Peer Mentoring
There has been much research into the issue of bullying in schools over recent
decades which has shown that the consequences can be severe, including
low self-esteem, absenteeism from school, poor academic attainment and
relationship difficulties. Good peer relationships and friendships have been
found to be important in buffering the negative effects of bullying. Where
friends are lacking, specially trained peer supporters can provide a valuable
service to younger students. Peer Mentoring training involves working with
groups of older students within a school to provide training in key skills
including active listening, summarising, the use of open questions and problem
solving. Kent Educational Psychology Service can provide Peer Mentoring
training for students, as well as the option for on-going support in providing
supervision for mentors.
