Ambassador Alvarez
was the current chairman
of the Board of Directors at
West Indies Oil Company
(WIOC) at the time of his
death.
He is being hailed for his
role in negotiating the Venezuelan
government’s involvement
in the ownership
of WIOC. Currently, Venezuela
owns 25 percent of the
shares in the company.
Prime Minister Browne
credit’s the late ambassador’s
role in the successful
completion of the negotiations
and for his overall
vision to move WIOC forward.
“This is a very sad situation
with the passing of Ambassador
Alvarez. He was
Some customers of the
state-owned utility and telecommunications
company,
someone who brought a significant
amount of skills to
the company. As you know,
we are partnering with Venezuela,
and the ambassador
was their representative and
we will miss his skills and
knowledge,” PM Browne
noted.
Non Resident Ambassador
to Japan, Anthony Liverpool,
described the late
Venezuelan diplomat as a
gifted representative for the
people of that South American
country.
“He was very involved,
very engaging and he was
very active in the process
towards making WIOC an
international petroleum facility
and hence his chairmanship
of the WIOC
APUA, are currently receiving
faster, cheaper internet
of the service
He added that Ambassador
Alvarez was also very
active as Venezuela’s permanent
representative to the
OAS. “This, for him, was a
major challenge in defending
his government and
country’s position given the
current political situation in
the country,” he stated.
According to Liverpool
the region has lost an
important soldier who has
championed the values that
have kept the hemisphere together
and stronger.
PM Browne along with
Foreign Affairs Minister,
Charles Max Fernandez
and WIOC CEO, Gregory
Georges are in Venezuela to
attend the funeral.
Faster internet is here!
has been delayed.
The announcement from
Telecommunications Minister,
Melford Nicholas, said
despite the setback the government
is moving full speed
ahead with plans to see the
state-owned company offer
up to 10 times faster speed
internet service at a price of
$75.00 monthly.
The minister said the
funds to conclude negotiations
with Southern Fiber,
the company that is offering
broadband connectivity, are
now available and he expects
the successful completion
of negotiations to take
place during this week.
its fiber service and in
many other areas the implementation
of a system-wide
He further added that
APUA has confirmed that
to see consumers in Antigua
pay a higher rate for
Fitzroy gets life in prison after re-sentencing
By Renio Abbott
Fitzroy Jarvis was found
guilty for the murder of
Lindie Scotland a 40-yearold
farmer who was found
dead on his farm in Bethesda.
On 7th June, 1998 Jarvis
had a grudge against
the deceased and lured him
into the bushes at Morris
Looby, chopping him to
death.
After committing such
a gruesome crime Jarvis
returned back to work as if
nothing happened.
The deceased came for
him at his home in a car
they both had a conversation
and both agreed to
meet at Morris Looby area.
Jarvis gave the deceased
directions and the decease
brought along Sylvester
Payne and they both drove
in a bushy area.
As the deceased arrived
he complained that his vehicle
had hit a stone and
the ‘oil pan’ of the vehicle
is damage.
Jarvis advised the deceased
to park his car so
the front would be facing
the bushes, and parked his
car long side the back of
the deceased car, the defendant
agreed.
Jarvis, the deceased and
Payne went further into
the bush where Jarvis was
leading.
Jarvis then told Payne
to wait and the decease
and Jarvis went further into
the bushes. Payne walked
back to the vehicle to relax,
shortly after he heard the
deceased shouted “Obal
Murder!”.
Payne ran back to the
nearby village and went to
the home of the deceased’s
brother and gather up a few
other people and went back
into the bushes where the
vehicle was parked and Jarvis
car was gone.
They then walk to where
the shout came from and
someone stumbled over the
body of the deceased.
Jarvis explained that he
went into the bush with the
deceased to collect some
drugs and returned to his
vehicle for his cutlass trying
to catch up with the deceased
and heard him shout
“ras you cut me, me dead
now”.
By Renio Abbott
On a quiet morning at approximately
1:30 am on the December 17th, 1997,
Attley Alexander set fire to the home of
Jacqueline Simon who was living with
her three daughters.
Simon and Alexander had been involved
in an intimate but very abusive
relationship.
Simon decided to end the relationship,
the abusive nature of which resulted
in a restraining order being issued
against Alexander in court.
In the days leading up to the tragic
incident, the convicted murderer expressed
his intent in killing Simon and
her children.
On the day in question, Simon and
two of her daughters Amber Kames 13
and Sophia Jones 10 years old respectively,
were unable to escape the blaze
so it was they perished. Simon was 9
months pregnant. Her eldest daughter
awoke while the house burned, and
barely managed to escape the inferno
with her life.
The remains of two burnt persons
were discovered along with the remains
of the building.
Outside the house was a third person
a young female badly burnt and
barely alive; both died a few hours later
at the hospital.
The remains of the young fetus,
whose limbs were burnt and shortened
were also found at the scene. Simon received
burns to about 90% of her body.
On November 9th, 1999 the Alexander
was found guilty of all four murders,
and was sentenced to death.
Jarvis then said he ran
out the area dropping his
shoe and other items took
his car and left. Jarvis was
sentenced to death.
The re-sentencing commenced
by High Court
Judge Darshan Ramdhani
court on 19th September,
2016 after reviewing the
entire matter, with the sentencing
delivered on 28th
November 2016.
Jarvis has now been
sentenced to Life of an indeterminate
life imprisonment
with a 30-year minimum
period. All time spent
in detention for the offence
will be taken into consideration
at the expiration of
the minimum period of 30-
year sentence on 11th July
2000.
Alexander sentenced to 42 years for 1997 murders
In 2000 a death warrant was read to
him, however hours before his execution
a stay was granted.
Although no further steps were
taken to carry out the sentence, he remained
on the prison’s record as a man
sentenced of death.
In 2015 the state obtained an order
indicating that the death sentence was
unconstitutional and ordering that Alexander
should be brought before the
High Court to be sentenced for the
crime committed in 1997.
High Court Judge Darshan Ramdhani
facilitated the re-sentencing exercise
which and on September 19th,
2016 a sentence of an indeterminate
life imprisonment with a minimum
period of 42 years was deemed to be
appropriate.

Sandals hosts the ‘fun prince’ for a second time
Castries, St Lucia—The staff of
the Sandals Grande St Lucian Spa and
Beach Resort are still basking in the
afterglow of hosting Britain’s Prince
Henry of Wales, better known as Prince
Harry, who spent two days in this idyllic
island, the third stop on a tour of
seven Caribbean nations with strong
historic links to the monarchy.
Prince Harry for the second time
in four years earned the enthusiastic
adulation of Sandals Chairman Gordon
‘Butch’ Stewart who described him as
“the fun prince” and suggested that
he, along with his elder brother Prince
William, “will secure the monarchy for
a long time to come”.
Stewart’s reference was apparently
to the widely held view that the British
monarchy was losing popularity, especially
among young people not tied to
the traditions of Buckingham Palace
and The Queen, his 90-year-old grandmother
in whose honour he is touring
the region.
But at the Sandals St Lucian located
on the Pigeon Island Carriageway,
there was not the slightest hint of royal
skepticism as the electricity generated
by Prince Harry surged across
the sprawling property connecting the
mainland from the fortified pigeon island
that was instrumental in Britain’s
14-time war with the French to secure
the Saint Lucian colony.
After frenzied weeks of security
and other logistical detailing, Prince
Harry arrived at the resort on November
24, 2016 from the docks at Pointe
Seraphine in Port Castries to a royal
welcome from Sandals General Manager
Winston Anderson and his team of
resort executives.
He made a speedy changeover before
being whisked away to the official
residence of the island’s Governor
General, Dame Pearlette Louisy, for a
cocktail held in his honour.
“Prince Harry did not forgo the opportunity
to take part in the renowned
Sandals Resorts International Discovery
Gourmet Dining,” beamed GM Anderson.
“Upon his return to the resort,
the prince and a select group of 13 others
took advantage of the culinary expertise
of Sandals’ chefs in an intimate
setting in the Langara Room. Rave
reviews from the group, including the
prince himself, continue to pour in on
the excellence of both the food and the
service of the Sandals team. He was
thoroughly impressed and most importantly
relaxed,” Anderson added.
Following dinner, it is ‘rumoured’
that the prince and a select few of his
security detail ventured into the resort’s
signature ‘Ole London Pub’ where they
interacted with all present, including a
considerable number of United Kingdom
visitors on resort.
Anderson said that Prince Harry had
chosen Sandals as his point of refuge in
this hectic and spotlight-heavy journey
on behalf of the Royal Family, and it
was “our responsibility and privilege to
not only host him but to ensure that his
security, privacy and all else was taken
care of. He has commended the team
personally and we are exceedingly happy
to have participated in this historic
visit”, the general manager said.
Topping off the prince’s visit and
Sandals hospitality was a
partnership cricket exhibition
match at the Darren
Sammy Cricket Stadium in
Beausejour between two
teams competing on behalf
of His Royal Highness and
the Prime Minister. A group
of UK Journalists dubbed the
‘Exiles’ from publications
that include The Time, The
Spectator, Daily Mirror, Daily
Mail, Daily Express, Sun
Online and Metro among
others – matched up against
a select Saint Lucian team
for an excellent contention
that drew a considerable local
audience.
The prince himself enjoyed
it thoroughly and in
the company of Prime Minister
Allen Chastanet presented
medals to the respective
teams and exchanged
signed cricket bats.
Following this, he
again hosted a small group
for brunch at the Sandals
Grande Saint Lucian Spa &
Beach Resort before departing
for journey to Pigeon
Island, one of the country’s
national landmarks, to attend
an outdoor exhibition
highlighting various conservation
projects run by
the young people of Saint
Lucia.
Prince Harry also unveiled
the dedication plaque
designating the Castries
Water Works Reserve and
surrounding rainforest as St
Lucia’s contribution to The
Queen’s Commonwealth
Canopy Project. From there
he travelled by boat from the
north of Saint Lucia to one
of the most beautiful parts of
the island, the south-western
town of Soufriere that sits
between the iconic Pitons.
Prince Harry arrived at
the harbour to the sights
and sounds of a Saint Lucian
street festival, with traditional
food and drink on
offer at local markets stalls.
He used the opportunity to
meet members of the public,
youth leaders and local
school children, with a St
Lucian band providing the
soundtrack.
Back at the Sandals
Grande, he took a moment to
personally embrace the team
of culinary professionals
and other staff who catered
to him and his team for two
days.
Upon reflection, Prince
Harry noted that the tranquility
that is Sandals Grande
Saint Lucian Spa & Beach
Resort “is one that must be
experienced in its entirety”.
During his leisure time at
the resort, a spokesman said
that he took advantage of every
opportunity for personal
time and relaxation.
Sandals Grande catered
entirely to the prince, providing
his dinner, breakfast,
brunch and catering exclusively
to the Pigeon Island
function, and Stewart, in
thanking the staff for their
high level performance, said
the resort was “extremely
honoured to have hosted
such a gracious prince”.
It was Stewart’s second
time hosting Prince Harry,
following a glitzy soiree in
2012 when Sandals Royal
Caribbean was the venue
for an evening reception on
the Sandals Private Island
near Montego Bay, Jamaica
during his Caribbean tour to
mark The Queen’s Diamond
Jubilee.
“On that occasion, the
prince stayed up having fun
into the wee hours of the
morning,” Stewart recalled
Sandals’ association with
royalty dates even further
back to the 20th Century
when Sandals Royal Bahamian
was considered royal
escape for British Monarchy.
Sandals Royal Bahamian –
not yet so named - served
as the backdrop for one of
the most endearing love-stories
of all times when King
Edward VIII, abdicated his
throne for the love of his life,
Wallis Simpson.
And with the title of
Duke of Windsor, he was
later appointed to be the
“Governor and Commander
in Chief” of The Bahama Islands.
He is famously known to
have made the dwelling now
known as Sandals Royal
Bahamian home for the five
years he spent in The Bahamas.
Prince Harry’s 14-day
tour also took in Antigua &
Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis,
St Vincent and the Grenadines,
Grenada and Barbados.
He also visited Guyana
on behalf of the British Foreign
Office.

ExxonMobil promises more jobs for
Guyanese after finding oil offshore
GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Multinational
gas company ExxonMobil
won’t be building an oil refinery in Guyana
but it assures that more jobs will
soon be available to Guyanese as it prepares
to begin production there.
Jeff Simon, Country Manager of
Esso Exploration and Production Guyana
Limited, the local subsidiary of
ExxonMobil, has told the Guyana Manufacturing
and Services Association
(GMSA) that there was not enough oil
to ensure the viable operation of a refinery.
The oil giant has found an estimated
1.8 billion barrels of high quality crude
at Liza2, which has 17 wells.
Exxon signed an agreement with
Guyana to explore the block in 1999. It
covers 26,800 square kilometers (10,350
square miles) and is 160 to 320 kilometers
(100 to 200 miles) offshore.
“[If] you are going to build a refinery,
you need more than Liza to do that,”
he said, adding that Liza was expected
to produce more than the 70, 000 barrels
of oil that Trinidad and Tobago currently
KINGSTON, Jamaica
– Chinese mobile manufacturer
Huawei wants a bigger
slice of the regional pie.
Huawei, one of the leading
network and telecommunications
manufacturers,
will be using Jamaica as a
launching pad into the Caribbean.
It will partner with Intcomex
to distribute its mobile
devices.
“We’re right behind
Samsung, and we make no
apologies; we’re going after
produces.
He pledged the Guyanese would be
at the center of the process.
Against the backdrop of concern that
there was too much foreign input, Simon
said it was nothing more than “a common
misconception” as he outlined the
company’s efforts to hire more locals.
Acknowledging that Guyana did not
have all the requisite skills, he said the
company had taken steps to develop a
pool of skilled workers and service providers.
These, he said, included drillers,
caterers and welders.
“We need to work with our contractors
and government to develop the
training apprenticeships and curriculum
in the local institutions that will support
the skills and talents that we need,” he
Samsung for the number one
Android spot,” said Damion
Barnett, the regional sales
director for consumer business
at Huawei.
He said Huawei was now
number three worldwide in
smartphone sales, shipping
100 million units in October.
Barnett revealed that
Huawei would be pushing
the Mate 8 and P9 dual sim
line to independent resellers
in the Jamaican marketplace
who get their stock from Intcomex.
said.
Simon however pointed out that 325
of the 670 persons currently employed
by the company were Guyanese and this
figure was on track to rise once commercial
production began.
He estimated that as many as 600
workers would be coming to Guyana to
install wells and other equipment and
part of their mandate was to train Guyanese
to take over.
“The production operation will be
very much dominated by local content,”
said Simon.
“We are looking to get some drilling
contracts entered into early and try and
develop some drilling expertise here locally
in Guyana. We are working with
a couple of different vendors who are
starting to do some capability building
and thinking about some courses that
could be useful for starting drilling, basically.”
At the production stage, he announced
60 to 80 workers would be
mentoring locals to perform to execute
the necessary tasks. (Caribbean360)
Huawei has eyes on regional market
He said Huawei planned
to develop the Jamaican
market before expanding its
regional footprint.
“The first order of business
is the stability of Huawei
in Jamaica, which will
bring a new approach to
combining Intcomex’s relationship
with resellers.
Eventually, we will move
out to other countries in the
region,” Barnett noted.
Jamaica’s Minister of
Science, Energy and Technology
Dr Andrew Wheatley
has welcomed the move
by Huawei.
He described the partnership
as “two great companies”
teaming to deliver
information and communications
technology (ICT)
solutions to Jamaicans and
the region.
“It is a pleasure to have
Huawei partnering with Intcomex,
a company with a
regional reach, and I am sure
they are looking to expand
outside of the region,” he
added. (Caribbean360)

ACLM/LTHMC statement on the passing
of The Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro
The Antigua Caribbean
Liberation Movement
(ACLM) and the Leonard
Tim Hector Memorial
Committee (LTHMC)
would like to express profound
condolences to the
Revolutionary Government
of Cuba, its people and the
family of Commander Fidel
Castro on his passing.
Brother Fidel is one
of the greatest leaders of
the 20 th century, and of
all times. Fidel Castro
and his Revolutionary
Government transformed
not only the face of Cuba,
St. John’s, Antigua – The United Progressive
Party (UPP) mourns with the
Government and People of Cuba the loss
of Fidel Castro, President, Statesman, and a
leader with great depth of character recognized
globally.
Fidel Castro was a friend to our Party,
our Administration, our Government, and
Antiguans &
Barbudans, individually and collectively.
His assistance to our people, especially
in the areas of Education, Health Care, and
Civil Works, was not simply generous; it
was munificent, given that Cuba’s economy
and development were not funded by a
capitalist system.
Consequently, his contributions to this
nation – and to so many others – remain
a living testimony and a legacy to his unswerving
desire to elevate humanity regardless
of social circumstances..
Under the guidance and vision of Fidel
Castro, who was particularly committed to
improving the lives of the poor, Cuba has
but also that of Latin
America by making central
for development the vital
social forces, the workers,
farmers, women and youth.
In pre-revolutionary Cuba,
the masses of people were
denied their basic human
rights of Health and
Education. Illiteracy and
poor health conditions were
widespread.
Today, the global
achievement of this island
State in Education and
Health is indisputable. But
this development was not
limited to Cuba. Because of
its internationalism and the
commitment of its people,
Cuba has trained thousands
of students from all over the
globe in every discipline
conceivable and in particular
medicine, and this to
people who would never
have had the opportunity.
The lives of millions in
the Americas, Africa, Asia
and the Caribbean have
changed for the positive as
a result of the Cuban Revolution.
Not only did Fidel
and the Cuban people make
the philosophy of internationalism
very tangible,
UPP salutes Fidel Castro
proven to be a good neighbour and sister-country,
The lives and experiences of
many Antiguans & Barbudans have been
saved, enriched, and broadened by their exposure
to its high standards of medical, academic
and professional development; its
diversity and appreciation of national and
ethnic cultures; and the wellspring of patriotism
that Cuba has consistently exhibited.
Fidel Castro further served as a model
for all leaders considered “Third World,”
demonstrating to those with greater resources
than he that national pride coupled
with vision, sacrifice, hard work and a passion
for excellence could make his country
and his people not only equals but, indeed
an independent nation.
The United Progressive Party salutes
this towering Hero of the Revolution, this
Patriot, this
Caribbean Colossus. May his light and
example continue to illuminate our own
path to development and true independence.
but Fidel influenced and
inspired progressive movements
and organizations
globally and particularly in
Latin America resulting in
the removal of brutal and
dictatorial regimes supported
by Imperial Powers such
as Somoza in Nicaragua,
Stroessner in Paraguay, Pinochet
in Chile etc.
Had it not been for the
sacrifice and internationalism
of the Cuban people
with Fidel at the helm,
apartheid South Africa
and other southern African
states, supported by Western
Colonial and Imperialist
powers, would not be
free today. A small island
state with eleven million
people directly intervened
with their lives, courage
and commitment to defeat
Apartheid South Africa.
It is for that reason that
the indomitable Nelson
Mandela publicly stated
and demonstrated for Fidel
and the Cuban people his
love and respect for the invaluable
contribution to the
liberation of South Africa.
Fidel Castro’s legacy
of positively changing the
lives of the poor and dispossessed
globally will live
on.
History has already absolved
him.
Long live the Cuban
Revolution and its people,
its sovereignty and its independence.

HOROSCOPE
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-
Dec. 21). What is making it
hard for you to deliver the
result you and the others expect?
The answer to this simple
question, applied well,
could lift your mood by 10
points.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan.
19). You’ll seldom find meaning
in a cake, unless it’s the
pink and green cake that’s
melting in the rain in MacArthur
Park. Meaning is, after
all, usually readily found in
annoying and unsatisfactory
things.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.
18). Life gets bigger when
you’re braver and constricts
with fear. Life on the small
scale is no better than an outsize
life; it’s just a matter of
personal preference. Just be
sure that you’re choosing it
and not merely reacting to it.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20).
Gather more information and
put off judgment for as long
as possible. Maybe this one
is not up to you to figure out,
and in that case, you’re free to
apply yourself in better places.
ARIES (March 21-April 19).
If you’re not into it, don’t do
it. If you have to do it, then try
to change the way you think
about it. Make it about the
action, not about the outcome
the action will bring to you.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20).
Get what you want from a
place, and then get out. This
is how your gypsy spirit will
find satisfaction. Keep it moving
along; this is freedom —
or something like it.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21).
You’d like to believe that
there are a “wise few,” yet the
group often gets together and
behaves otherwise. Real leadership
is needed here. Are you
up to it?
CANCER (June 22-July 22).
Many forces of destruction
are captivating, seductive and
beautiful. This is why you
should beware of anything
that crosses your path today
that falls into the “captivating,
seductive and/or beautiful”
category.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Mark
Twain’s advice was to eat what
you like and let the food fight
it out on the inside. However,
today, good digestion will be
a secret key to your success.
Don’t leave it to chance.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22).
It’s mighty fine when the
game is good enough on its
own, but that won’t always be
the case. When it’s not, you
have to be the fun. What you
bring to the table will make
the intolerable thing tolerable.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23).
Your ability to suspend disbelief
helps you enjoy stories
that are crafted for your entertainment.
But when the story
is supposed to be true, no
good can come from ignoring
the glaring discrepancies. Get
to the bottom of it.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21).
You’ll learn from a failed
test. It’s better to fail early
and cheaply. Don’t be afraid
to mess it up in order to see
the boundaries of what you’re
dealing with. You’ll apply that
learning to create a winning
strategy.

Tuesday 29th November 2016
Uneventful day leads to predictable draw
KINGSTON, Jamaica
– There were precious few
sparks on a drama-less final
day as the third round game
between Jamaica Scorpions
and Barbados ended in
a dull draw at Sabina Park
here Monday.
Resuming the day on
153 for four, Pride failed to
muster anything spectacular
enough to turn the tide, and
were dismissed for 273 nearly
an hour after lunch.
Wicketkeeper Mario
Rampersaud struck 36 and
captain Kevin Stoute, 31,
while Justin Greaves finished
on 22 not out.
Debutant left-arm spinner
Fabian Allen claimed
three for 34 while fast bowler
Reynard Leveridge (2-
28), captain and left-arm
spinner Nikita Miller (2-65)
and leg-spinner Damion Jacobs
(2-69) all picked up
two wickets each.
Trailing by 49 on first innings,
Scorpions confidently
reached the close on 112
for two, with opener John
Campbell missing out on
his second half-century of
the game with 49 and opening
partner Shacaya Thomas
getting 43.
Test left-arm spinner
claimed two for 29.
Pride walked away from
the rain-ravaged outing with
nine points while the hosts
picked up 7.6.
The visitors made a safe
start to the day as Stoute and
Rampersaud stretched their
overnight fifth wicket stand
to 67.
Left-hander Rampersaud
was ultra-patient in a knock
requiring 133 deliveries and
144 minutes while Stoute,
a right-hander, struck two
fours and two sixes off 87
balls.
cont’d from pg 16
boundary and Moeen was oddly given two
exploratory overs ahead of either James
Anderson or Stokes.
Until Jadeja picked out long-on when
he tried to up the tempo after tea it had
been an innings largely out of character to
how he is perceived as a batsman.
In terms of balls faced it was the seventh-longest
innings of his first-class career
and one of his most significant in
Tests. Even when he departed the end did
not come swiftly for England as Jayant,
who played with barely an alarm, ticked
over to a 134-ball fifty.
Jadeja only had two previous fifties
in Test cricket: his swashbuckling effort
at Lord’s in 2014, which helped build a
match-winning lead, and a brisk innings
against New Zealand earlier this season,
which hastened a declaration.
This was certainly not a tail-end jolly.
On the second evening, after India had
suffered a wobble of 4 for 56, Jadeja allowed
Ashwin to take the lead and moved
to 8 off 34 balls.
He then sensed a moment to attack
shortly before the new ball, but, on the
third day, except for a skip down the pitch
against Moeen, he did not attempt anything
expansive until taking four boundaries
off a Woakes over shortly before his
dismissal.
Jadeja’s half-century came off 104
balls and was accompanied by the familiar
swordsman celebration but it was the only
bat throwing on display.
The disappointment of him missing a
Once the partnership was
broken, Pride lost their last
six wickets for 53 runs, after
going to lunch at 237 for
seven. Faced with a tricky
period before tea, Scorpions’
fears were eased by Campbell
and Thomas who put on
92 for the first wicket.
The left-handed Campbell,
unbeaten on 45 at the
interval with Scorpions on
81, faced 66 balls and struck
nine fours while Thomas hit
six fours in a 60-ball knock.
(CMC)
century meant we did not see what the follow-up
would be. Stokes tried to prey on
his patience by sending the ball wide outside
off, as he had done to Kohli, but Jadeja
ignored those balls. He benefited from a
bonus four runs when he took a sharp single
to mid-on and Jake Ball’s throw was
not backed up.
Ashwin had continued to time the ball
elegantly until he was lured into a wider
delivery by Stokes, in his first over of the
day, and spooned a catch to Jos Buttler at
backward point to end a stand of 97 with
Jadeja.
However, Jayant, in so many ways a
younger model of Ashwin, from his role
in the team to punching deliveries through
the off side, collected two sweetly-timed
boundaries off Anderson to set him on his
way, but there was no hurry from India.
England’s frustrations - and specifically
Stokes’ - almost reached boiling point
as they worked to break the ninth-wicket
stand.
Umesh Yadav was dropped on 9 by
Cook, to his right at a lone slip, then in
the same over Jayant nicked past Bairstow’s
right glove, leading to an angered
roar from Stokes. But before the over was
done, Jayant heaved low to midwicket.
Stokes and Adil Rashid shared the nine
wickets taken by the bowlers with Stokes
winning the race to a five-wicket haul, his
third in Tests, when he removed Umesh.
The catch for Bairstow meant he set a new
record for wicketkeeping dismissals in a
year. It was as good as the day got for England.
Ashwin rocks England after
India’s lower-order surge
MOHALI - India gave
a lesson in how to take a
grip on a Test match that
was in the balance. Firstly
their lower order built a
commanding lead of 134,
anchored around Ravindra
Jadeja’s career-best 90 and
Jayant Yadav’s maiden Test
fifty, then R Ashwin’s three
wickets left England floundering
on 78 for 4, still 56
behind.
The runs from the bottom
half of India’s order
has been a feature of their
recent Test success and here
they enjoyed one of their
more stellar days. In total,
the last four wickets added
213 to turn a precarious 204
for 6 into a three-figure advantage
and it was the first
time India’s Nos 7, 8 and 9
had scored half-centuries in
the same innings.
From a position at the
start of the day where England
would have hoped
for something near parity
- a manageable deficit of
around 50 at worst - by the
close it felt as though India
had made the definitive
moves of the series.
Joe Root, who had been
promoted to open in place
of the injured Haseeb Hameed,
remained unbeaten
on 36 but Ashwin’s dismissal
of Ben Stokes in the final
over capped a perfect day
for India.
Virat Kohli comes up with a silent celebration after Ben Stokes’ dismissal.
Alastair Cook’s stay was
tortuous. In the space of
four deliveries he survived
two close DRS calls. The
first was an India review
for an appeal given not out
against Jadeja which was,
eventually after some problems
forming the Hawk-Eye
graphics, shown to be missing
leg.
The second was after he
had been given lbw to Ashwin
only for the review to
show the ball pitched outside
leg. However, the reprieve
was brief as Ashwin
worked him over by sliding
a straighter delivery between
bat and pad.
Moeen Ali batted at No.
3, the only spot in the top
nine he had yet to occupy in
Tests, and added to the list
of England’s inglorious dismissals
in the match when
he chipped Ashwin to midon.
It was a lovely piece of
deception from the bowler,
who defeated Moeen in the
flight, but regardless it was
a limp shot.
Just as Root and Jonny
Bairstow were eyeing
the close, the latter fell to
a catch that, as a fellow
wicketkeeper, he would
acknowledge for its skill
as Parthiv Patel stayed low
to take a ball that skidding
through low to graze the
outside edge.
Virat Kohli then pulled
one of his Midas touches
when he recalled Ashwin
in the dying moments of
the session and, with his
first delivery, he spun one
past Stokes’ edge to take
the back pad. It was initially
given not out by Chris
Gaffaney but, with the seconds
ticking down, Kohli
reviewed and was justified.
India were 12 behind
when play resumed but England
made an insipid start
to the day. Chris Woakes’
opening delivery was a legstump
half volley which
Ashwin clipped to the
