In ancient times winemaking was carried out<br />

using primitive methods which did not involve<br />

much maceration, leaving the skins with<br />

the juice...<br />

SEE, SWIRL, SMELL, SIP & SPIT OR SWALLOW<br />

Even in Champagne during the<br />

Middle Ages, wines were more red<br />

than white until it was realised that<br />

it was the skins that imparted the<br />

colour to the wine.<br />

After the Second World War the<br />

Portugese started to produce a<br />

slightly sparkling rosé wine called<br />

Mateus Rosé.<br />

Thus the wines were very lightly coloured.<br />

As time progressed and the Greeks and Romans became<br />

more into winemaking, the realisation that letting the wine sit<br />

with the skins for a time led to darker more coloured wine.<br />

This and others set records which<br />

led to Rosés being taken seriously.<br />

More recently ‘Blush’ wines have<br />

become trendy, particularly White<br />

Zinfandel.<br />
