After winning his 26.2-mile debut at the 2014 USATF Marathon Championships, Pennel<br />
spent his 2015 season lowering his personal bests at shorter distances. That May, he clocked<br />
28:22.90 for 10,000 meters at Stanford University, followed by a new mile best of 3:58.99<br />
and 5000-meter best of 13:32.06 over a span of two weeks in June. That fall, he returned to<br />
the roads, recording runner-up at the national 10-mile and 12-kilometer championships. He<br />
ran his next marathon at the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon in February; in Los Angeles, he<br />
would finish fifth after making an aggressive attempt to break from the lead pack on mile 16.<br />
Pennel attended Western State College of Colorado (now Western State Colorado University),<br />
where he earned 11 NCAA All-American honors and won the 10,000 meters at the 2012<br />
NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships. Originally from Golden, CO, he now trains in<br />
Blowing Rock, NC with the ZAP Fitness post-collegiate training group.<br />
