We want to control the tempo and the game,
and stay composed throughout,” she added,
touching upon the team’s strengths in their
last clash with Rovers.
That meeting just over two months ago was
filled with unpredictability, but what we know
we’ll see today is two confident sides.
Blackburn remain undefeated this season.
They’re into the quarter-finals of the FA
Women’s Premier League Cup competition
and are only second in the league on goal

Chelsie Stokes: “We want to control the game”
difference – having three games in hand over
leaders Middlesbrough.
after the last time we played them,” Stokes
said.
On a 13-game winning streak, their only
dropped points came back in August in a draw
with Huddersfield.
City’s form may not be as incredible, but it’s
worth shouting about.
Victory today would be their third in a row,
with that week off clearly having aided them.
After playing 14 games in 12 weeks, the
Bantams enjoyed a natural break in the fixture
list, with it well-needed after two successive
defeats.
They look well rested and as sharp as ever, as
reflected in last week’s comfortable 3-1 win at
Stoke.
“There's definitely confidence going into this
weekend, not only with two wins but also
“We gained a lot of confidence by competing
with a team who are top of the table.
“We've really played as a team lately too
which boosts the confidence a bit.”
The unpredictability of the cup only adds to
the occasion.
Blackburn’s perfect start has to end at some
point, and the Bantams would love to cause
an upset.
With a place in the next round at stake, it’s
going to be a very competitive affair, with
Stokes expecting a “physical” and “fast paced”
game.
“We expect this to be a tough match,” she
said.
“But one that we can definitely win.”
NEWS
Our reserves have a new management team
and they take charge of the team for the first
time this afternoon. Danny Barker and Paul
Scott have earned the opportunity after
impressing in the junior set-up and today they
make their touchline debut as City’s second
team face their former boss, Jonathan Holden,
and his new Brighouse Town side.
We’re wishing a massive get well soon to
striker Lucy Sowerby, who will be out
injured until after Christmas. The striker
sustained ankle ligament damage in City’s
8-0 win at Ossett Albion in the County Cup
and is sidelined for around a month.
News coming out of the FA Women’s Premier League this week saw Fylde LFC deducted
three points for fielding an ineligible player in their victory over Newcastle United back in
September. The decision sees City climb the standings, leapfrogging Fylde into fourth.
Our ‘A’ Team are also in action today as
they take on one of their big rivals from
recent years, Wetherby Athletic. The two
have battled for league and cup titles over
the last few seasons and developed their
meetings into quite a meaningful fixture
on both parts as a result.
Formed in 1991,
Blackburn Rovers
Ladies have
enjoyed a
glorious rise to
the pinnacle of
women's football.
Today’s opposition: Blackburn Rovers LFC
Under the
supervision of the
club's Community Department and the
watchful eye of BRFC, the Ladies team needed
only seven seasons to reach the Northern
Combination League.
Following a move to the club's magnificent
£20m Brockhall training complex in 2003,
Rovers went on to lift the Lancashire Cup and
become the first team to win the Northern
Combination title with a 100% league record.
An undefeated Rovers set a Northern Division
record in 2005-06, winning 20 of 22 league
games and lifting the Lancashire Cup for the
third year running, whilst Andy McNally
became the first non-top flight coach to be
named Nationwide Manager of the Year.
Adam Lakeland replaced McNally at the helm
in January 2007 and guided the team to a
fourth successive Lancashire Cup and the
historic achievement of two successive FA
Women's Cup ‘Team of the Round’ awards, en
route to the semi-final stage.
Rovers endured a disappointing season in
2008-09, losing the Lancashire Cup final on
penalties to Rochdale, but they bounced back
in 2009-10. They won the Lancashire Cup for
the sixth time in seven seasons and their
strong end to the season included an historic
1-1 draw against Arsenal at Ewood Park.
Despite a superb
start to the 2010-11
season, Rovers were
relegated to the
Northern Division on
goal difference
following a final day
draw away to
Barnet.
Scott Rogers guided the team to the latter
stages of all three domestic cup competitions
in 2011-12, lifting the Lancashire Cup, and
made a late promotion push in the Northern
Division, only to eventually finish fourth.
After an impressive temporary stint the
season before, Gemma Donnelly took full
control and assembled a new-look squad for a
successful 2014-15.
Rovers finished third in the FA Women’s
Premier League Northern Division and
secured silverware by lifting the Lancashire
Challenge Cup for the first me in three years,
beating Morecambe 3-1 victory in the final.
2015-2016 saw Rovers towards the top of the
table again, finishing third in the FA Women’s
Premier League Northern Division with an
increased points tally.
Rovers were able to retain the County Cup
and the return of a reserve team was also a
success as they would go on to win the
Reserve League Cup.
This year has already proven to be a milestone
for the club too. Rovers’ highly reputable
Centre of Excellence was granted a tier 1
status as a Regional Talent Centre, the highest
level available.
SSE FA Women’s Cup Preview: Sunday 4 December
Bradford City’s clash with Blackburn Rovers
today is one of five all third-tier clashes in the
SSE FA Women’s Cup.
Last season’s Northern Division champions
West Bromwich Albion welcome Fylde in one
of the picks of the round, while another
encounter between two of Bradford’s league
rivals sees Derby County visit Huddersfield.
Staying in Yorkshire, Bradford’s local rivals
Guiseley Vixens welcome Nottingham Forest
and we could well see an upset.
The Vixens currently top the division below,
while Forest are struggling at the bottom of
the third tier.
Another local rival of City’s, Brighouse Town
play host to fifth division Peterborough
Northern Star in a game they will be more
than expected to win.
On the rise Sheffield United will play at
Bramall Lane against Leicester City’s
Development side, while the blue and white
side of the Steel City – Sheffield Wednesday –
visit Radcliffe Olympic, who are two divisions
above them.
Moving down South, Cambridge United could
also cause an upset this afternoon as the
South East Division One leaders host the side
bottom of the division above, Queens Park
Rangers.
United’s league rivals, Luton Town are
enjoying good form too and will present a
tough challenge to their own Premier League
opposition, Portsmouth.
The London derby between Charlton and
Crystal Palace should be a very competitive
one between two third tier sides, while West
Ham and Coventry provide another tough to
call game between two league rivals.
Wednesday and Leicester’s development side
make up two of the group of five lowest
ranked sides left in the competition.
Leicester have one of the best chances to
progress, with Sheffield United only one
division above them, while Regents Park
Rangers are the only ones granted a home tie
to potentially give them an advantage.
They welcome fourth division Keynsham Town
this afternoon.
FAWPL Round-up: Sunday 27 November
A narrow 3-2 victory over Derby County took
Middlesbrough to the top of the FA Women’s
Premier League Northern Division last Sunday.
Bianca Owens’ 13th goal in 14 games put Boro
ahead, but not for long. Nicole Dale equalised
less than five minutes later as the Rams aimed
to bounce back from a surprise cup exit at
lower-league Chester le Street Town.
However, instead they would fall to a third
successive defeat by the same scoreline which
Boro beat them in the reverse.
Emily Scarr put the visitors ahead again just
past the hour, while substitute Ellie Dobson
doubled that lead.
Ellie May pulled one back for Derby off the
bench to make for a nervy finish, but Boro saw
out the result to move to the summit.
The big battle at the bottom, meanwhile, saw
Nottingham Forest come out on top as they
downed Newcastle United 5-1.
The Toon Army are four points adrift at the
foot of the table now, with Annabel
McKechnie’s seventh minute strike
immediately putting them on the back foot in
the game.
Katie Lowder added another before half time,
while Charlotte Broad and Catherine Beaver
16 | SSE FA WOMEN’S CUP | BRADFORD CITY VS BLACKBURN ROVERS
had Forest 4-0 up before the hour.
Sophie Williams pulled one back for United,
but Georgia Gladwin restored the hosts’ four
goal lead in the dying moments.
Result—Sunday 27 November:
Derby County 2-3 Middlesbrough
Huddersfield Town 1-6 Leicester City
Nottingham Forest 5-1 Newcastle United
Stoke City 1-3 Bradford City
Elsewhere, Leicester City ran riot in
Huddersfield in a result that did anything but
follow the recent form of both sides.
It took the Foxes only five minutes to break
the deadlock through Kim Farrow, and Shauna
Cossens would double that lead before the 15
minute mark.
Town captain Kate Mallin pulled one back
before the half hour mark, but Leicester
restored their two goal lead within a minute
as Farrow bagged her second of the day.
Sophie Domingo’s penalty made it four before
the break, while another for her and a header
from Lauren Impey rounded things off nicely
in the second period to take Leicester into
third.

SSE FA WOMEN’S CUP | BRADFORD CITY VS BLACKBURN ROVERS | 19

Last time out: Stoke City 1-3 Bradford City
Level on points prior to kick-off, but separated
by a dominant performance at full time.
Bradford City brushed Stoke aside last Sunday
to complete their first ever league double
over the Potters.
Ahead of today’s huge cup tie with Blackburn,
City flew out of the blocks as Hannah
Campbell - fresh off the back of six goals last
week - broke the deadlock inside two
minutes.
The floodgates slowly opened as Campbell
followed up that emphatic finish with her
second of the day, and Abi Lee added a third
just before the break.
As is usually the case with heavy half time
scorelines, Stoke tightened up after the
interval and City took their foot off the gas a
little, allowing the Midlands outfit to grab a
consolation late on.
But the Bantams didn't need any second half
goals to secure a result that had already been
put beyond doubt.
Knowing that a win could take them as high as
third, City approached this game with the
right mentality and were rewarded
immediately.
Despite downing their opponents 5-1 in the
reverse, they showed no complacency and
instead were ruthless from the off as
Campbell clinically converted within seconds
of the first whistle.
With their confidence high as Stoke's heads
dropped, City really made their mark on the
game from there.
First to every ball and not shying out of any
challenge, they made it increasingly difficult
for the Potters to create an opportunity to
respond.
And if any complacency started to creep in, it
was quickly shut out when a goalmouth
scramble at the away end provided City with a
wake up call.
Less than five minutes later, it was two.
Charlotte Stuart and Shauna Legge were
rested for City’s County Cup clash the week
prior, and the two combined on their returns
to give Campbell the chance to make it two -
which she finished with no hesitation.
Last time out: Stoke City 1-3 Bradford City
Keen to get in on the act, Lee linked up with
Laura Elford to catch Stoke out once more
while they were still licking their wounds after
goal number two.
A superb ball from the striker found her
teammate, and Lee in turn found the back of
the net with composure that suggested
anything but it being her first strike of the
season.
The midfielder's flair and creativity had caught
the eye for the entirety of the first half, and it
continued to do so after she broke her duck.
Linking up well with Campbell on her left, new
signing Rachel Newborough on her right and
fellow midfielder Stuart, Lee was at the centre
of a number of half-chances created for City
to add to their tally.
But Stoke made the most of their opportunity
to regroup at half time and looked a lot more
solid in the second period.
Campbell struck an effort just wide past the
hour, but that was the closest the Bantams
really came to grabbing a fourth - and that the
forward herself came to bagging another hattrick.
Instead, the Potters would pull one back late
on, narrowing the deficit to a more
respectable two goals even if it didn't do them
any favours with regards to getting a result.
The points were City's, and they were enough
to lift the visitors into fourth after Derby's 3-2
defeat at home to Middlesbrough.
More importantly, the result means back-toback
wins for Bradford and gives them real
momentum going into today’s cup clash.
