<strong>Project</strong> : Introduction of proprietary DG Set Oil <strong>for</strong> a Green House Gas<br />

(<strong>GHG</strong>) Mitigation project <strong>for</strong> a Green <strong>and</strong> <strong>CleanTech</strong> <strong>UAE</strong><br />

Target:<br />

Without Hydro electric or Nuclear Power, the Diesel Generators are source of Electricity <strong>for</strong><br />

the <strong>UAE</strong> Emirates. The typical Diesel Engine, originally invented by Rudolf Diesel is not<br />

known to be fully or highly efficient, consequently it emits through the exhaust, un-burnt<br />

Hydrocarbon gases, CO2, NOx <strong>and</strong> also carbon particulates as visible smoke.<br />

Objective:<br />

To meet the objective of a reducing the carbon footprint <strong>and</strong> board the <strong>CleanTech</strong> b<strong>and</strong><br />

wagon to fuel the Diesel generators we have to adopt a multiple strategy:<br />

Leverage the nanotechnology knowledge base to dose Diesel Generators with<br />

selected after-treatment additives <strong>for</strong> the fuels <strong>and</strong> lube oil.<br />

Develop proprietary DG Set Oil (API CF4 or CI4 type) that reduces <strong>GHG</strong>.<br />

Adopt best lubrication practices <strong>and</strong> implement Oil Condition Monitoring exercise.<br />

In the second phase of the project it may be prudent to acquire an operational<br />

Genset service centre.<br />

Over a period 2 to 3 years <strong>and</strong> on successful implementation of the above strategies,<br />

dovetail Biodiesel, locally developed by a Group company to fuel Diesel Generators.<br />

Along with biodiesel treat the fuel with green lubricity <strong>and</strong> other fuel additives <strong>for</strong><br />

additional impact.<br />

The ultimate objective is to offer Clean <strong>and</strong> Green Electricity with minimal carbon<br />

footprint. This may be offered as a Total solution, or supply of nano-technology<br />

additivated proprietary DG Set Oil coupled with supply of Biodiesel.<br />

Seek accrual of Carbon credits, if any, as bonus.<br />

Start up activity :<br />

Set up a company in <strong>UAE</strong> to pursue this activity.<br />

Identify Consultants in <strong>UAE</strong> who can submit a <strong>Project</strong> <strong>for</strong> the above.<br />

Set up a <strong>Project</strong> Office in <strong>UAE</strong>, staffed with a<br />

o Technical Researcher <strong>and</strong> report/data compiler<br />

o A Diesel Generator Technician ideally from Cat, Perkins etc..<br />

o Appoint a <strong>Project</strong> Manager.


The initial activity will require a Market research <strong>and</strong> Survey to identify.<br />

o Name,<br />

o Make<br />

o Model<br />

o Capacity<br />

o Fuel consumption, Lube consumption<br />

o Emissions<br />

o Explore <strong>and</strong> discuss progressive conversion <strong>for</strong> fuelling with Biodiesel.<br />

o Diesel Generators in use in a selected area or location to be chosen to conduct<br />

primary trials.<br />

o A running <strong>and</strong> operational Genset service centre <strong>for</strong> acquisition<br />

Medium sized unit<br />

Popular br<strong>and</strong> like Cat, Perkins etc..<br />

Low to medium Capacity – up to 1 MW<br />

Having trained staff up to 15 service technicians/mechanics.<br />

Target<br />

o 1 st stage - Generators of below 0.250 MW capacity<br />

o 2 nd stage – Generators of below 0.500 MW capacity<br />

o Progressively move up to 10 MW capacity Generators<br />

Obtain historical data on the Fuel <strong>and</strong> lube consumption over the past 6 month <strong>and</strong><br />

12 months, as bench mark data<br />

Identify - Diesel Generator technicians <strong>and</strong> mechanics <strong>for</strong> consideration as staff <strong>for</strong><br />

ensuing trials.<br />

Train potential technician’s <strong>and</strong> mechanics <strong>and</strong> download project plans <strong>for</strong> operations,<br />

maintenance of generators.<br />

Ensure staff is trained to take sample of oil, emissions tests <strong>and</strong> sound <strong>and</strong> vibration<br />

recording.<br />

Identify Oils analysis labs where Ferrography, Elemental oil analysis can be<br />

conducted.<br />

Short term activity:<br />

Additionally, identify other potential engine after treatment additive manufacturers.<br />

Identify <strong>and</strong> download <strong>Project</strong> plans <strong>and</strong> tie up with potential c<strong>and</strong>idate users <strong>for</strong><br />

conducting trials.<br />

Acquire or outsource Tests/equipment to conduct basic testing like emissions,<br />

temperature reading, sound reading, vibrations etc..<br />

Prior to trials, use equipment above to record current emissions, temperature, sound<br />

<strong>and</strong> vibrations, as base line data.<br />

Build data above <strong>for</strong> at least 4 weeks of running prior to conducting trials.<br />

Also obtain complete historical data on generator like Fuel <strong>and</strong> lube consumption,<br />

emissions, sound <strong>and</strong> vibrations.<br />

Trials to be conducted on Generators <strong>for</strong> three lube changes <strong>and</strong> data to be recorded.

The core activity of the Enterprise will be exploiting the advancing Nanotechnology<br />

knowledgebase thru dosing <strong>and</strong> treating Generators with after treatment additives.<br />

Consequently, set up a blending plant that will package the product locally.<br />

Offer complete running, operation <strong>and</strong> maintenance of Diesel Generators, without<br />

Fuel.<br />

Incorporate Fuel procurement, storing, supply in above contract.<br />

After Business activity crosses critical mass <strong>and</strong> is self sustaining, offer Franchise to<br />

selected Enterprises <strong>and</strong> Operators in other parts of the GCC <strong>and</strong> Middle East<br />

countries dependent on Diesel Generators <strong>for</strong> electricity.<br />

Exp<strong>and</strong> offering to other countries in the Aspac region.<br />

Stage wise introduction of Fuels like Biodiesel <strong>for</strong> <strong>CleanTech</strong> <strong>and</strong> Green <strong>UAE</strong> by<br />

conducting another series of trials in other GCC countries.<br />

Based on successful trials <strong>and</strong> data generated, present a case to the Government to<br />

promulgate Ordinance or Law that all Generators in the Emirates will necessarily have<br />

to treated with Green & <strong>CleanTech</strong> after treatment additives manufactured <strong>and</strong><br />

dispensed by “Our Enterprise.”<br />

Also propose to the Government that generators in the Emirates should progressively<br />

use only Biodiesel as fuel.<br />

Technology<br />

Adoption of Best Lubrication practice supported by Oil Condition monitoring services <strong>and</strong><br />

coupled with deployment of Nano technology through use of appropriate engine after<br />

treatment additives along with proprietary DG Set Oil, propose to reduce typical Diesel<br />

engine smoke – Opacity 40 to 50% <strong>and</strong> also reduce fuel consumption by at least 2 to 3 %<br />

in the first stage.<br />

As project progresses introduce locally available Biodiesel <strong>and</strong> appropriate fuel additives that<br />

ensures dramatic reduction of Carbon footprint while generating clean <strong>and</strong> green Electricity,<br />

in the <strong>UAE</strong>.
