Martyred Intellectuals Day observed

People of Bangladesh
observed
the Martyred
Intellectual Day
across the country
yesterday
paying rich tributes
to the intellectuals
who were killed systematically
by the Pakistan occupation army and
their local collaborators at the fag-end
of the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
In Khulna
According to reports of our correspondent,
leaders and activists of different
political and socio-cultural, government,
non-government organisations
and educational institutions placed
wreaths at local Shaheed Minar in the
city early in the morning.
Awami League, BNP, Jatiya Party,
JSD, CPB, vice-chancellors of Khulna
University (KU) and Khulna University
of Engineering and Technology (KUET),
Khulna City Corporation, Khulna district
administration, Khulna District
Council, among others, also paid homage
to the great sons of the country.

Jatiya Party, JSD, CPB, 1971: Genocide,
Tortured and Archive Museum, KU,
KUET, KCC, Khulna Press Club, Khulna
Union of Journalists (KUJ) and other
political and socio-cultural organisations
also organised discussion meetings
marking the day.
In Natore
Local unit of Awami League and its
front organizations, Natore press
club and the district administration
observed the day with various programmes
including discussion and rally,
reports our correspondent.
Awami League and its front organisations
placed wreaths at the portrait
of the father of the nation Bangabandhu
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman led by MP
Shafiqul Islam Shimul in Kandivituwa
area in the town early in the morning.
Natore press club authorities
brought out a procession in the
area in the afternoon.
Later, a discussion was held
at the press club auditorium.
Among others, Deputy Commissioner
Shahina Khatun, Additional
Deputy Commissioner
(Revenue) Muhammad Moniruzzaman,
Deputy Director
of Local Government Office Dr
Azadur Rahman, senior journalist
SM Manjurul Hassan,
Sadrul Huda Devid and the
press club secretary Dulal Sarker
spoke on the occasion while
the press club president Rezaul
Karim Reza presided over the
meeting.
In Magura
To mark the day a one-minute
silence was held at the conference
room of the Deputy
Commissioner of the district,
reports our correspondent.
A discussion was also arranged
at the conference
room. Deputy Commissioner
Mahhabubur Rahman presided
over the meeting while Additional
Deputy Commissioner
Azmol Haque, Additional
Police Super Tariqul Islam,
district freedom fighter commander
Nobuot Ali were present
among others.
The speakers said the Pakistani
soldiers killed the bright
sons of the soil on the eve of the
Independence with the help of
the notorious collaborators to
make Bangladesh meritless.
In Rajshahi
Various political, socio-cultural,
volunteer organizations
and educational institutions,
including Rajshahi University
(RU) and Rajshahi University
of Engineering and Technology
(Ruet), observed the Martyred
Intellectuals Day paying rich
tribute to the martyrs.
In observance of the occasion,
the organisations demanded
completion of the trial
process of the war-criminals
and collaborators and execution
of all convicts awarded
death sentences.
As part of commemorating
the martyred intellectuals, the
groups chalked out various
programmes which included
placing wreaths at Shaheed
Minar, photo exhibition, public
gathering, discussion meeting
and candle lighting on the mass
graves throughout the day, reports
BSS.
Local units of Bangladesh
Awami League and its front organizations
placed wreaths at
Rajshahi College Shaheed Minar
followed by a brief meeting
highlighting significance of the
day early in the morning.
Local unit of Workers Party
of Bangladesh arranged a
candle lighting programme at
Bablaban’ mass-grave together
with placing wreaths on the
memorial plaque.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi University
observed the day
through daylong elaborate
programmes which included
placing wreaths at Shaheed Minar,
discussion meeting, milad
mahfil and probhat ferry.

Uddin, Registrar Prof Entajul
Haque and other teachers,
officers and students placed
wreaths at the Shaheed Minar
this morning.
In Mymensingh
The Martyred Intellectuals Day
was observed at Bangladesh
Agricultural University (BAU)
through paying rich tributes to
the martyred intellectuals who
had been killed on the eve of
the Independence in 1971.
On the occasion, a mourning
procession was brought out
on the campus in the morning
led by its Vice-Chancellor (VC)
Prof Dr Ali Akbar.
A discussion organised by
the BAU Teachers Association
was also held at a community
centre in the area. Prof Ali
addressed the meeting as the
chief guest with president of
Teachers Association Prof Dr
Solaiman Ali in the chair, reports
BSS.

Hossain, Prof Shankar Kumar
Raha, Prof Shachee Amanda
Das, were spoke, among others.
The VC said, “We should disseminate
the spirit of martyred
intellectuals among the young
generations to build Bangladesh
a prosperous country.”
In Rangpur
Begum Rokeya University authorities
organised several programmes
marking the day.
Earlier in the morning, VC
along with Deans of different
faculties and heads of different
departments of the university,
placed wreaths at the nearby
Domdoma Mass Graveyard to
pay due respect to the martyred
intellectuals.
Rangpur (BRUR) Professor
Dr AKM Nurun Nabi said that
the anti-liberation forces wanted
to make the nation talentless
through killing of the intellectuals.
The day was observed in
many other districts of the
country including Chittagong,
Barisal, Sylhet, Madaripur,
Shariatpur, Netrakona, Thakurgaon,
Bagerhat and Comilla. •
