Allegation of nepotism in
selecting AL candidates

Instead of dedicated leaders and
activists, housewives and relatives
of top-notch leaders of Bogra Awami
League (AL) have been selected
for the upcoming district council
elections, alleged many leaders
and activists of the district Awami
League.
Seeking anonymity, they alleged
that housewives were selected
instead of dedicated female
activists for most of the researved
seats, while wife of the local
lawmaker for Bogra 1 constituency
was nominated for reserved seat
no 1.
Besides, brother-in-law of the
local lawmaker was selected for
ward no 9, just to appease the lawmaker,
the activists said.
The district unit AL on Wednesday
announced the names of the
candidates for the upcoming elections.
For general seats, the following
candidates have been selected by

Tribune that dedicated members
of the party were selected for the

Teachers, students protest

Teachers, students and employees
of different schools and colleges
yesterday observed mourn yesterday,
protesting death of two persons,
including a college teacher.
They observed the programme
under the banner Sammilito Shikhok
Somaj, Mymensingh district unit.
As a part of protest, teachers and
students of all euducational institution
wore black badges. The agitators
also said they would arrange
a protest rally
Two persons, including a college
teacher, were killed, as police
charged batons on them during a
demonstration at Phulbaria, Mymensingh
on Sunday afternoon.
According to local sources,
teachers and students of Phulbaria
Degree College brought out a procession
in the district town around
12:30pm, demanding nationalisation
of the college.
Later, the agitators locked the
Phulbaria-Mymensigh Highway
to realise their demand and police
tried to disperse them, triggering a
clash between police and demonstrators.
Police then charged batons as
well as opened fire on them, leaving
at least 20 people injured.
Of the injured, Safar Ali, a pedestrian,
died on the way to Churkhai
Community Hospital while
Abul Kalam Azad, an associate professor
of Phulbaria Degree College,
died at the hospital. •
Two killed in ‘turf wars’

Two people have been killed in
separate gunfights in Jessore
and Sirajganj.
A young man was reportedly
killed in a gunfight between
two terrorist groups at Panchbaria
in Sadar upazila of Jessore
district early yesterday.
The deceased was identified
as Ripon Hossain, 30, son
of Habibur Rahman, a resident
of Chhoto Anchra of Benapole
port area.
Md Ilius Hossain, officerin-charge
of Jessore Kotowali
police station, said on information
that a gunfight ensued
between two criminal groups,
a team of police conducted a
drive in the area around 1am.
Sensing the presence of the
law enforcers, the members of
both the groups fled away. Later,
police detained Ripon with
bullet injuries at the head.
The injured detainee was
taken to Jessore Medical College
Hospital where doctor declared
him dead.
Police also recovered a
one-shooter gun, one round of
bullet and a bullet shell from
the spot.
In Sirajganj, an alleged robber
was killed in a “gunfight”
with members of Rapid Action
Battalion (Rab) at Jhaoil
in Kamarkhanda upazila on
Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified
as Dulal Hossain, 42, son
of Afzal Hossain, a resident of
Sameshpur village in Belkuchi
upazila.
Assistant superintendent of
police Hasibul Alom, commander
of Sirajganj Rab-12, said on
secret information that a gang
of robbers was preparing for
committing robbery, a team of
the elite force conducted drive
in the area around 9:30pm.
Sensing the presence of
the Rab members, the robbers
opened fire at them prompting
a retaliation that triggered a
gunfight.
At one point, Dulal was
caught in the line of fire and
died on the spot. •
