The dynamic commuter
2011 Toyota Ractis – a perfect blend of
comfort and styling
• Tahsin Momin
The 2011 Toyota Ractis is designed
with the most dynamic features,
paying tribute to the Vitz, on
which it’s based on. The purest
aerodynamic design and its
fabrication of interior and exterior
with obliging quality gives it a
higher rating and it radiates a
lively youth touch to its entire
presence. Even the name itself
is self-explanatory - “Ractis” is
derived from “Run,” “Activity” and
“Space.”
Exterior
With the most vibrant and hightech
engineering, Toyota has given
an entirely fascinating shape to
the Ractis. From its dumping
bonnet to the hatch back, the
entire vehicle is smartly designed.
The crystal brake lights and the
origami shaped crystal headlights
embellish the lively existence of
this car. The chrome accent on the
front grille adds more elegance to
the front end and separates it from
its yore models. The glazing 16-
inch alloy rims make the running
of this car smoother and swifter.
Interior
On the inside though, it’s quite
disappointing. It’s all resolutely
and crushingly Japanese. The
switchgear is chunky to touch and
clunky to operate. There’s even an
odd array of dashboard surfaces
too, of which the most offensive
is a pinstriped two-tone outing
across the instrument binnacle.
Compared to rivals, it feels rather
down-at-heel. But then again, the
car is well packaged and there’s a
lot of space for the rear passengers
and abundant of cargo space at the
back.
There are other appealing
features in this car as well. For
instance the air conditioner, which
is very reliable, and the audio
system that ensures a blissfully
blithe drive. Overall, the interior
is a compact; even though, luxury
might not be its strong suit, the
Ractis tries hard to prove itself
worthy.
Performance
At the heart of the Ractis is a
1.5-litre four-cylinder 1NZ-FE
engine that pumps out 110HP
and 103lb.ft of torque. There is
no shortage of power; hence,
you are most certain to have a
smooth and powerful drive. The
engine is highly efficient. It is
very responsive and has a superb
acceleration. The engine is mated
to a CVT gearbox, which means it
is effortless to drive in heavy traffic
as well as on highways. And the
best part is that it will do 13km/l
inside city, which means less
frequent trips to the gas station.
Safety
On par with safety, the Ractis
comes standard with an antilock
braking system, electronic brakeforce
distribution and dual front
airbags.
Verdict
In a nutshell, the Ractis is
an immaculate car. It is not
unpleasant to live with in terms
of maintenance and most
importantly it comes endorsed
with the reliability of a Toyota. The
2011 Toyota Ractis is a fascinating
machine which is full of modernity
and class.
