On November 5 of last year, Gracey recorded her first sub-1:10 performance in the half-marathon,
taking second place at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia Half-Marathon. While her time
of 1:09:59 qualified her for the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon, she opted to make her 26.2-
mile debut at the Boston Marathon in April. In Boston, she placed ninth in 2:35:00 and was
the top American finisher. She returned to Massachusetts in August for the Falmouth Road
Race, placing sixth and finishing the seven-miler in 37:50. While training for the TCS New
York City Marathon, she won the NYRR Staten Island Half on October 9 in 1:13:03.
Originally from Shippensburg, PA, Gracey was an eight-time NCAA Division II champion at
Shippensburg University. While competing for the Raiders, she was coached by her father,
Steve Spence, the 1991 IAAF World Championships Marathon bronze medalist and a 1992
U.S. Olympian in the marathon. When she made her own marathon debut in Boston, she
built upon her lifelong connection to the race: On the day she was born, her father ran
2:16:40 for 19th place in the race, in what was a personal best at the time.
