Chair Chatter: Sally Thackray ahead of today’s game
Good afternoon to everyone for today’s FA Women's Premier League Cup first round fixture
against Fylde Ladies. A warm welcome to all players, club officials and spectators who have
made the journey across the Pennines for this afternoon’s match.
Fylde have played just one fixture and are currently unbeaten, but this is the cup where
anything can happen. This is a difficult time for Fylde as it is about a year ago that they
tragically lost their player, Zoe Tynan. We will be having a minute’s silence before the game
begins as a mark of respect for Zoe. At Bradford we were all affected by this sad news last year
and we invite you to respect the minute’s silence with us all. Our thoughts are with Fylde and
Zoe's family and friends at this difficult time.
In terms of our own start to the season, last week’s 0-0 draw against Nottingham Forest
turned out to be a very feisty affair, with Paige Crosby being stretchered off and needing
emergency dental treatment, as well as Charlotte Stuart requiring 20 stitches on a nasty head
wound.
There was some tremendous commitment on show from our players, and I am certain that
last season we would have lost this game, given the circumstances that prevailed.
Well done girls, keep it going today.
Our Reserve team also kick off their season today with an away game at Blackburn Rovers. It
will be interesting to see how that unfolds.
Off the field there are still opportunities available to sponsor individual players or teams,
please get in touch if you are interested and can help at all.
(sally@bcwfc.co.uk)
Cheer the girls on today.
Enjoy the game,
Bradford City welcome Fylde today in the first
round of the FA Women’s Premier League
Cup.
Team news
The Bantams will be without two key players
today – defender Paige Crosby and playermanager
Charlotte Stuart.
Crosby had to be stretchered off in the draw
with Nottingham Forest last week after
suffering a nasty looking knee injury.
Stuart too was substituted in that game after
a facial injury which required 20 stitches.
Current form
Bradford come into the game looking for their
first win of the season, following defeat at
Leicester and a draw against Forest.
Fylde, meanwhile, convincingly beat last
year’s runners-up Middlesbrough 3-0 on the
opening weekend, before their clash with
Derby County was postponed last Sunday.
Previous meetings
These two have faced each other twice since
the launch of Fylde’s ladies’ side, with today’s
visitors winning both encounters.
Hannah Smith is also a doubt this afternoon
with a groin problem.
However, these blows are cushioned as the
hosts welcome back both Ellie Olds and Lucy
Preston.
They were 3-2 victors on home soil at the
finished one place and four points above the
Jordane Allison: “I’ve been made to feel very welcome“
Summer signing Jordane “JJ” Allison
believes the team’s confidence will
soar once that first goal goes in, with
Bradford City still awaiting their first
win of the season.
After losing 2-0 at Leicester on the
opening weekend, City were held to a
goalless draw by Nottingham Forest
last Sunday.
While the team were more creative
than in their previous outing, they still
failed to find the back of the net and
that first win of the season.
But Allison has seen plenty of positives
in her first two competitive outings for
the club.
“Last week we created more chances
than in the Leicester defeat and I
thought we were unlucky not score,”
she said.
“The defence were solid as well
despite two major injuries – hopefully
Paige [Crosby] and Charlotte [Stuart]
will be okay and return as soon as
possible.
“I think we just need to keep
experimenting in the final third and
also keep our composure,” Allison
added.
8 | FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE | BRADFORD CITY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Jordane Allison: “I’ve been made to feel very welcome”
“The chances and shots are coming.
“We’re utilising that overload in
midfield to create these opportunities.
“And after we find that first goal, I
think we’ll start banging them in.”
Allison arrived from Brighouse Town
this summer and has slotted into the
team’s new set-up, which includes a
switch to three at the back.
Player-manager Stuart admitted
during the summer that the decision
to change the team’s formation was
because it was better suited to the
players.
Allison, playing as a wing-back,
believes that rings true for her role,
and has given credit to the team for
helping her settle into the position.
“It’s a professional set up here at
Bradford and the coaching staff are
class,” she said.
“The formation we’re playing gives
me license to attack but it also gives
us more security at the back.
“It’s hard coming to a new club,
especially when all the players know
each other and have played together
before.
“But they’ve all made me feel very
welcome.
“It’s a good vibe.”
Reserves: Season starts today for City’s second team
Bradford City’s reserves shake hands with Sheffield United before their 3-1 win.
Bradford City’s reserves kick off their new
season this afternoon, taking on last year’s FA
Women’s Premier League Reserve Northern
Division champions, Blackburn Rovers.
The team has a complete new look to it this
year, with coaches Toni Butcher, 20, and Meg
Lawson, 21, taking on a team that has
inherited most of last year’s under-18 squad.
Eleven of those signed on for the team are
teenagers, while none of the squad are aged
over 23 going into today’s clash.
But their opposition too will be a young side,
with Rovers known for fielding a youthful
reserve team with huge success—winning the
league last year and coming runners-up in the
cup.
The Bantams go into the game on a run of
three straight wins, having closed out their
pre-season schedule in style.
After losing their opening friendly at Durham,
City fought out 4-4 draws with both Castleford
White Rose and Barnsley, coming from behind
to do so in each game.
They then secured their first win at Sheffield
United, before beating Leeds United and
Brighouse Athletic ahead of today’s trip to
Lancashire.
“I’m very excited to see what this season
holds,” Butcher said this week.
“The balance we have with experience and
youth is really starting to gel and the players
are all working well together.”
Lawson added: “It’s all come together at the
right time and we are confident of a positive
start to the season.”
Fylde LFC were originally formed
under the name Duke of York in 1971
and were founder members of the
then North West Women's Football
They were renamed in 1977 as
Preston Rangers W.F.C. and, in both
the 1982-83 and 1989-90 seasons,
reached the semi finals of the FA
In 1997 they became Preston North
champions, winning promotion to the
Northern Combination Women's
Football League.
In 1999 the club was officially
affiliated with Preston North End F.C.
The club won the Northern
Combination Women's Football
promoted into the FA Women's
Premier League Northern Division for
the first time.
The club was rebranded Fylde Ladies
association from Preston North End to
FAWPL Round-up: Sunday 27 August
Huddersfield Town top the Northern Division
table after two games, with 10 goals scored
and six points gained.
They kept another clean sheet at the
weekend with a 6-0 hammering of
Guiseley, goals from Kate Mallin and
Emily Heckler (2) putting them 3-0 up
by the break.
Former Bantams Hannah Campbell and
Danielle Whitham then added three
more in the second half, the former
netting her second after a red card for
Guiseley’s Charlotte Higginson.
Goals from Alexandra Taylor and Saffron
Jordon gave champions Blackburn Rovers a 2-
0 win over West Bromwich Albion, meaning
they sit second in the standings.
Leicester are the only other side with a 100
per cent record after two games, sitting third
after a 3-1 victory at Stoke City.
An own goal gave Stoke a third minute lead,
but they again threw it away as Rosie Axten
scored two in three second half minutes
before Sophie Domingo added a late
insurance goal.
A point for Nottingham Forest in a goalless
draw with Bradford City puts them fourth,
following their narrow 1-0 win over Guiseley,
while Middlesbrough got their first win of the
season in the most entertaining game of the
Wolves took the lead after only one minute
through Jade Cross.
But Boro were level less than 60 seconds later
thanks to Anna Birtwhistle.
The two teams then exchanged blows,
meaning the score read 3-3 going into the
final moments.
But there was still time for a winner, scored by
Emma Foster in dramatic fashion as she
finished in the 88th minute.
Fylde and Derby County were the only two
teams not in action, with their clash
postponed.
FAWPL Preview: Sunday 3 September
The magic of the cup is back this weekend in
the FA Women’s Premier League.
Bradford City and Fylde are the only
Northern Division sides not facing lower
league opposition, as they take on each
other today at Eccleshill United.
Blackburn Rovers progressed the furthest
from the division last year, reaching the
semi-finals of the cup only to lose to runners
-up Charlton Athletic.
They take on Barnsley, bottom of Northern
Division One, hoping to start a similarly
fruitful run this year.
Most of the division go into their ties as
favourites.
Top of the table Huddersfield Town take on
recently-relegated Newcastle United, while
Leicester and Derby County will hope to
maintain their 100 per cent records against
Chorley and Rotherham United respectively.
Solihull Moors, welcoming Guiseley, and
Liverpool Marshalls Feds, visiting Wolves, will
hope to cause upsets against the newlypromoted
sides, both of whom are yet to get
points on the board in the third tier.
Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion have
also suffered two defeats from two so far.
They will hope to get their first wins in
favourable games – the Potters travelling to
Morecambe while the Baggies are hosted by
Long Eaton United.
Fixtures—Sunday 3 September:
FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE | BRADFORD CITY

Last time out: Bradford City 0-0 Nottingham Forest
The two teams shake hands before kick off. (Photo: Paul Rogers)
Bradford City endured a tough scrap
to keep a physical Nottingham Forest
at bay, but the opposition held the
Bantams off just as well in a gritty
game at sunny Eccleshill.
Within the first minute, Paige Crosby
took a knock to the face from a Forest
midfielder that seemed to set the tone
for the rest of the game.
frustrating rally of Bantams shots in
the 14th minute not doing enough to
beat the Forest defence or the
‘keeper.
Some of the biggest head-scratching
of the game came from the fans, as
several poor challenges came in
without a single booking from the
referee.
Dangerous, mistimed challenges had
play pausing more often than not for
knocked players, and it was difficult
for either team to get into any real
flow of play for the first 10 minutes.
The game picked up after that, with a
With the tackles still flying in, it was
inevitable there were going to be
some injuries.
And the first major incident came to
Paige Crosby, who was knocked on the
ball and landed awkwardly, forcing the
20 | FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE | BRADFORD CITY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Last time out: Bradford City 0-0 Nottingham Forest
physios on and stopping play for
almost eight minutes. Crosby
eventually had to be stretchered off,
and was replaced by Zoe Roberts.
It took until the eighth minute of
added time for the referee to finally
produce a card, and it came as a
yellow for the Nottingham number
four, Summer Holmes, for a harsh
challenge on a City defender.
Forest’s number eight, Trina Greaves
proved one of the more physical
players in their midfield arsenal,
getting stuck in with powerful tackles
and feeding balls through the middle.
However, the second half showed the
Bantams pressing much more on the
attack, forcing some desperate
clearances from the Forest defence.
At the hour mark, City worked hard to
get into some promising positions.
Shots from Charlotte Stuart, Roberts,
Laura Elford, and Yasmin Ayub were
on target, but were blocked defiantly
by a sturdy Forest defence.
Nottingham heaped their own
pressure on too midway through the
second half with each attempt
eventually coming to nothing, and
leaving the Bantams space to finally
break away on the counter.
Another rough challenge forced
Charlotte Stuart to the floor with a
nasty head injury, and after emerging
onto her feet again with her head
bandaged, she was substituted for
Jess Graham.
Some heavy Bradford pressure in the
last 10 minutes almost resulted in the
breakthrough, with Elford blasting two
powerful shots towards goal, but both
went just wide of the target to leave
the Forest ‘keeper untroubled.
Nottingham thought they’d clinched
the winner in the 90th minute as the
ball was rifled into the side-netting
after deflecting off a City defender,
but it was out for a corner. The
resulting ball in was cleared, and the
full time whistle finally blew.
The result leaves City with their first
point of the season, and means
Nottingham Forest are still to beat
Bantams on home turf after losing the
three previous encounters.
On the run of play, the scoreline was a
fair result, but the Bantams will be
keen to work on putting away the
chances they worked hard to create in
this game.
