Please talk about the importance of SMS
in a growing market of OTTs and Internet
messaging.
The first SMS was in December 1992,
British mobile engineer Neil Papworth
sent the first ever text message: a quick
“Merry Christmas” to Vodafone’s Richard
Jarvis. The technology has been growing in
popularity ever since, until now it became
the first choice of millions of people across
the world.
SMS has changed the world, and the stats
prove it. Almost 7.5 trillion texts were sent
in 2014 according to Portio Research, –
that’s the equivalent of almost 1,000 for
every person on the planet.
OTT is a new challenger has entered
the messaging market, that resulted a
considerable drop in the SMS, any search
for the reasons behind this decline will be
short. Over the past couple of years, we
have witnessed real growth in the use of
over-the-top (OTT) messaging services.
The rise of OTT has been driven once again
by the evolution of mobile technology, and
most of these programs are free, meaning
users only have to pay for their internet
connection and the device they use.
As with most technologies, however, there
are downsides. The many different internetbased
messaging applications availability
out there and the market is expanding
rapidly with new players and applications
isn’t necessarily a good thing, as very few
– if any – of the platforms out there are
compatible with others; instead, they are
in competition. That means one group of
friends is likely to use one platform, while
another group will be relying on something
else completely.
Being these applications are internet-reliant
technologies, security is also an issue to
consider. Most messages will be encrypted
but flaws have been exposed in even the
biggest applications. With these programs
often given access to full contact lists as
well, it’s not just the main user at risk – it
could be their friends and family members
too.
Whereas the SMS have been around much
longer, it solves all of the issues mentioned
above, while also offering users and
marketers plenty of other benefits.
SMS is a standard service which is
different from services offered by different
companies. It’s used in handsets made by all
manufacturers, and doesn’t require the user
to download any applications. This opens
the audience up massively.
OTT still has a long way to go before it can
match the reach of SMS. Mainly because
messaging apps can only be used on
smartphones with internet connectivity.
Text messaging, can be carried out on any
standard mobile phone. This means it’s
possible to reach the demographic groups
and emerging markets.
