to the issue
On a recent trip to Tasmania, I was
reminded once again of the deep
respect I have for the men and
women who grow our food — our
farmers. Having a brother who presents The
Country Hour on Hobart ABC radio meant
specially arranged tours of a cherry and apple
orchard, a vineyard, and a spectacular mixed
farm that produces everything from poppies for
medication and plants for essential oils to sheep
and beautiful Black Angus cattle.
It’s truly awe-inspiring to see not just the
sheer hard work our farmers put in, but also
their extraordinary courage in taking risks that
city folk can barely even imagine. Not just the
massive financial outlays on equipment in order
to keep abreast, and being at the mercy of the
increasingly fickle elements, which of course
goes hand in hand with farming, but also their
willingness to try something new and different
to see if they can make a go of it.
The only off note was realising just how
much of our finest produce leaves these shores
for China, Japan and other countries because
farmers need to make a decent return for all
that work and investment — and they’re not
going to get it from the big supermarkets, which
just squeeze them harder and harder.
Growing our own food in our own backyards
seems such a small thing by comparison, but it’s
important nonetheless. In fact, visiting these
farms just made me feel I should try harder
to produce more and to source what I don’t
grow from farmers’ markets and roadside
stalls. (Luckily, I live in a rural area and can
buy things such as honey, wine and olive oil
from neighbours.)
Clearly, if you’ve bought this magazine
you have similar ideas and are looking for
information and inspiration to turn your
backyard or acreage into an edible oasis.
Or perhaps, like our amazing Gardening Folk,
you have already.
So, this issue, the crops we feature include
flower sprouts, a recently developed cross
between Brussels sprouts and kale, along
with Tazziberry, which despite its name is not

milder temperament.
We also focus on keeping soil healthy and
alive, and take a closer look at mulching and
how we should be doing it — it’s not quite
as straightforward as you think — along with
making manure tea to use both directly on the
soil and as a foliar fertiliser. Plus, we present part
two of basic biodynamics along with a moon
planting guide for May and June, as well as
growing produce in pots.
Finally, replacing our usual Garden to Table
pages is a special section on fermented foods
and pickling, including the incredible health
benefits and how to make some items using
either the excess from your garden or bought
produce grown by hard-working farmers
