News New construction pay index reveals earnings winners and losers The nation’s first ever construction pay trends index has been launched to reveal that Wales has seen the biggest (5.3%) year-on-year increase in earnings amongst self-employed tradesman – compared to just a 1.8% uplift nationally across England. The new ‘Construction Pay Trends’ index, which can be accessed at hudsoncontract.co.uk/constructionpay-trends/, has been developed by construction’s leading professional workplace audit and contract solutions provider, Hudson Contract, and harnesses payroll data from over 2,000 building firms across England and Wales. The interactive tool reveals weekly pay differences by region, age and sub sectors such as bricklaying and joinery through to roofing and surfacing contractors. Providing tradesman, building apprentices and other industry analysts with a unique insight into pay levels, it also reveals the impact weather, location and economic factors have on earning potential. DHF offer guidance for CE marking of security doorsets In a bid to clear up confusion in the marketplace regarding CE marking of external doorsets with security performance attributes, the DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) is advising its members on the legal situation. Confusion has occurred because some door suppliers are claiming CE marking is not necessary for external pedestrian doorsets that have third party security ratings such as to LPS1175 or CERTISECURE STS 202. They wrongly claim these products need not be classified as external pedestrian doorsets, but can be classified as security barriers and as such are not required to be CE marked to EN 14351-1 which covers external performance characteristics such as, for example, resistance to wind load, water tightness, air leakage and impact resistance. However, in an advisory bulletin just published by the DHF, members are being informed that legally these products must be CE marked; every EN 14351-1 external doorset must be supported by a Declaration of Performance (DoP) listing the CE marked external characteristics of the doorset, but may not include reference to any achieved security performance to the standard EN 1627 or others. Britcon completes extension for outdoor learning centre Britcon has completed the design and build of a new £720k accommodation building as part of an extension to an award winning outdoor learning centre in Ilkley for Bradford City Council. Nell Bank is a local authority outdoor education centre in Bradford, where children of all ages and abilities can enjoy learning in the outdoors. Conceived in 1977 by the then Lord Mayor of Bradford, Paul Hockney, as part of his Appeal, the Centre is now administered by Bradford City Council on behalf of the trustees of the Nell Bank Silver Jubilee Trust. In response to expansion plans drawn up in 2014, Britcon was commissioned to provide a new facility to extend capacity for overnight accommodation at the popular centre. Britcon has delivered a new dormitory block allowing space for 64 beds with living space and shower/toilet facilities. It utilised the Structural Insulated Panel System (SIPS) which is timber clad for maximum insulation and energy efficiency. Allow councils to borrow to build new homes, FMB tells Chancellor Allowing local authorities to borrow to build homes could both help tackle the housing crisis and mitigate any emerging economic uncertainty, the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has said ahead of the Autumn Statement. “The Autumn statement presents an opportunity for the new Chancellor to think creatively about how to address the country’s growing housing crisis,” said Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB. “We simply aren’t building enough new homes to meet current demand, which is why we’re calling for the Chancellor to empower local authorities to borrow money to build thousands of new social homes.” At a time of political and economic uncertainty, a sensible programme of investment like this could both significantly boost housing output and provide a welcome shot in the arm to a sector that is still jittery over its prospects for the next few years. Gas engineers and other stakeholders can now make their voices heard and share their industry views for the Gas Safe Register’s ‘Decade Review,’ the most comprehensive industry report of its time. The online survey is now live and can be accessed at http://bit.do/DecadeReviewSurveyA. It will also be sent direct to those registered engineers for whom Gas Safe have an email address. Anyone who wishes to send in further information relating to the Decade Review, or take part in focus groups, can also do so by emailing DecadeReview@accent-mr.com. And it seems that the advantages of retrofitting and energy efficiency are being noticed everywhere – even on places of worship! Gloucester Cathedral is installing 150 solar panels as part of the Church of England’s Shrinking the Footprint campaign, reducing the 1000 year old building’s energy costs by 25%.
