Location: Library Meeting Room (1st Floor) TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15th SONGS AND STORIES FROM THE WAR YEARS Seventy-five years ago this country entered World War II, and people of all ages love the music from the era, 1941- 1945. On Tuesday, November 15, 2016, the Hampton Falls Free Library will host Songs and Stories from the War Years presented by Richard Kruppa. This entertaining and informative program, which begins at 6:30 p.m. focuses on some of the most beloved songs from that era such as “Bluebirds over the White Cliffs of Dover,” “Sentimental Journey,” and “Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition.” Richard not only sings the songs, accompanying himself on guitar, 5-string banjo, and baritone ukulele, but he also tells their fascinating and unfamiliar stories, their meanings, their history, and their significance. Richard asks interesting and thoughtprovoking questions such as “What popular song was written in response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor?” “What song was Newburyport’s own veritable “chair-man,” Henry Fox, shares his 30 years of wisdom on chair design and construction on Saturday, November 19, at 1 p.m. at Fox Brothers Furniture Studio, 39 Liberty Street, Newburyport. The event is the latest in the Newburyport Preservation Trust’s “Do It Ye Self” series. The two-hour program, presented as a give-and-take discussion about the design considerations that go into making a chair, will touch on specific chair designs, the maker’s own influences, and other issues unique to chairs. Questions for the presenter are welcome. MASSACRE ON THE MERRIMACK Early on March 15, 1697 a band of Abenaki warriors raided the English frontier village of Haverhill, Massachusetts. Striking swiftly, the Native Americans killed twenty-seven men, women, and children, and took thirteen captives, including 39-year-old Hannah Duston and her week-old daughter, Martha. A short distance from the village, one of the warriors murdered the squalling infant. Duston vowed to get revenge. Two weeks into her captivity, Duston and her companions moved among the sleeping Abenaki with tomahawks and knives, killing two men, two women, and six children and the others escaped down the Merrimack River in a stolen canoe. They braved treacherous waters and the constant threat of attack, returning to tell their story and collect a bounty for the scalps.
