14 THE BUGLE FRIDAY 28 OCTOBER 2016 Department of Sports, Arts & Culture support Cancer THE Department of Sports, Arts & Culture’s employees showed their support this month to those affected and living with cancer. The aim was to beat the myths around it and show that it affects every race, age and did not have a social status preference. The Department’s Forums; Health & Wellness, Special Programmes Unit, Women’s and Men’s Forums teamed up in showing their support and brought the event to the staff. Support was shown by dressing in Pink, as the day’s theme was “I wear PINK in Support of Cancer Awareness”. The Cancer Association of South Africa sent Ms Nomvuyo Gqibitole and Sister Lyn England to give a detailed presentation on breast cancer and give screenings of it. Ms Gqibitole stated that one’s environment apart from other things can induce it, and encouraged full-body screenings upon doctor visitation. She encouraged the consumption of vegetables; greens (for Iron), oranges (Vitamin A) and reds (antioxidants). CANSA provided the officials with wraps, which is shown in the picture. These are worn in support of those who have lost their hair due to cancer. They also donated pink & blue pins. It is important for women to do this 10 days after they have had their monthly periods, because in some instances lumps and breast tenderness are present during their period. Everyone else; i.e. those who no longer have their monthlies and men, should do this at least once a month. Upon examination, it is vital to check the armpits and chest area too, as cancer attacks cells and can appear within that region too and still be classified as breast cancer. FRIDAY 28 OCTOBER 2016 THE BUGLE 15 St Thomas learners inspired by Wagner at awards function DR ROLENE WAGNER, CEO of Frere hospital and recipient of the regional woman of the year award, was the guest speaker at St Thomas Private school’s annual awards ceremony. Dr Wagner regaled the audience with humorous anecdotes of her upbringing in Cape Town and, thereby, stressed the importance of parental care and nurturance. Hard work and self-discipline, said Dr Wagner, to the learners “are essential ingredients in your overall growth and development”. 'This will prepare them for you for any challenges and demands in future,' she said. D Ubuntu by helping and supporting the less fortunate members in our community. She graphically illustrated this philosophy giving learners (Grade 6-12) a candle to hold. The learners were then asked to light each other’s candle. This Dr Wagner opined, suggested the help and support we should give to others. In this way we will be kindling the flame of hope and passion. Dr Wagner was given a royal welcome by the school by the school colourfully-clad band and drum majorettes.
