Nick Fitzgerald tied an SEC and MSU record with seven touchdowns responsible
for as the Bulldogs went on to a 56-41 victory over FCS foe Samford on
Homecoming. Fitzgerald matched the record of Dak Prescott and became the
first MSU QB to post a 400-yard passing/100-yard rushing game. He rushed for
two scores and tied Prescott’s school record for passing touchdowns with five.
The Bulldogs put a school-record 669 yards of total offense. Donald Gray finished
with a career-best 207 receiving yards, and he tied the school record for
receiving touchdowns with three. Gray and Fitzgerald connected for a pair of
70+ yard touchdown passes in the first half, giving the Bulldogs a 28-20 lead at
halftime. Fred Ross broke school records for consecutive games with a catch (30)
and 100-yard receiving games (9) as he finished with nine catches for 107 yards
and one score. Gray’s 51-yard TD catch -- his third of the night -- followed by
DeAndre Ward’s 35-yard interception return put the Bulldogs up 49-26. Fitzgerald
capped the scoring with a 1-yard run that put the game away. Richie Brown
finished with a game-high 13 tackles. The squads combined for 97 points, 185
plays and 1,296 yards of total offense.
