Coach Talk
No way these will happen in the new year
Jon ‘Coach’ Cohn
Contributing Columnist
Glenview Resident
New Year’s resolutions.
Ah yes,
those wonderful
promises we make to ourselves
as we set in motion
our “goals and objectives”
for the coming year.
It all sounds good at
the time, but of course, as
history will sadly tell us,
rarely do our resolutions
stick.
So ... based on previous
years’ resolutions
and their success or lack
thereof, I am going to take
a different approach this
year.
I am going completely
au contraire. Reverse psychology
here folks.
For instance:
New Years resolution:
I am going to take up
a new winter sport this
year to force myself to
get out during the winter
months. Maybe a little
cross-country skiing at the
Glenview Golf Course.
Resolution likelihood? No
chance. The older I get the
more the cold gets into my
bones and overall epedermi.
My finger and toe
extremities are constantly
stuck on freezing. Only
way I am picking up a
new sport outdoors this
winter is if I am working
for a The Glenview Lantern
affiliate somewhere
in Florida.
New Years resolution:
I am going to finally take
that yoga class I have been
promising to try. No lack
of opportunities here in
Glenview, that’s for sure.
Bikram Yoga, Core Power,
Samachi Yoga, Evolution
Yoga, The Elite center and
the Park District just to
name a few. Yoga would
no doubt be a great addition
to my overall mental
and physical health. Now,
likelihood of resolution
coming to fruition? Slim
to none, with slim fading
fast. Sorry, yogateers, I
have found my karma by
taking the extended power
walk. Walking has become
my own personal “meditation,”
and it doesn’t cost
a cent.
New Years resolution:
Glenview finally gets a
second ice center. No
question we need one.
For more than 20 years I
have been hearing about a
potential build for a new
ice rink. There have been
almost as many ice-usage
studies and consulting
firm studies as have been
done with the “revitalizing
of downtown
Glenview.” Both, unfortunately,
have met with
the same lack of success.
Likelihood of resolution
happening? Two words:
Not happening. Past
history says so, but let
the record show I would
be happy to be proven
wrong.
New Years resolution:
Reacquaint myself with
the great game of golf.
So many wonderful golf
courses in and around
Glenview, including a
brand new Park District
course. Such a great
sport to keep playing in
your later life and a great
sport to keep your social
connections as well.
Likelihood of resolution
happening? No shot.
Who am I kidding?
Golf and me have had
a long-standing mutual
antagonism. The relationship
is not good for
either of us. We are both
better off going our separate
ways. Note: bonus of
resolution failing? Glenview
Park Golf Course
grounds keepers will
thank me for minimizing
their divot replacement
program.
Some other miscellaneous
bound to fail New
Years resolutions? Will
attend Loyola vs. Glenbrook
South boys or girls
basketball game (can’t
— they don’t play each
other), will join a paddle
tennis league, will not eat
late-night meals watching
taped sporting events,
and — maybe — finally
understand the rules and
strategy of lacrosse.
Final New Years Resolution:
Keep writing the
column for The Glenview
Lantern paper. Likelihood
of resolution happening?
From The Glenview
Lantern Editor: Until we
find someone better ...
(sarcasm) ... of course!
Well, maybe at least one
of the resolutions above
will be proved correct. I
will try my best to make it
happen.
Peace, health and all the
best for everyone in the
coming new year.
