Appendix IV: 21st Century Skills
In an attempt to put a working definition on what constitutes 21 st century skills in education, a group
comprising academics, governments and three major technology companies, Microsoft, Intel and Cisco
collaborated on a major research project Assessment and Teaching of 21st Century Skills (ATC21S) (Binkley
et al., 2012).
The table below maps the skills, identified in Ireland by the NCCA as being essential for all learners to
develop as they progress through the education system at each stage of the Irish education continuum,
and places them in the context of the ATC21S skills categories.
