Chair Chatter: Sally Thackray ahead of today’s game
Good afternoon to everyone for today’s FA Women's Premier League Plate competition fixture
against Huddersfield Town Ladies FC.
A warm welcome to all players, club officials and spectators who have made the short
journey from Huddersfield to be here today.
Almost unbelievably, today’s fixture is the third time we have met Huddersfield this season,
and we still have the FA Women’s Cup to be drawn in which we could yet face each other
again.
I recall last year our FA Cup match against Huddersfield when the prize for the winner was an
away trip to Yeovil!
I don't think either team will be wanting a repeat of that, and hopefully the outcome for
today’s victors won't be such a drastic journey.
As ever, league form goes out of the window with Cup competitions, and the same is also true
of our meetings with Huddersfield when the 'local derby' factors also have an impact.
What I do know is that it will be a competitive game, with both sides looking to progress into
the next round of the competition. So hang on to your hats!
Elsewhere I’d like to wish good luck to our Reserve Team, who are in action today away at
Blackburn Rovers.
That will be a difficult game for our girls, as Blackburn are going strong across all teams this
season.
Hopefully they can put on a positive performance and get a result to match.
Enjoy the game,
Sally
Match Preview: Bradford City vs Huddersfield Town
Hannah Campbell scored
when these two last met;
that game ending 2-1 to
Town.
Bradford City welcome Huddersfield Town this
afternoon in the last 16 of the FAWPL Plate.
Current form
Both teams come into this game off the back
of defeats last Sunday.
Sarah Dobby and Katie Nutter are likely to
feature for the visitors.
Previous meetings
These two have already met twice this season,
with both enjoying a win apiece.
City were denied a fourth successive victory
by leaders Blackburn Rovers, while Town were
upended by second placed Middlesbrough.
That snapped a winning run of their own,
which had stretched to five games in all
competitions.
Team news
City have no fresh injury concerns ahead of
this game, with just Jess Graham remaining
sidelined after an ankle injury earlier this
season.
The Bantams’ ‘keeper Charlotte Oates faces
her former side again today, while ex-City duo
6 | FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE PLATE | BRADFORD CITY VS HUDDERSFIELD TOWN
Bradford were victorious on home soil thanks
to a terrific strike by Lucy Sowerby, whereas
Huddersfield won on their own patch after
turning around a 1-0 deficit at the beginning
of October.
It’s not the first time that a cup competition
has required them to face each other three
times either.
The last two seasons have seen them clash in
the FA Women’s Cup as well as twice in the
league, the local rivals meeting with surprising
regularity in the knockout competitions.
City won both of those FA Cup games—3-0
last season and 3-2 the year before.

Abi Lee: “We can’t let the occasion get to us“
Very rarely can a team come off the pitch
having lost a game, but still be able to afford a
smile.
Bradford City endured a day where everything
went against them in Blackburn last Sunday.
Two dubious fouls led to two even more
dubious goals for the hosts, before Laura
Elford’s second yellow on the hour rubbed salt
in the wounds.
However, from start to finish, even when they
were playing with 10, the Bantams
dominated.
City, and Abi Lee above, have certainly endured their fair share
of frustrations this season, but are finding real form now.
togetherness, especially after going down to
10 men—we still didn’t give up.”
The 4-2 loss denied City what would have
been a fourth successive victory, but while
they can’t carry winning form into this
afternoon’s game, they have momentum in
other departments.
“The way each of us wanted to work for the
other person is perfect going into the
Huddersfield game,” Lee explained.
“It’s a game where attitude and mentality is
key to make sure we get the result.”
They took the game to the league leaders in a
fearless manner and put on one of their most
impressive performances so far.
“We showed something we haven’t shown in
previous games in that we kept going and
didn’t go up,” said midfielder Abi Lee.
“The way we wanted to work for each other
throughout the whole of the game showed
This couldn’t be truer. Huddersfield also come
into the cup clash off the back of defeat, but
in otherwise good form.
They were 1-0 up against Middlesbrough last
Sunday and well on track for what would have
been a sixth win in a row.
However, two goals in the final two minutes
by Boro’s Rebekah Bass thwarted them in
8 | FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE PLATE | BRADFORD CITY VS HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

Abi Lee: “We can’t let the occasion get to us”
the most dramatic style.
Add to this the two close encounters between
these City and Town we’ve already seen this
season, and the psychological factors will
certainly play a part today.
For City, it’s about ensuring they are sharp,
switched on and professional in their
performance, as that’s what can earn them
passage into the quarter-finals.
“It’s always a competitive game and that’s
something that’s guaranteed,” Lee said.
“We just need more of the same of what we
have been doing in recent weeks really, to get
the win.
“Key to that has been not giving up when we
get the first goal—something at the beginning
of the season we weren’t doing.”
That was certainly the case when these two
last met.
Abi Lee in action against Derby County.
City won the first clash 1-0 here at Eccleshill
United courtesy of a Lucy Sowerby strike, so
when they made the short journey down the
M62 a few weeks later, they knew were more
than capable of doing the double over their
local rivals.
The Bantams dominated proceedings on
Town’s own patch too and they deservedly
broke the deadlock just before the hour
through Hannah Campbell.
However, seven minutes later Huddersfield
equalised and eight minutes after that, they
went 2-1 up.
It was a really difficult result for City to take—
that frustration added to by the troubling
fortunes the team were having in terms of
injuries at the time.
This time round though, City have just one
player sidelined—Jess Graham still out with an
ankle problem—and they are on their
favoured home patch.
Their last three games here at Eccleshill
United have ended in three wins, with 15
goals scored and just two going in at the other
end.
It’s no surprise then that there’s an aura of
confidence around City when they are here,
and those high spirits will be important today
as they attempt to down a Huddersfield side
also enjoying their football.
“If we play how we have been in the past few
weeks, I’m confident as a team we can get the
result,” Lee said.
“We just all need to make sure that we have
that confidence and that we go into the game
playing football like we know we can.
“It’s just about not letting the occasion affect
us.”
Reserves: City out for revenge in Lancashire
Away from Eccleshill United today, Bradford
City’s reserves make a similar trip to that
which the firsts did last Sunday as they face
Blackburn Rovers.
City lost 4-2 seven days ago in Lancashire to
the table-topping Rovers, despite an
impressive and encouraging display.
Laura Gadd, pulled off two minutes after being
introduced having ruptured her ACL—meant
the trophy would not return to West Yorkshire
after a two year absence.
City go into the game today in high spirits,
having won their first league game on their
third attempt last weekend.
The reserves are out to get a bit of revenge for
their clubmates today then, even if it’s over a
different set of Rovers players.
Many of the players have their own score to
settle from last season though, when City
were beaten to the Reserve Cup by Blackburn.
Only a few weeks after a very tight league
affair in Bradford ended all square at 2-2, the
final was set up nicely between two of the top
three in the FAWPL Northern Reserve division.
But a combination of Rovers’ quality and City’s
poor luck on the day—the team’s only sub,
Goals from Keavy Smith and Rebecca
Sherrand gave the Bantams a more
comfortable victory than the 2-1 scoreline
suggests in a local derby with Guiseley Vixens.
City’s schedule has been rather unkind this
season, with it having been very stop-start so
far—some teams in the division having played
twice as many games as them already.
They will be raring to go today then, and
they’ll have to be up for it as they take on a
Blackburn side who have only lost once in
their six games.
cup winners last season. (Photo: Clive Jones)
Today’s opposition: Huddersfield Town LFC
Huddersfield Ladies FC
were formed in June
1988 and joined the
North-East Regional
League Division Two
where, in their first
season, they won the
League Cup and were promoted to Division
One as champions.
Over the next few seasons there were signs
that an exciting team was beginning to
emerge and the 1992-93 season saw them
finish third in the league and as runners-up in
the League Cup.
At the end of that season, Huddersfield Ladies
merged with Huddersfield Town Juniors,
becoming Huddersfield Town Ladies FC.
The 1993-94 season saw the first team carry
all before them, losing only once all season as
they did the treble—winning the league, the
League Cup, the Yorkshire Cup.
The following season saw the first team retain
that league title, winning all of their 16 league
matches, scoring 101 goals in the process.
But after an incredibly successful start, they
would endure tough times.
Eventually Town were relegated twice over
successive seasons to the Yorkshire and
Humberside Premier League.
However, in the same period a lot of time and
effort was invested in producing a new crop of
talented young players from within their own
junior ranks.
During the 2006-07
season, the first team
finished second in the
first season of the
North East Regional
Women’s Premier
Division.
In the 2010-11 season the club won the
NERWPL and the cup as they gained
promotion to the Northern Women’s
Combination League under the management
of Mickey Booth.
After 14 years in charge, Mickey decided to
step down as first team manager at the end of
the 2012-13 season.
Three excellent coaches were appointed with
Glen Preston as manager, and Ashley Vickers
and Fraser Green as his assistants for the 2013
-14 season.
Their first season in charge couldn’t have gone
much better. They won the Northern
Women’s Combination League title by a
margin of eight points, gaining promotion to
the FAWPL Northern Division.
In their two seasons since promotion,
Huddersfield have finished fifth and eighth
respectively.
Vickers now manages the team, with Baz
Arjomand and Tom Conway as his assistants.
The trio are doing a terrific job so far this
term, and today they are out to bounce back
from defeat last Sunday that denied them
what would have been a sixth successive win.
FAWPL Round-up: Sunday 30 October
There were only four fixtures last weekend,
but that didn’t stop the FAWPL North
throwing up a few surprises.
Shock result number one came on the West
Coast, where second-placed Fylde were
knocked into third after defeat to Stoke.
The Potters hammered a struggling
Nottingham Forest 5-1 in midweek to end a
run of six games without a win, and their
confidence was on show at Mill Farm.
The hosts applied most of the first half
pressure, but an Ashleigh Hayes double saw
Stoke go in at the break 2-0 up as they ended
the opening period with a flourish.
Fylde struggled to create much in the second
half, frustrated by a strong Stoke defence who
limited them to shots from range.
City even nearly added a third, Danielle Brown
producing a stunning save to deny Hannah
Keryakoplis, but ultimately it didn’t matter as
they took home an unlikely three points.
Shock result number two came in the North
East as bottom side Newcastle United edged
out Leicester City, 1-0.
The goal that decided the game was more
than worthy of doing so too.
It came from the left boot of Steph Ord, the
Toon midfielder stealing the ball back in
Leicester’s half before firing it into the top
corner from all of 30 yards.
Results—Sunday 30 October:
Blackburn Rovers 4-2 Bradford City
Fylde 0-2 Stoke City
Huddersfield Town 1-2 Middlesbrough
Newcastle United 1-0 Leicester City
Leicester enjoyed a good start to the
campaign, but have recently seen their form
dwindle—this result epitomising that.
Elsewhere, there was something of a surprise
in West Yorkshire too. After a run of five
successive wins, Huddersfield were brought
back down to earth by Middlesbrough.
Boro had won just two of their last five, and
their luck showed no sign of turning when
Clare Helm opened the scoring with an own
goal.
However, Rebekah Bass would save the day,
scoring two goals in the final two minutes of
the game to turn things around and give Boro
a terrific 2-1 victory.
FAWPL Preview: Sunday 6 November
Two league, two Plate and three Cup games
make up the FAWPL North agenda this week.
Sticking with league matters, two of last
week’s most impressive sides face off in the
North East.
Newcastle United and Stoke City caused the
big upsets last Sunday, and they will look to
pick up where they left off today.
With Nottingham Forest not in league action,
even a point will take Newcastle off the
bottom, while a draw suits Stoke nicely too —
who would climb three places, to fourth.
The other league encounter is similarly
exciting, as second placed Middlesbrough
welcome third-placed Fylde.
Despite their lofty positions, neither are in
great form recently and will look to put their
inconsistencies behind them to close the gap
on still unbeaten leaders, Blackburn Rovers.
Moving onto the cup and sticking with the
table-toppers, Rovers take on Loughborough
Foxes this afternoon, who were relegated
from the third tier last season.
The Foxes are flying in the Midlands Division
One and will go into this game full of
confidence, even if they are the underdogs.
Derby County and West Bromwich Albion are
also huge favourites in their cup games, as
they too face lower league opposition.
Fixtures—Sunday 6 November—League:
Newcastle United vs Stoke City
If any, West Brom look the most likely to be
upset, the out-of-sorts Northern champions
facing a Wolves side who have lost just one
league game all season.
Derby’s opponents, Chester le Street Town,
are sixth in the Northern Division One.
Finally, the other Plate game away from
Eccleshill United today sees Leicester up
against Chorley, who have lost only once in
Northern Division One this season.

Last time out: Blackburn Rovers 4-2 Bradford City
Photo: Colin Shorrock
Bradford City were only a slice of luck away
from recording a superb result at tabletopping
Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.
The dominant side throughout, the Bantams
were frustrated to see two contentious
decisions against them lead to goals
conceded, while a similarly controversial
sending off for striker Laura Elford hindered
them going forward in response.
But the characteristics on show by City, the
way they came together to fight for every ball
when little was going their way, meant
everyone could be positive at full time.
Fearlessness was going to be key for the
Bantams as they searched for a result that
would upset the pre-match odds. The way
they came out of the blocks though, showed
they could bring plenty of it to the table.
Lucy Sowerby was a livewire from the off, with
Abi Lee pulling the strings to create some
early chances as City started brilliantly.
The ball spent almost all of the opening half
an hour in Rovers' half, if not their defensive
third, as Bradford pressed well out of
possession while being direct on the ball.
Blackburn's pacey attack had been kept
relatively quiet. City were sweeping up nicely,
full-backs Shauna Legge and Chelsie Stokes coordinating
their surges forward while Faye
Boshell and Paige Crosby positioned
themselves perfectly to deal with any threats.
But this was an attack with several players
already in double figures for the season. Ella
Toone and Saffron Jordan had been almost
non-existent for the first 30 minutes, but
talented players can make an impact even
when this is the case - as the two combined to
break the deadlock.
The second goal was more devastating
though. A penalty was given moments after
Rovers’ first, and the controversial spot-kick
was dispatched to double the deficit almost
immediately.
Last time out: Blackburn Rovers 4-2 Bradford City
Frustration grew when Charlotte Stuart's wellstruck
effort hit the bar, but not scoring
before half time perhaps helped Bradford.
They went in at the interval with the emphasis
on refocusing, and were incredibly sharp out
upon the restart.
Barely two minutes had gone when a patient
team move in the area resulted in Lucy
Sowerby drilling the ball across goal and into
the far corner.
City's frustration seemed to have been put to
bed with this goal, while Charlotte Oates' save
down the other end straight from the restart
felt like it could be a pivotal moment in the
game.
There would be a game-changing minute in
this fixture, but it wasn't that one. It came
right on the hour, as City conceded a third and
were reduced to 10.
After waving away appeals for a Blackburn
free-kick on the left wing, the referee came
back to it following much delay—on the
advice of his assistant on the opposite side.
The resulting set piece, typically, produced
Rovers' third goal of the day and the
aftermath saw Elford dismissed in a similarly
contentious manner.
Playing half an hour with depleted numbers
away at the unbeaten league leaders? A
daunting task, to say the least.
But City didn't see it like this. They had been
on top, they knew they were capable of
creating chances even with this disadvantage
and, most importantly, they were willing to
work that little bit harder to do so with 10
players.
An applaudable graft by the Bantams gave the
impression that the game remained 11 versus
11. Hannah Campbell summed up the drive
and determination even when the chips were
down, taking on Blackburn's entire back line
late on only to be denied a stunning solo goal
by a good save.
Toone's similar effort at the other end did give
Blackburn a fourth, but Ellie Olds responded
to this with a looping header late on,
narrowing the deficit to two once more.
A difficult day out brought it's frustrations. It
wasn't a bad day at the office, but a day in
which City's luck was out.
The character test Bradford endured,
however, was passed with flying colours.
