Soejima won the 2011 New York City Marathon, becoming the first Japanese winner of the<br />
race in any division.<br />
He set the Japanese record for the wheelchair marathon at 1:21:23 with his second-place<br />
finish in the 2008 Padua Marathon. In 2007, he became the first Japanese winner in<br />
Boston, breaking Ernst Van Dyk’s streak of six consecutive wins with a seven-minute<br />
margin of victory. A three-time Paralympian, Soejima has made the podium three times<br />
at the IPC Athletics World Championships, but never the Paralympic Games.<br />
In 2015, Soejima was appointed the wheelchair race director of the Tokyo Marathon in<br />
Japan. He has also run Soejimart, an online shop selling athletics clothing and merchandise.<br />
Soejima suffered damage to his spinal cord at age 23 after being struck by a falling steel<br />
plate while working at his family’s ironworks business. He has also competed in paratriathlon<br />
at the international level.<br />
