Sadly our Men’s 55s and
Women’s 50s will be relegated
from Division 1 but hopefully in
2017 and 2018 they can emulate
the performance of Bruce Walker’s
Men’s 45s going from Division 2
to the championship in just two
years.
Men’s 75: Leon Fattal,
Roger Ambrose, Derek
Howorth, Derek Horwood
Women’s 70: Sue Milton,
Rosemary Spence,
Carol Davies, Mary Harvey,
Ruth Weston, Daphne Clement
Devon and hence just missed
out. Next year beckons for the
strong squad ably led by Chrissie
Runnicles.
Despite comfortable wins
against Essex, Yorkshire, Kent and
Lancashire the Men’s 70s team
disappointingly lost their final
league match to Middlesex and
did not therefore qualify for the
finals this year after contesting the
previous 5 finals with three wins.
After promotion from
Division 2, the Men’s 50s are
to be congratulated for their
3rd place finish in 2016 and
good wins against Lancashire,
Buckinghamshire and Cheshire.
There are 195 tennis venues in
Surrey and players at every one
can aspire to represent their
county as they grow older. There
are so many shining examples of
those who may not have made
the County Junior teams or the
County week teams but now do
really well at Seniors level. Indeed
there are many who didn’t even
take up tennis until their twenties!
Two fine examples are Men’s 60s
singles players Mike Dawe and
Arun Vethakkan. Arun at the age
of 26 was “discovered” by Derek
Howorth practising every day on
the wall at Surbiton LTC!
Finally a mention for all the 2016
team captains who worked hard to
arrange the matches, venues and
travel as well as maintaining team
spirit and directing the strategy:
Chrissie Runnicles (W40), Julie
Willson (W50), Lyn Stirk (W55),
Gillian Bostelmann (W60), Amelia
Robinson (W65), Mary Harvey
(W70), Bruce Walker (M45), Darren
Boner (M50), Steve Alger (M55),
Mark Staniszewski (M60), Peter
Hesz (M65), Grieve Carson (M70),
Derek Howorth (M75).
