Chair Chatter: Sally Thackray ahead of today’s game
Good afternoon to everyone for today’s FA Women's Premier League Northern Division match
against Newcastle United WFC. A warm welcome to all players, club officials and spectators
who have made the journey from Newcastle to be here today.
Last week saw us entertain Blackburn Rovers in the first round of the SSE FA Women’s Cup.
We were unlucky to concede a goal in the final few minutes of the game giving Blackburn the
opportunity to go into the next round, we wish them well.
Today’s opponents will be looking to improve their current league position, but their position
at the foot of the table does not tell the whole story. Their current form is not dissimilar to
other teams in the league in terms of games lost and won, but other teams, including us, have
played more games. So today both sides will be battling hard to secure maximum points.
I am pleased to welcome Lindsay England today, the founder of Just a Ball Game?, who have
kindly agreed to sponsor the match. Just a Ball Game? is a campaign group that aims to help
grassroots and professional sports groups, amongst others, deliver core values of 'Safety-
Inclusion-Respect' around LGBT people, sexual orientation and gender identity. They also aim
to raise awareness and challenge what is seen as homophobia/anti gay etc.
Bradford City’s men’s team are already a partner with Just a Ball Game? and as we also
become a partner, I think this makes us the first club to take this step. There is more
information about Just a Ball Game? in this programme and at www.justaballgame.co.uk.
We are grateful for the support of Just a Ball Game? today. Without this kind of support it
would be impossible to continue providing football for the girls and women of Bradford.
Elsewhere by a quirk of fixtures, our Reserve team are also playing Newcastle Reserves, but
we will be the team doing the travelling!
Good luck to them as they aim to follow up last week’s win over Brighouse Town.
Enjoy the game,
Match Preview: Bradford City vs Newcastle United
Paige Crosby in action against Newcastle last season.
Bradford City welcome Newcastle United this
afternoon in the FA Women’s Premier League.
Current form
These two come into today’s game fresh off
the back of SSE FA Women’s Cup results that
contradict their current form.
Bottom of the table Newcastle beat RACA
Tyne 3-0, while Bradford were denied a third
successive victory as they fell 1-0 at home to
Blackburn Rovers.
Newcastle will hope to build on that win
today, bidding to survive, while City aim to
bounce back.
Team news
City’s recent loan signing Rachel Newborough
is in line to make her league debut today, new
signing Yasmin Ayub could make her second
debut, and Jess Graham is in contention to
start too after returning from injury last week.
6 | FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE | BRADFORD CITY VS NEWCASTLE UNITED
Graham could replace Ellie Olds in the starting
line-up, who this week tore her ankle
ligaments and could be out for two months.
Making 13 starts and scoring two goals this
season, Olds will be a sorry miss as she joins
striker Lucy Sowerby in the treatment room—
who suffered the same injury just last month.
Previous meetings
City have a fantastic recent record against the
Magpies and have never lost at home to them
in the FA Women’s Premier League.
Newcastle did beat City 3-1 on Tyneside last
term, but the Bantams were 2-1 victors in the
cup and won 3-0 on their own patch to get
one up on the Toon Army.
Incidentally, none of the City players who
scored against Newcastle last season will
feature today. Three have since left the club,
while Rosie McDonnell will not be involved.

Jess Graham: “It felt amazing being back on the pitch“
Jess Graham gets stuck in against Blackburn earlier this season.
After two months out injured, Jess Graham
returned to action last weekend as a second
half substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Blackburn
Rovers.
Today, she is in contention to make her full
return, even more so with Ellie Olds’ injury
opening up a space in midfield.
Whether she starts or just features from the
bench again though, Graham is raring to go
after enduring a significant spell on the
sidelines.
“It felt amazing being back on the pitch
Sunday as I thought it would be at least next
year until I'd be able to be back training,” said
City’s number eight.
“It's the first time I've been injured properly in
my football life, so it has made me even more
determined to train harder because I have
missed it so much on and off the pitch.”
Similar levels of determination run through
the squad today, as they aim to bounce back
from last Sunday’s narrow loss.
After such a positive display, defeat was
difficult for the Bantams to take, and
especially given the manner in which it was
dealt to them.
An 87th minute strike—arguably Rovers’ first
real attempt at goal—saw them progress to
the second round of the SSE FA Women’s Cup,
while City crashed out.
But the Bantams have taken countless
positives from the game and go into today’s
clash with Newcastle United full of
confidence.
“Blackburn are title contenders but we were
the better team, and I think a lot of people
would agree with me,” said Graham.
“Compared to the first time we played them
[a 4-0 loss in September], we have improved
massively and that’s a great positive for the
Jess Graham: “It felt amazing being back on the pitch”
club moving forward as we are a fairly new
team.”
This afternoon, City go from playing favourites
for the title to playing favourites to be
relegated.
Newcastle have won just two of their opening
10 games, leaving them four points adrift at
the foot of the table.
West Bromwich Albion are the team they are
chasing down, but last season’s champions
have began to pick up form and distance
themselves from the foot of the table.
Even so, Graham says the Bantams are not
underestimating this afternoon’s opponents.
“Today we have to bring the same attitude
and fight we showed against Blackburn to
secure a win,” she said.
“The table may not reflect the ability of teams
Jess Graham finally made her
return from injury last week,
replacing Abi Lee against Blackburn.
and we have to be ready to take three points
from every game.”
She is right to be cautious too. Newcastle
come into the game full of confidence after
defeating lower-league RACA Tyne 3-0 in the
SSE FA Women’s Cup last Sunday and they will
be hoping to spring a surprise.
Bar a heavy 5-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest
two weeks ago, the Toon Army’s last few
games have been close ones—with victory
over Leicester sandwiched in between a 2-1
loss at West Brom and a 1-0 defeat to
Blackburn.
They are capable of competing with the top
sides, and will be out to prove that once more
today in pursuit of a precious win in their bid
to stay up.
But this is a game City will rightly be confident
in taking three points from—granted they are
on their game.
The spirits are high in the dressing room and
the performances have been very good after a
tricky start.
“To improve on last week, we are looking to
be more direct and more confident going
forward against Newcastle,” Graham said.
City may not have a victory from their last
outing to bring into this game like their
opponents, but their number eight believes
“bouncing off a good performance from last
Sunday will help” in their bid for a more
positive result this afternoon.
“We have a lot of passion at this club.
“We fight for every ball and have started to
communicate well on the pitch.
“We have amazing ability at the club too and
need to start showing it off.”
Today’s Match Sponsor: Just A Ball Game?
Today’s game is sponsored
by Just A Ball Game? – a
campaign group focused
on promoting diversity and
fighting discrimination and
homophobia in sport.
Just a few weeks after
rainbow laces and rainbow
captain’s armbands graced
the men’s Premier League, Bradford City WFC
will today show their support for the LGBT+
community as well.
The players will wear the campaign’s t-shirts
in today’s warm-up as a symbol of that as
everyone at the club looks forward to learning
more about what they do.
“Teaming up with BCWFC gives Just A Ball
Game? a chance to spread the word on our
campaign work, which
seeks to raise awareness
around LGBT+ inclusion
and visibility, and also
challenge what is seen as
homophobia or anti-gay,”
said Lindsay England,
founder of the campaign.
“We have already seen
the men’s team support our campaign for
several seasons now and we are very much
looking forward to partnering with the
women’s squad to showcase how seriously
football in Bradford is around equality and
diversity.”
The rainbow pride flag flies high at Valley
Parade, and a short walk from the stadium
will take you to another of Just A Ball Game?’s
partners – Bradford Brewery.
Support from the campaign is growing around
the country too, with more and more banners
in support of the LGBT+ community starting to
appear around the Football League.
Bradford City WFC are proud to get behind
Just A Ball Game? and join them in their fight
to kick all forms of discrimination out of the
beautiful game.
“Just A Ball Game? would like to thank
everyone at BCWFC for the partnership, which
shows support for the important work we are
doing and the real difference we are making
in challenging discrimination within the
game,” England said.
“We have a huge interest in the women’s
game and are very grateful for the respect
and acceptance it brings to young people.”
Great news for Bradford City this week came in
the form of a new signing, though it’s not a new
face.
After eight years away from the club, Yasmin
Ayub returns to the Bantams’ set-up.
A versatile asset who can play in the centre of
midfield or lead the front line, ‘Yaz’ came
through City’s junior set up but would leave the
club at the age of 19.
She joined Kirklees Ladies in 2009, who merged
with Brighouse Town in 2013. A stalwart in the
team, Ayub went on to become Town’s club
captain but could
not resist the
opportunity to
return to her
former club ahead
of the second half
of the season.
The 27-year-old is
in contention to
start this
afternoon, with
Ellie Olds missing
in midfield
through injury.
SSE FA Women’s Cup Round-up: Sunday 4 December
Seven of the FAWPL Northern Division’s 11
sides remain in the SSE FA Women’s Cup after
last Sunday’s first round ties.
There were exits for Bradford City, Fylde and
Huddersfield Town in three all-third tier
clashes, as league rivals progressed at their
expense.
City fell narrowly to Blackburn Rovers, whose
first meaningful effort at goal produced an
87th minute winner after the Bantams had hit
the woodwork three times.
In Huddersfield, one goal was also enough for
the visitors as Derby County’s Natalie Reay
sent her side through to the second round.
Meanwhile, Fylde fell to West Bromwich
Albion in a more one-sided 4-1 result.
The Baggies were 2-0 up inside eight minutes
thanks to goals from Leigh Dugmore and
Abigail Cottam, before Trina Greaves added a
third in the second half.
Danielle Young pulled one back for Fylde, but
she would then see red and Cottam wrapped
things up against the 10-men for West Brom.
Elsewhere, Stoke City were on the wrong end
of an upset as they were eliminated by lowerleague
Liverpool Marshall Feds on penalties.
The Merseysiders came from 1-0 down in
normal time and built upon substitute Carla
Lee’s equaliser to win the tie dramatically.
The script was followed in most other ties.
Northern Division One leaders Guiseley Vixens
looked capable of causing an upset at home to
struggling Nottingham Forest, but Charlotte
Broad secured the visitors a 1-0 win.
Leicester City and Newcastle United both
defeated lower-league opposition 3-0 on the
road, overcoming Birmingham & West
Midlands and RACA Tyne respectively, while
Middlesbrough downed sixth division
Hartlepool United 1-0.
The day’s biggest upset came down South,
where Cambridge United overcame QPR 3-1.
Long Eaton United and Plymouth Argyle were
awarded walkovers, while the only place left
up for grabs is between Southampton and
Swindon Town, after their game was
postponed.
FAWPL Preview: Sunday 11 December
Cup and Plate ties this afternoon mean there
are just three league fixtures to be played.
Huddersfield Town and Leicester City are both
bidding for a place in the semi-finals of the
Plate, visiting lower-league opposition.
Town travel Tranmere Rovers, who beat
Mossley Hill 2-1 in the last round, while
Leicester will battle a Keynsham Town side
who upset third division West Ham United in
the last 16.
In the cup, West Bromwich Albion make the
trip to London to face Southern division side
Charlton Athletic, who surprisingly defeated
Portsmouth 4-2 in the previous round.
Meanwhile Blackburn Rovers are aiming to
maintain their unbeaten start to the season at
lower-league Chester le Street Town, who
upset Derby County to reach the last eight.
But back to league matters—there are six
sides in action today, all aiming to take
advantage of the fact that those around them
in the standings aren’t.
Here at Eccleshill United, Bradford City know
that a win can lift them as high as third, with
Leicester playing in the Plate.
Fylde and Derby County will hoping the
Bantams slip up though, as if there is a winner
in their clash and Newcastle also register
three points, the victor will climb into fourth.
The two are level on points after a deduction
for Fylde, who fielded an ineligible player
when facing Newcastle in September.
Fixtures—Sunday 11 December:
Bradford City vs Newcastle United
Fylde vs Derby County
16 | FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE | BRADFORD CITY VS NEWCASTLE UNITED
Nottingham Forest vs Middlesbrough
Both were early season title contenders, but
have since seen their form tail off.
They will be hoping to show just what they are
capable of today though in an intriguing clash.
Elsewhere, leaders Middlesbrough are looking
to open up a three point gap between them
and Blackburn today.
With Rovers not in league action, even a draw
for Boro at struggling Nottingham Forest will
separate the top two on something other than
goal difference.
Forest have picked up form recently though,
hammering Newcastle 5-1 in their last home
game. They will be confident in extending
their unbeaten run to five games this
afternoon.

Bradford City are out of the SSE FA Women's
Cup after Faye McCoy's 87th minute effort
secured Blackburn Rovers' passage to the
second round.
City boss Charlotte Stuart described their two
previous meetings this season as having been
settled by 'fine margins,' and that rang true
again last Sunday.
The Bantams hit the woodwork in both halves
and prevented a talented Blackburn side from
playing the football that has them favourites
to win the league this year.
But Rovers grafted and stole the win in the
dying moments, McCoy coming off the bench
to fire the winner in hard and low past
Charlotte Oates.
It was a tight and well-contested affair, with
few real chances throughout as City frustrated
Rovers but found it difficult to break through
their organised back line.
Rovers' Ainsley Strickland fired over on the
turn early on, while Ellie Olds headed a couple
of Zoe Roberts' set pieces wide of the mark to
set the tone.
In such a scrappy encounter, balls into the box
looked the most likely source of an opening
goal as Hannah Campbell too directed one just
off target before the half hour mark.
Blackburn had their own openings in the first
period as well, with Saffron Jordan seeing a
goal disallowed for offside before Ellie Cook's
header from a corner went wide.
But it was City who had the biggest chance of
the half and it was they who came closest to
breaking the deadlock.
Laura Elford played a perfectly-weighted pass
through for Campbell, and her arrowed effort

Last time out: Bradford City 0-1 Blackburn Rovers
on goal struck the foot of the post just before
half time.
It was a game suitable for the old cliché; a
game that was going to either be won by
some flukey goal or defensive error, or by a
superb strike.
The former appeared to be the more likely
when Oates was forced to tip a goal bound
corner over the bar, and then even more so
when Roberts' looping cross hit the woodwork
at the other end.
But more quality crept into the game as time
ticked by. Legs tired, more space and time was
allowed on the ball, and chances were
created.
Campbell forced a very good low save out of
her opposing 'keeper, Danielle Hill, before
Rovers defender Kelsey Pearson was first to
pounce on the loose ball to clear the danger.
Blackburn were inches away from a winner
too when Emma Shepherd rose highest at a
corner and headed only a fraction wide.
Though the game seemed destined for extra
time, it wasn't to be.
It may have been crueller to lose in extra time
or on penalties, but for City to crash out
thanks to McCoy's 87th minute strike was still
tough to take.
The substitute powerfully drove the ball into
the bottom corner from distance, sparking
wild celebrations by those in blue and white
as they stole the victory.
It was a difficult result for City to accept, but
they can take heart from having matched
arguably the league's best team so admirably,
with positives aplenty to take into today’s
clash with Newcastle.
