KHS learners told to 'never
give up' at prize giving

KHS welcomed back former
Kingite Gavin le Roux to be
their guest speaker at the
annual award ceremony. As
usual the occasion was dignified
yet joyful and served to
showcase the positive aspects
of the school.
The performances of the two
groups, Vocal Avenue and the
Choir were of the usual
excellent standard. Congratulations
are owed to the Ms
Kotsana, the Mrs Jones and
Beamish who put in hours of
rehearsal with the talented
groups of girls.
Mr Gordon Pope, Chair of the
Governing Body, gave a brief
summary of the activities of
his committee. He thanked all
the members of this body and
expressed his satisfaction
with the efficient way it had
conducted the affairs of the
school.
He handed the podium to the
Principal, Mr J Loubser.
Mr Loubser highlighted the
many achievements gained
by the learners, starting with
2015 matriculants who scored
the 24th year in succession
of 100% pass rate.
Delayne Blignault and Charmone
Theron were congratulated
for achieving half
colours in athletics for their
performances at provincial
level.
Charmone featured again for
being selected for the under
16A SA hockey team and
Robin September did likewise
for the Under 16B SA squad.
Ammaarah Desai was awarded
Gold in the de Beers
English Olympiad, an outstanding
achievement. KHS
continues to produce sportswomen
and academics of
outstanding quality.
Mr le Roux delivered a succinct
yet inspirational speech
not only to the prize winners
but to all the girls of KHS. He
encouraged the girls by
telling them to “never give
up”, that all dreams are
attainable if opportunities are
seized, studies diligently
done and negativity avoided.
To support his advice Mr le
Roux quoted the example of
Siyabulela Xuza, a young
Mthatha man who has
achieved international fame
as an engineer; a real rocket
scientist, who successfully
applied the advice given
above.
Mr le Roux went on to
express sympathy for the
#Fees Must Fall campaign,
but stressed that the destruction
and violence involved is
counter-productive and selfdefeating.
He implored the
girls, as representatives of
the coming generation, to
positively criticize and alter
our universities but always to
replace them with something
better. He told the girls to, “.....
build a legacy for future
generations”.
Ending on a positive note Mr
le Roux said that Africa has
vast potential, particularly in
the agricultural sphere and
that innovative, pragmatic
and educated leaders from
today’s youth will be vital to
carry the continent forward
into the future. To this end he
wished all the matriculants
the best of luck with their
examinations.
Mr le Roux’s elegant and
charming wife, Annette,
graciously agreed to hand
out the prizes. The glittering
evening ended on a high
note with enthusiastic
applause for all the
achievers from this high
achieving school.
