Chapter 7: Working with Water
Compulsory National Standards and Measures to Conserve Water
(June 2001)
Regulation 2 states that the minimum standard for basic sanitation services is:
• The provision of appropriate health and hygiene education; and
• A toilet which is safe, reliable, environmentally sound, easy to keep clean,
provides privacy and protection against the weather, is well ventilated, keeps
smells to a minimum and prevents the entry of flies and other disease-carrying
pests.
Regulation 3 states that the minimum standard for basic water supply services is:
• The provision of appropriate education in respect of effective water use; and
• A minimum quantity of potable water of 25 litres per person per day or 6
kilolitres per household per month:
° ° At a minimum flow rate of not less than 10 litres per minutes;
° ° Within 200 metres of a household; and
° ° With effectiveness such that no consumer is without a supply for more
than seven full days in any year.
Water, water everywhere…
Everything we
use, eat or throw
away has a water
footprint.
Water flows through every part of our economy and is essential for all our work and
livelihoods. Because it is necessary everywhere, it is often invisible. And yet without
it, the daily operations of our lives, businesses, farms, towns and schools would
quickly grind to a halt.
Everything we use, eat or throw away has a water footprint. We don’t see this water,
but it has been consumed in making everything we use and in the operating of our
lives.
