The tale follows Tevya’s love, faith and pride as he faces oppression, holds on to tradition and tries to keep his family together. Though the musical was written more than 50 years ago, it addresses a refugee crisis which is, unfortunately, still very relevant in today’s world, said musical director John Knight. “People are forced to leave their homeland and start over,” Knight said. “This play talks about how a family might need to bring their traditions with them; something that is still very real. We’re committed to finding ways to incorporate the current status of refugees into with what’s going on stage.” With music by Jerry Block, lyrics by Sheldon Hamick and a book by Joseph Stein, the Broadway musical won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was adapted into an Academy Awardwinning film by the same name. The Glenbrooks last produced this play more than 25 years ago. Additional staff includes: Daniel Ermel, music director; Andrea Cain, choreographer; Rich Winship, But that is when they will do their best for you. technical director; Aaron Kaplan, conductor; Barb and Lori Blohm, costumers; and Jim Shellard, producer. Tickets are $15 and will be available this spring. This spring, a new program, under Fuja’s direction, will aim to change that. Arts in the Community, a first-time free family art workshop, will be held on March 18. Designed and led by GBS AP Art students, the workshop will be geared towards local kindergarten through sixth graders. Aimed at supporting youth who are interested in art but may not have opportunities to engage with it, attendees can expect to try painting projects, drawing projects and sculpture projects. The servicelearning project will allow 15 AP Art students to bond with younger students about their interest in art and share projects they enjoyed as kids. “Hopefully this will allow a fun and free way for students in the community to explore a potential passion and grow their skills,” Fuja said. “We’re very excited to offer this opportunity and our students are thrilled to be able to give back something they love and enjoy.” Attendees will be grouped based on age and amount in attendance. Please send RSVPs to sfuja@glenbrook225.org by Jan. 20. “We hope as many kids as possible take advantage of this Art in the Community workshop,” Fuja said.
