DENVER
WATER RATE
INCREASE
Some residents have had questions
about their water bill so we checked
with Denver Water for answers. As
you know, residents and businesses of
Greenwood Village receive their water
from a number of water districts, and
all are subject to Denver Water’s
watering guidelines and rates.
The new rate structure the Denver
Water Board recently adopted is
complex, and in general, water rates
increased in 2016. However, not
everyone’s bill increased. Denver Water
says the rates are designed to help
recover their increasing costs to collect,
treat, and deliver safe, reliable water,
while remaining affordable and
encouraging responsible water use
among customers. Their philosophy of
the more you use, the more you pay
still will hold true as their new threetiered
rate structure gives customers a
more accurate signal of how their
water use affects their bills, allowing
them to make changes to conserve
water.
For about half of Denver residential
customers, the annual increase in 2016
was less than $39, including some who
saw a decrease. In the suburbs
(including Greenwood Village), about
half of the residential customers
experienced a total increase this year of
$100 or less, including some
customers with annual decreases.
To figure out why your bill is higher
this year, look at the gallons used
before comparing the dollar amounts.
This information is
displayed on a graph on
your bill that charts your
water use over the
previous year. Because it
has been so hot and dry
late into the irrigation
season, many people are
keeping their irrigation
systems going longer into
the year and using more
water. If you are seeing
higher bills and water
usage this could be the
reason.
Because each water bill is
individualized, Denver
Water encourages
customers who have questions to call
303-893-2444. They can review your
information to provide a better
understanding of how you used
water this year compared to last year.
If you were out of town and the bill
shows a lot of water used while you
were away it’s possible that you have a
leak that is undetected. In addition,
you can visit Denverwater.org and
read their story, “Why Your Water Bill
is Going Up,” to help address any
questions you may have about your
water rates. GV
