9U Boys
Surrey County
Championships 2016
It was the end of August and
we were back at Sutton Tennis
Academy for the 2016 County
Championships. Many thanks to
Sutton for welcoming both us and
the players back, for providing
excellent refreshments and for
keeping the bad weather at bay.
Unfortunately, we were unable
to run any of the qualifying events
but instead dedicated the first
two days of competition to the
Orange event. We watched some
very entertaining and hard-fought
tennis matches over the two days
and everyone went away with
a certificate to recognise their
accomplishments.
The County Champions at 9 &
Under were Hannah Klugman
who beat Natasha Cook 7-2, 7-4,
and Sami Khediri who beat Oliver
Bonding 7-0 7-3. We anticipate
great things from all these players.
Tuesday arrived and we started
the yellow ball competition
running singles events in the 12,
14, 16, 18 and Open categories,
with doubles events for 12U boys,
14U girls, 16U boys and Open
men’s, women’s and mixed.
In addition to the yellow ball
competition was the Green event
for boys and girls. This year we
introduced a Green Mixed Doubles
event which attracted much
interest. Kai-Luca Ampaw and Alex
Gruffat ran out winners in this,
beating Joseph Blackman and
Joshua Pye in the final 0-4, 4-2,
1-0(2). I think we will certainly run
this event again in 2017.
The Red event was held indoors
on the final day of the tournament
alongside the Finals, which were
played outdoors on the clay courts.
A total of 173 red matches were
played on the day so credit must
go to all the players as well as the
court assistants who helped with
the scoring on each court. Many of
the matches were excellent, which
bodes well for the future of tennis
in our county. At the end of play,
8U Boys
Matthew Ground won the boys’
event, beating Freddie Johnson
10-0, with Hannah Klugman
triumphing in the girls’, beating
Martha Ground 10-6.
As with every year, I can’t
thank David Fuchs and Tim
Pearce enough for their pure
professionalism in running this
tournament. Their contribution
makes the Surrey Championships a
great event.
