She took her first title in 2:25:07, defeating Jemima Sumgong in a sprint through Central Park. The win followed third-place finishes in 2010 and 2011; in 2011, she ran the first half of the course in a blazing 1:07:56. She won more decisively in 2015, building a lead of 1:07 over the final 10 kilometers. Keitany is the former world record-holder for the half-marathon (1:05:50 at the 2011 Ras Al Khaimah Half-Marathon), and the current world record-holder for 25K (1:19:53 at the 2010 Berlin BIG 25). She won two consecutive London Marathons (2011, 2012), the latter in a blistering 2:18:37—a time that makes her the second-fastest woman in history behind Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain. She returned the next year and placed third. Kipyego has earned silver medals over 10,000 meters at two global championships: first at the 2011 IAAF World Championships, and then the following summer at the London 2012 Olympics. Seven days after medaling in London, she added a fourth-place finish in the 5000 meters. Last summer, she finished fifth in the 10,000 meters at the IAAF World Championships, running 31:44.42. This year, she recorded a season-best 14:43.98 for 5000 meters at the Prefontaine Classic in May. Currently training with the Oregon Track Club Elite, Kipyego graduated from Texas Tech University in 2009 with a degree in nursing. As a Red Raider, she won nine NCAA championships, including three consecutive titles in cross country.
