Chair Chatter: Sally Thackray ahead of today’s game
Good afternoon to everyone for today’s FA Women's Premier Northern Division fixture against
Wolverhampton Wanderers. A warm welcome to all players, club officials and spectators who
have made the journey from the Midlands for this afternoons match.
Wolves were promoted back to this division this season, and have had a difficult few fixtures
so far. It's far too early to say how any teams form is going to be yet, but I am sure that Wolves
will be looking to get some points on the board today.
I know we will be looking to build on the strong performance from our last league game
against Nottingham Forest, and the close victory against Fylde last weekend. So a good game is
in prospect.
Our Reserve team kicked off their season last week with a defeat against Blackburn Rovers.
Blackburn were the team to beat last season in this League, and looked a strong side. Today
the Reserves are away at Newcastle in the first round of the Reserve League Cup.
Off the field, both Friends of Bradford City and the Bradford City Trust have kindly agreed to
sponsor a player.
We are very grateful to them for their kind support. We are in the process of getting all the
player sponsor details updated and integrated into the website, social media and our
programme.
I'm hoping this will be completed very soon, and certainly by the next home game as far as the
programme is concerned. Many thanks for your patience with this.
There are still opportunities available to sponsor individual players or teams, please get in
touch if you are interested and can help at all. (sally@bcwfc.co.uk)
Cheer the girls on today!
Enjoy the game,
Bradford and Wolves met at Valley Parade in the 2013-14 season.
Bradford City welcome Wolverhampton
Wanderers this afternoon in the FA Women’s
Premier League Northern Division.
Team news
The Bantams welcome Player-Manager
Charlotte Stuart back into the team this
weekend, after she missed Sunday’s game due
to stitches in her eye.
Paige Crosby remains sidelined with a knee
injury, Laura Elford is suspended after last
week’s red card, while Yasmin Ayub is hoping
to shake off an injury picked up in midweek.
Jordane Allison returns after impressing for
the reserves last week, as does Emily Cassidy.
The midfielder is back in the fold following a
strong display at Blackburn, as well as a good
performance in a midweek training friendly.
Current form
Wolves come into this game fresh off the back
6 | FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE | BRADFORD CITY VS WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS
of a shock cup defeat to Liverpool Marshalls
Feds, the lower-league outfit 2-0 winners.
The Midlands outfit have already lost both
their league games so far, without a point on
the board.
City are too awaiting their first league win,
and are in good spirits after beating Fylde on
penalties in the cup.
Previous meetings
These two have not met since 2015, when City
were 10-1 winners in a season that saw
Wolves relegated to Midlands Division One.
Bradford enjoyed high-scoring wins in their
four meetings with Wanderers over the 2013-
14 and 2014-15 seasons, including a 4-0
victory at Bradford City AFC’s Valley Parade.
Paige Crosby, injured today, Faye Boshell, now
assistant manager, and Player-Manager
Charlotte Stuart, all featured that day.

Katy Woodcock: “Our comeback shows our massive spirit“
Katy Woodcock slots home City’s winning spotkick
in the cup victory over Fylde last week.
(Photo: Paul2Paul Photography)
Katy Woodcock couldn’t speak high enough of
the spirit in the dressing room after Bradford
City’s comeback win over Fylde in the cup last
weekend.
The Bantams were 2-0 down going into the
final five minutes of the game, but goals from
substitutes Laura Elford and Ellie Olds took
the tie to extra time.
Elford then equalised to take the game to
penalties, after Fylde went 3-2 up, where
three saves from Nat Saunders allowed
Woodcock to win it in sudden death.
“When you're behind and there's so little of
the game left to play, the pressure is really
on,” said the defender.
“But I wasn't surprised at the come back
because throughout the second half we
looked threatening and we were creating
chance after chance.
“No one in the team lost the belief that we
could pull it back and I think that's why we
did.”
She continued: “I was buzzing to get the
winning goal and still am!
“I didn't really give myself time to get nervous.
“When we knew it was sudden death I
remember Jess [Graham] saying, "right girls
someone's got to step up now" and I just
started walking towards the goal.
“It wasn't my winning penalty, it was the
whole team's. We deserved to win that game
simply because of every single player's solid
Katy Woodcock: “Our comeback shows our massive spirit”
performance.”
Woodcock continued to praise the work ethic
of not only the entire team, but the entire
squad, with all three goals last week coming
from substitutes.
“The impact of players off the bench shows
that the whole squad is giving 100 per cent
which is so important,” she said.
“I think it really helps players on the pitch
mentally when you know you have game
changers coming on from the bench.
And they will be hoping to build on that to get
their first three points in the league, with
Woodcock full of praise for the spirit the team
are showing this season.
“The comeback definitely shows a massive
amount of spirit that the team has,” she said.
“We aren't afraid to keep battling and keep
creating, even when we do go behind.
“It takes every person on the field to have that
kind of belief, otherwise comebacks like the
one on Sunday don't happen.”
“It also shows we have strong management
tactics coming from the sideline,” she added,
with Player-Manager Charlotte Stuart making
her presence felt in the dugout.
Stuart could not feature due to stitches in her
eye from a knock suffered the week before
against Nottingham Forest, but was more than
capable of playing a
part in her role.
“I'm sure there's no
better feeling for
managers when the
decisions they have
made really do pay off,
which they clearly did
on Sunday.”
The penalty shootout
victory was City’s first
win of the season,
following defeat at
Leicester and a draw
with Forest.
Photo: Paul2Paul Photography
She continued: “For me it comes down to the
personalities we have in the squad, including
the management.
“Everyone is so passionate and we all want
the same thing and that is to win games
because if we don't, the journey home isn't a
very nice one.”
Reserves: City bidding to bounce back today
Bradford City's reserves surrendered an
early lead to lose 3-1 at the home of the
champions, Blackburn Rovers, last Sunday.
The Bantams got their season opener off to a
flying start when Rhianna Wright headed
home inside the first 10 minutes, applying a
deft touch to Emily Cassidy’s free-kick.
It was a fantastic start for a City side with six
debutants, not including the two in the
dugout as Toni Butcher and Meg Lawson took
charge of their first competitive outing.
Otherwise, City started to invite pressure and
individual mistakes gifted Rovers chances.
Goalkeeper Katie Bailey was on hand to make
a number of important stops, with substitute
Sophie Moulden also coming to the rescue
with a goal line clearance.
Blackburn should have added to their lead
with their striker through on goal with 15
minutes remaining, but poor decision making
saw her unable to round Bailey to finish as the
'keeper somehow prevented a third.
But they would gift Rovers the chance to go in
at the break ahead, conceding a free-kick in a
dangerous position and then a penalty, both
of which the hosts profited from.
City ended the first half with a flurry of
opportunities, but had their chances of
coming back hindered by a handful of second
half injuries.
Cassidy brought about Bradford's best chance
of a second half equaliser, the skipper hitting
the bar with yet another well struck free-kick.
Rovers would get that insurance goal though,
with City failing to clear from a corner and
dealt their punishment when the ball was
powered into the top corner from the right
hand side of the box.
But the scoreline was harsh on Bradford
overall, with lots of positives for Butcher,
Lawson and the team in their first competitive
game together.
Today, the Bantams visit Newcastle United in
the first round of the FA Women’s Premier
League Reserve Cup.
Today’s opposition: Wolverhampton Wanderers
promotion back to the top flight.
The 2006/07 season was a difficult one,
seeing the club relegated to the Midland
Combination on the last day of the season.
Wolverhampton Wanderers WFC have risen
from modest beginnings to become one of
the Midlands’ best known clubs.
They were formed in 1975 as Heathfield
Rovers, then became Wolverhampton &
Wednesbury Tube before taking on the name
of Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1993. That
season saw them promoted to the top flight
of women’s football - the FA Women’s
Premier League National Division—where
they spent two seasons before relegation.
In 1999 Wolves Women were incorporated
under the Companies Act with several
influential local business people joining the
board, including BBC presenter Jenny Wilkes
(Chair) and former England Women’s Cricket
Captain Baroness Rachael Heyhoe Flint.
The club developed a strong youth
development programme, with players such
as Rachel Unitt, Jody Handley and Emily
Westwood going on to represent England.
Aston Villa’s European Cup-winning Captain
Dennis Mortimer was appointed Manager in
2000 and was in charge of three Premier
League seasons, narrowly missing out on
A landmark move in 2008/09 saw the women
join the youth teams in being taken on board
by Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, as part of
Wolves Community Trust.
The 2011/12 season saw Manager James
Astle’s three year plan come to fruition as his
team did the double. They won promotion
back to the FA Women’s Premier League
Northern Division, where they would stay for
two years before relegation to Midlands
Division One in 2014/15.
Wolves entered a new era in 2015/16 under
the guidance of Manager and Junior Director
Steve Cullis, proud of his family link to the
legendary Wolves Manager Stan Cullis.
With talented youngsters moving through the
ranks, the team achieved a second place finish
in Cullis’s first season in charge.
Meanwhile at junior level the club was
awarded a new FA Girls’ Regional Talent Club
licence, supporting the identification and
development of players with elite potential as
part of the England Talent Pathway.
In October 2016 Cullis took on the role of
Player Development Manager for the RTC,
with Tim Dudding named senior manager.
With both men working together to develop
the player pathway from Under 18s to
seniors, Dudding developed a strong squad
comprising a mix of youth and experience.
Hard work and dedication paid off and saw
the team promoted back to the FA Women’s
Premier League Northern Division in 2017.
FAWPL Round-up: Sunday 3 September
Wolverhampton Wanderers were on the
wrong end of a shock result on Sunday as
lower-league Liverpool Marshalls Feds
knocked them out of the FA Women's Premier
League Cup.
Goals from Carla Lee and Chantelle Thompson
either side of half time gave the Northern
Division One side victory, taking them in to
the next round of the competition.
Guiseley Vixens and West Bromwich Albion
both almost suffered the same fate, as fourth
tier sides took them both to extra time.
The Vixens and Solihull Moors were goalless
after 90 minutes, and even after they went
ahead in extra time through Danica Roberts,
the hosts drew level thanks to Carly Davies.
It took a Chantelle O'Hara goal three minutes
from time to prevent a penalty shootout.
West Brom's scare was even bigger, as they
fell behind at Long Eaton United. Sophie Hull
equalised just past the hour and it was Leanne
Mitchell, 28 minutes into the added half an
hour, who snatched the Baggies a result.
Elsewhere, wins were comfortable for the
Northern Division clubs.
A Faye McCoy strike was sandwiched between
a Saffron Jordon double in Blackburn Rovers'
3-0 win over Barnsley, while Leicester City
came from one down at Chorley to record an
emphatic 5-1 result.
Results—Sunday 3 September:
Blackburn Rovers 3-0 Barnsley
Bradford City 3-3 (3-2 on pens) Fylde
Chorley 1-5 Leicester City
Derby County 7-0 Rotherham United
Long Eaton United 1-2 AET West Brom
Middlesbrough 5-0 Burton Albion
Morecambe 1-3 Stoke City
Newcastle United 0-3 Huddersfield Town
Nottingham Forest 7-1 Leeds United
Solihull Moors 1-2 AET Guiseley Vixens
Wolves 0-2 Liverpool Marshalls Feds
Middlesbrough also hit five, at home to
Burton Albion, while both Nottingham Forest
and Derby County bettered that with seven
goals apiece - the latter without reply against
Rotherham, the former beating Leeds 7-1.
Stoke and Huddersfield then defeated
Morecambe and Newcastle United
respectively to join eight other Northern
Division sides in the next round.
FAWPL Preview: Sunday 10 September
The early season top two face off this
afternoon in the pick of the FA Women’s
Premier League Northern Division fixtures.
Huddersfield sit at the summit, just ahead of
Blackburn on goal difference, and will hope to
stay there as they play hosts to the champions
today.
Both recorded 3-0 wins in the cup last
weekend and have won both their opening
league fixtures, free-scoring as they have done
so.
Town in particular have enjoyed themselves
on the attack, with 10 goals scored, but also at
the back where they’ve not yet conceded.
But Rovers are yet to leak a goal either,
though one will surely give this afternoon.
Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and
Guiseley Vixens will all hope to build on their
cup wins last weekend to record their first
league victories.
Guiseley visit Fylde, who were eliminated
from the cup on penalties by Bradford, fresh
off the back of an extra time victory over
Solihull Moors.
West Brom also went to extra time last week,
defeating Long Eaton United 2-1 over 120
minutes. They welcome Stoke, with at least
one to get their first points today.
Elsewhere, a high-flying Leicester City side
play hosts to last year’s runners-up
Middlesbrough, in what should be another
Huddersfield Town vs Blackburn Rovers
Leicester City vs Middlesbrough
Nottingham Forest vs Derby County
West Bromwich Albion vs Stoke City
The Foxes have a 100 per cent record so far
this season, but welcome a Boro side full of
confidence after back-to-back wins, despite
losing their season opener.
The remaining fixture today is an East
Midlands derby, as Nottingham Forest and
Derby County clash.
Both scored seven in the cup last weekend,
and sit separated by just one place and one
point going into the game.
A local rivalry, confidence going forward in
both teams will only add to the occasion as
each look to continue their strong starts.

It wasn’t a game for the faint of heart, but a
thrilling match in the first round of the FA
Women's Premier League Cup saw Bradford
City scramble through in a well-fought
contest.
With the clouds looming over Eccleshill, it
seemed almost a bad omen as Fylde’s Sophie
Charlton opened the scoring in the 13th
minute, executing some clever passing play to
catch the Bantams out in defence.
Despite dominating most of the half with their
height and pace, Bradford did manage to get
some attacking play through the midfield, but
long balls through towards goal were always
beaten by the pacey centre-backs of Fylde.
It remained that way until the break, with the
Bantams' defence holding strong despite the
earlier goal.
City were quick to apply the pressure from
kick-off in the second half, with prolific goalscorer
Laura Elford coming on for a tiring
Bryony Hanson in the 52nd minute.
Jess Graham had a shot within minutes that
beat the ‘keeper and rattled off the crossbar,
but Fylde were quick to counter, and
substitute Veatriki Sarri tucked the ball away
against the run of play to double their lead.
Managing from the side-lines, Charlotte Stuart
then subbed a well-worked Graham to
introduce Ellie Olds to the fold in the hopes of
bolstering the attack.
And attack they did. With only 10 minutes left
to play, Elford battered her way through the
Fylde defence to smash the ball into the back
of the net, giving the Bantams a chance and
what seemed like a breath of fresh air.
Last time out: Bradford City 3-3 (3-2 on pens) Fylde
The last 10 minutes were all Bradford; White
had a decent shot after fighting to turn in the
box, but the equaliser came six minutes after
the first with the second super-sub Ellie Olds
hooking the ball into the net after it landed at
her feet from a deflection.
There were several more chances for Bradford
in the final minutes, but the full-time whistle
blew with a well-earned 2-2 result leading the
way for extra time.
The Bantams’ bottle was to be tested once
again as Charlton netted her second for Fylde
in the fifth minute of extra time – a hopeful
shot from 25 yards that seemed to float into
the bottom right corner of Saunders’ net.
Come the second half of extra time, the
familiar feeling of time ticking away was back
– but so was the joy of a second comeback,
with Elford once again thrashing an equaliser
home after a fantastic break down the left
wing from Olds.
Moments later, Elford was shown a straight
red for a slide tackle, despite the linesman
ruling it as a fair challenge. Applauded as she
left the field, she’d done an incredible job
keeping the Bantams in the contest as the
final whistle blew to lead the game to
penalties.
Goalkeeper Natalie Saunders was the
standout performer in the shootout; Fylde
didn’t miss a single penalty – with Saunders
herself launching one over the bar and
another two saved by the Fylde ‘keeper – but
after Saunders dived and parried three to
safety, we were once again at deadlock with
two penalties a piece going into suddendeath.
Bravely, Saunders dived at full stretch to tip
the final Fylde kick around the post. Then it
was up to Katy Woodcock to step up and
power the Bantams’ final penalty into the
back of the net, and that she did,
sending Bradford City into round two of the
cup.
Teenager Lucy Preston made her full debut in the victory
last week. (Photo: Paul2Paul Photography)
