Ladies County Week Champions
they turned it around, sheer
guts and determination and a
couple of extraordinary points
and took it 10/7. What an amazing
achievement for Jazz and Candy,
the 15 Club is an elite club
especially in group 1 (and as third
pair). A fantastic week for Surrey.”
The format for the National Finals
was different to qualifying with
eight teams in two boxes of four
teams, with the winner of each
box playing each other in the final.
Surrey reached the final against
Hertfordshire, Team Manager
David Lovejoy explains how the
final match transpired:
“After the first two singles
matches against Hertfordshire
we found ourselves 2-0 up with
the 3rds to play. A win at 3 would
make the doubles academic and
Surrey would be the 10 & Under
County Cup Champions. After
holding and losing a match
point in the second set tie-break
Alexandre found himself in a
tough 10 point shootout to decide
the tie. Alexandre regrouped and
refocused and played some great
positive tennis to win the tie-break
after a nail biting finish 10-7 and
in doing so Surrey were the boys
“The boys had created a fantastic
team spirit in fighting back in the
group stage. On Sunday we had a
great warm up and the team were
excited about the day ahead. Guy
den Ouden was our star man, at
4th player, and got us off to an
amazing start. We have never seen
so many winners. Jorge Beltrao
came through a close match at
player 3 but did well to use his
forehand effectively. Arthur Fery
also did a great job on the last day
using his skill and movement to
get the win. Benjamin Heynold
had a tough match against another
GB player Peter Alam to win the
County Cup. He came through
and the boys joined him on court
to celebrate. Well done to Vraj and
Harry who played in the doubles in
the Final.”
