Kentucky Outlasts MSU in Shootout, 40-38
Austin MacGinnis drilled four field goals, including a 51-yarder as time expired,
as Kentucky outlasted MSU in a 40-38 shootout on a cool night in Commonwealth
Stadium. It was the Bulldogs’ second straight loss on the final play. The
tandem of Nick Fitzgerald and Fred Ross connected for a 7-yard touchdown
pass that gave MSU a 38-37 lead with 1:09 to play. The clutch third down conversion
capped a 14-play, 77-yard drive that erased a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit.
However, the Wildcats marched 46 yards on six plays into field goal territory.
UK looked to pull away early in the fourth quarter, nearly making it a 17-point
advantage before a crucial series by a pair of MSU underclassemen. UK played
a second down from the MSU 5 before true freshman Jeffery Simmons forced
a fumble of quarterback Stephen Johnson. The ball was then picked up and returned
81 yards for a touchdown by sophomore Mark McLaurin. The 14-point
swing brought the Bulldogs to within 34-31 with 9:33 to go. Fitzgerald finished
with his third 100-yard rushing game of the year. DeAndre Ward and Gerri
Green led the Bulldogs with eight tackles apiece, while Johnathan Calvin added
seven tackles, including two for loss and one sack.
