MINDFULNESS IN BUSINESS ............................................ Jo Berry Befriending the bomber Two days after her father was killed by the Brighton bomb, Jo Berry went to church. During the service, listening to a peace activist’s speech, she made a decision, suddenly and quite firmly. It was “like putting an anchor in the ground, or something.” Before the bomb, she’d been very interested in pacifism and meditation and peace work. But her father’s death had raised a question in her mind. “Was I going to give up everything I believed in? That would mean having an enemy, and maybe closing down on life, closing down on myself? Or was I going to stay open, and try and find a way to transform it and feel it and bring something positive, and carry on believing in nonviolence?” She chose the latter path, without having any idea how she’d actually go about doing that. The process kicked off by that decision eventually led her to meet, listen to, and actually befriend the bomber, Patrick Magee. She and ‘Pat’ now work together on conflict resolution, as part of the charity Building Bridges for Peace. The key to Berry’s thinking, I gather, is that dehumanising the enemy “is the basis of all unhealthy conflict. Conflict can be healthy, but in all unhealthy conflict there’s some aspect of dehumanising happening.” This month, Berry will be speaking at Meaning, a conference about progressive business practices. Can businesses really benefit, I asked, from lessons learned in serious armed conflict? “I think so. There’s a whole spectrum of blaming and demonising the other. It can be as simple as someone at work who says something that you take the wrong way. Even in small conflicts, when we blame and demonise someone, then I feel we’re contributing to a culture of blame. Blame, for me, is a form of violence. So how do we change that? How do we begin to empathise with people and hear their stories? And if they do something that annoys us, how can we challenge their behaviour without actually blaming them? “The whole blame culture in the workplace can mean that people are quite scared to open up; perhaps their self-esteem is affected, so they can’t do their best; perhaps they stop caring. All sorts of things can contribute to people being less productive. A workplace which is more empathic and respectful means that people will want to work. “So as in schools now, where they have circle-time sharing, I think every healthy business will also have a safe place for people to share what’s happening with them, so they can feel heard. Because once we’re heard, it’s much easier to let it go. “You know, our politicians don’t give us leadership in that way of communicating; it’s all about, ‘I’m right you’re wrong, and I’m going to tell you why’. This is more about the kind of dialogue where we learn to listen. Listening is a skill that’s very underrated. Real listening’s hard to do.” Steve Ramsey Meaning, 17th, Brighton Dome.
