Pests and diseases
The biodynamic philosophy on pest and
disease outbreaks is the same as for weeding:
there must be an imbalance to cause the
issue in the first place. Insects can tell when
a plant is under stress, so they often act as
the messengers bringing the plant’s ill-health to
your attention.
Spraying the attacking insect will not
remedy the initial cause of the plant’s decline
and consequent insect infestation. Look for
the possible causes that have weakened your
crop or plant. These include poor soil condition,
inadequate amount and frequency of watering,
lack of good nutrition, different soil preferences,
preferred climate zone of plant species,
seasonal temperatures and weather extremes.
Planting for biodiversity is another
strongly held remedy. Grow a variety of
flowering plants to attack beneficial insects.
Surrounding native vegetation can also play
an important role in creating habitat for
predating insects as well as bird life.
