Husband takes
life of wife

A housewife was killed allegedly by
her husband at Barasinga village in
Mathbaria upazila in Pirojpur yesterday.
The deceased was Rabia Begum,
wife of Sagor Sardar from Munshiganj.
According to Mathbaria police:
“Rabia was staying at her father’s
house, following a family dispute
with her husband. On Wednesday,
Sagor went to Barasinga to bring her
back, but Rabia refused his proposal.”
Later, Sagor stabbed Rabia when
she went outside of her room at
night to use the bathroom, leaving
her critically injured.
Hearing her screams, locals rescued
her and sent her to Upazila
Health Complex, where on-duty
doctors declared her dead. Locals
caught Sagor from the spot and
handed him over to police. •
Bus owners block
Dhaka-Sylhet highway,
create traffic gridlock

Bus owners in Brahmanbaria
blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway
yesterday afternoon protesting leguna
– a human haulier service –
running on the highway.
The one-hour blockade created
huge traffic congestion on the
highway.
Leaders and workers of a local
bus owners' association blocked
the road by strategically placing
buses around Ashuganj roundabout
from 12pm and 1pm.
“It is also dangerous to drive
human hauliers on a highway.
They disrupt movement of buses;
there have been several accidents
already,” said Enayet Ullah Emon,
organising secretary of Brahmanbaria
District Bus Owners-Workers’
Oikkya Parishad.
The protesters withdrew the
blockade when police went to the
spot and assured them of taking
legal actions against those responsible
for the leguna service.
“There is a long-standing dispute
between the leguna owners
and the local bus owners here,”
said Muhammad Selim Uddin, OC
of Ashuganj police station. “We are
taking necessary actions in this regard.”

hampered severely for the last
three months, as the post of vice
chancellor has remained vacant.
The former vice chancellor Prof
Ruhul Amin retired from his job on
September 26 this year and since
then academic and administrative
activities at the university had almost
stalled, said Dr ATM Shafiqul
Islam, proctor of the university.

Night guard stabbed
to death

Shuku Shoren, who had joined Lutheran
Mission and Model Primary
School in Dinajpur’s Awliapukur
as a night guard two days ago, was
stabbed to death early yesterday.
According to locals, a thief
sneaked into the school premises
after midnight and stabbed 40-
year-old Shuku with a knife.
Shuku was the son of late Lokkhon
Shoren from Awliapukur.

spot at night. Shuku was killed by a
thief and the cause of the death is
excessive bleeding. Locals took him
to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital,
where he was declared dead by

members of Rapid Action Battalion
and Detective Branch of Police visited
the spot yesterday morning.
Iqbalur said: “We have given
the victim’s family Tk20,000 and
the government will provide them

Besides, approval of VC was required
to hold semester examinations
and appoint examiners, he
said.
“So, if a new VC is not appointed
as soon as possible, there is a possibility
of session jam,” added Prof
Harun.
Prof Saifur Rahman, registrar of
HSTU, said: “All activities, which
require the approval of VC, including
giving stipends to students,
have been stopped. Wages of the
staff, who work on daily basis, cannot
be paid also for the same reason.”
Mohiuddin Nur, a student of the
university, said classes and examinations
were not being given properly,
which might cause session
jam.

Fish farmer
killed in
Rajshahi

A fish farmer was allegedly stabbed
to death by miscreants at Sadhonpur
Leppara village in Puthia upazila,
Rajshahi on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified
as Amzad Hossain, 35, son of late
Ayon Ali from the same village.
Puthia police station Inspector
Rakibul Hasan said: “On Wednesday
night, Amzad, a fish farmer,
left his home to visit his farm, but
after a while he was found by locals
lying beside the road, covered in
blood.”
Locals rushed him to Puthiya
Upazila Health Complex, where the
doctor on duty declared him dead,
he added. On information, police
went to the health complex and
took the body to Rajshahi Medical
College Hospital for an autopsy. •

Road accidents kill 4 in 3 districts

Four people, including mother and
daughter, were killed in separate
road accidents in Noakhali and Satkhira
yesterday.
In Noakhali, a woman and her
daughter were killed instantly,
as a bus hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw,
which was carrying them, on
Sonaimuri-Begumganj bypass road
in Sadar upazila in the morning, reports
our Noakhali correspondent.
Deceased Hasina Akter, 35,
wife of Harun-ur-Rashid and her
daughter Himu Akter, 10, were
residents of Ghoskamta village in
Sonaipuri upazila. Later, police recovered
the bodies.
Our Satkhira correspondent reports,
an elderly man was killed
when a speeding truck hit him
from behind at Raita village in Kalaroa
upazila in the morning.
Deceased Md Ojiwar Rahman,
65, was a resident of Salimpur village
in the upazila.
OC said: “A sand-laden truck hit
Ojiwar from behind in the area while
he was returning home from Raita
riding a bicycle around 11:00am,
leaving him dead on the spot.”
Later, police sent the body to Sadar
Hospital for autopsy.
In Lakshmipur, a teenager was
killed and the driver of the auto-rickshaw,
which rammed into a roadside
tree, received severe injuries at Udmara
village in Raipur upazila of the
district yesterday morning, said our
district correspondent.
Deceased M Sohel, 14, son of M
Kokhon, was a resident of the same
village.
M Lokman Hossain, officer-incharge
(OC) of Raipur police station,
said the accident took place
when the auto rickshaw, carrying
Sohel hit a roadside tree in the
area, leaving its passenger dead on
the spot.
Auto rickshaw driver Kauser
was admitted at Lakshmipur Sadar
Hospital. •
