OPERATOR NEWS
Belfast based Hireco
secure £500k deal with
trailer giant Krone
Hireco, the Northern Ireland
based company which
provides a full rental, leasing
and 24/7 breakdown service
for trucks and trailers
(across the UK and Ireland)
is delighted to announce
an investment of £500k in
securing the purchase of 20
GRP box vans from leading
trailer manufacturer Krone.
Hireco now employs over 100
people across the UK and Ireland,
with depots in London, Manchester,
Reading, Belfast and Dublin. The
company was set up 30 years ago,
and has more than 5,000 vehicles on
the road across the UK and Ireland.
This deal underlines Hireco’s
commitment to investment in fleet
having spent £25m last year and
£20m so far this year.
Hireco Commercial Director Tony
Wan was keen to highlight his
reasons for choosing Krone trailers
in this investment:
“Our customers need the assurance
of high security and secure loading
when conducting logistical tasks.
Krone’s dry liners have a unique
door locking mechanism which
guarantees against break ins
and owing to the trailers’ inherent
strength, they can also cope with
form-fitted loads without the need
to strap. Furthermore, they come
with Code XL certification which is
important for our European service.”
In addition, Tony talked about the
properties of the trailers and how
buying quality equipment creates
dividends long term:
“Flexibility is key to a
good rental trailer and
in this regard, the Dry
Liners tick the box.
The specification achieves
2.7m internal height for
UK & Ireland with an
overall height of 4m for
European use, therefore
compatibility with road
safety across Europe is
covered. Our customers
will be delighted to be
able to avail of Krone
trailers as our business
grows and invests in
the future.”
Hireco rents trucks and trailers
to industry leading transport and
logistics companies including
Wincanton and DHL, as well as
Norbert Dentressangle and Asda.
Hireco also provide transport
companies with long term fixed
price servicing and breakdown
cover from its 24/7 service centre
located in Belfast.
Established in Dublin, Hireco
now has seven outlets throughout
the UK and Ireland supplying
premium equipment for contract
hire and rental. Hireco has grown
by redefining articulated rental,
providing high quality equipment
while introducing pioneering
concepts in customer service.
An established market leader,
Hireco places customer
requirements at the core of its
operation. The continual fleet and
lorry investment means Hireco has
an unrivalled rental offering.
OPERATOR NEWS
Logistics specialist
combats vehicle
break-ins
with new high
security trailer
Kersey Freight has taken delivery
of 15 Dry Liner box trailers from
Krone Trailers UK which, says the
company, give them security against
migrant problems and provide
additional load capacity.
With daily destinations throughout
Europe, Kersey Freight is keenly
aware of the potential risk of migrant
stowaways at all major ports and
as such, the company has taken
provision to guard against break ins.
Fleet Manager Robert Steele explains:
“The Dry Liners offer better security
against immigrants at Calais
because the rear doors are more
secure. We have found with other
box vans that use conventional
hinge pins and door locking bars on
the outside, that the immigrants can
unbolt the door bars and hinge pins,
remove the door and enter the trailer.
Then the door is refitted. In these
circumstances, the driver checks
his trailer the following day and sees
that the seal is still intact; the door
lock is still on and therefore he has
no reason to suspect it has been
tampered with. The consequences of
this can of course be serious.”
To combat this type of problem and
for all-round improved security, Krone
has designed the Dry Liner doors
with the door locking bars inside the
door, whereby the hinge pins are not
accessible from the outside.
Furthermore, the hinged stainless
steel door locking bar, once in the
locked position, covers the door
handles which means no entry
can be gained. This, according to
Kersey Freight, provides guaranteed
security against even the most
determined criminal.
The Dry Liner, which was launched
by Krone in the UK during
September 2015, also enables
Kersey Freight to gain additional
load capacity, which Robert says is
a key benefit when loading goods
that require extra volume.
“These box vans have a low profile
roof (no roof bars) which gives us
increased load capacity: Sometimes
it means we can get an extra layer
of goods in the trailer when loading
to the roof. Also, says Robert, the
roof is strong, which is an added
plus for security. We have found
roofs on other box vans to be flimsy,
which has led to leaking roofs and
damaged goods.”
Krone’s Dry Liner is designed to work
in the UK, Ireland and European
markets and with a fifth wheel height
of 1250mm, common to the UK, the
total height is 4100mm. With the fifth
wheel height at 1150mm, common
to mainland Europe, the overall
height is 4000mm, yet an internal
height of 2,700mm (8ft 10inches) is
still achieved.
“Also important for us is the Code XL
certification” adds Robert.
“The Dry Liner is built for strength
and high load retention and the EN
code certainly bears this out. The
container-type front bulkhead wall
is tested to retain 50% of the load
while the sidewalls will retain 40%.
The rear doors, also containertype
flush steel, will hold 30% of
the load. With this sort of strength
and loading capability, we have a
premium trailer fit for purpose and
given its European credentials, we
also expect to benefit from high
residual values when the Dry Liners
eventually leave our service.”
The Kersey Freight fleet comprises
67 trailers, including curtainsiders
and container carriers, while traction
is provided by a mixture of 20
Scanias & DAFs. Service for the
tractors comes from Scania dealer,
Truck East in Stowmarket and the
DAFs from Chassis Cab in Great
Blackenham, Ipswich.
The company also operates 50,000
sq.ft. of managed warehousing and
cross-docking facilities within 20 miles
of Felixstowe in Suffolk - which forms
the hub of its port-to-door supply chain
across the UK and Europe.
European operator, TJ Hood looks
to Krone for loading flexibility
TJ Hood Transport, the
European haulage, distribution
and warehousing operator
has added a number of Profi
Liner curtainsiders to their fleet
which, says the company,
allow faster, more flexible and
more secure loading.
Supplied by Krone, the new
curtainsiders are specified with
sliding roofs and come with Krone’s
unique Multi-Lock loading system
which has up to 130 strapping points
along each side rave.
“We provide a general service
which caters for virtually any load,”
explains Mark Hood “and so the
flexibility of these trailers is key to
our operation. The loading access
is good and with so many strapping
points on either side, we can safely
secure all types of cargo at any
point along the trailer bed, which is
ideal for groupage and mixed loads.
Also, we can hook and un-hook from
inside the closed curtain which is a
benefit for the drivers.”
Established in 1972 and based
in Crumlin near Belfast Harbour,
TJ Hood is a family run firm with
a reputation for reliability and
expert knowledge of the European
transport market.
The company operate a
mixed fleet of Euroliners,
vans, flatbeds, low
loaders, container carriers
and 7.5 tonne curtainsider
trucks with tail lifts.
“It’s important for us to keep a
modern and diverse fleet.” Adds
Mark. “That way, we remain
competitive and can be confident
in providing a reliable and efficient
service. Certainly, these latest
trailers from Krone match our
requirements and the code XL
certification that comes with them is
a significant tick in the quality box.”
The TJ Hood fleet is continually
modernised and consists of Scania,
Daf and Volvo tractors – all of which
are equipped with satellite tracking,
which should the need arise,
enables Mark and his team to keep
their customers in the loop 24 hours
a day regarding each vehicle’s
location.
The Profi Liner curtainsiders are
manufactured by Krone in Werlte,
Germany and supplied by Krone’s
Ireland sales operation. Krone
currently produces over 40,000 units
per annum from its five production
plants, four of which are located in
Germany and one is in Turkey.
