Adventures in Glenview
Who it’s named after, Vol. II
Modern subdivision
names are
the worst, aren’t
they?
The Enclave at the
Grove. Landings at The
Glen. Tuscany Court. Tuscany
Court? Italy is 5,000
miles away, for crying out
loud.
So as an antidote to all
these gussied-up monikers,
let’s take a look at
some Glenview places
named for real, actual
people.
Judy Beck Park
When Judy Beck and
her husband moved to
Glenview from Washington,
D.C. in 1973,
he suggested she relax
and get to know the area
before jumping into
community activism.
Two weeks later, she was
standing in front of bulldozers
with women from
the Save the Grove Committee
to keep developers
from plowing under the
future National Historic
Site. Within a month,
she joined the League of
Women Voters.
So much for relaxing.
Over the next 30-odd
years, Judy helped make
Wagner Farm part of the
Glenview Park District,
fought developers over
the wetlands next to Abt
(creating West Park in
the process) and was a
founding member of the
Glenview Resource Commission.
She retired from
the Glenview Park District
Board in 2011 as its longest
serving member.
All of which deserved
a park name, the Village
thought.
Stroll through Judy
Beck Park, tucked between
the Kraft Research
Center and the Carriage
Hill neighborhood, and
you just may find Judy
herself planting an oak
tree or watching the river
go by.
Lyon School
I would guess 90
percent of all the kindergarteners
who attend this
school assume it is named
for a lion. And that someday
they will graduate
and go onto Tiger School.
Well, I’m sorry to disappoint
you, kids, but the
school is actually named
for Claude Lyon, the first
superintendent of District
34.
Back in the first half
of the 20th century,
there was a big red-brick
school building where
the old Village Hall is
now. With an overhanging
roof and an arched
doorway, it was the biggest
school in Glenview
and named, appropriately,
Glenview School.
(Today, some real estate
developer would probably
call it The Learnings
at Waukegan Road.)
Claude Lyon was the
principal. He also taught
gym, woodworking, reading,
arithmetic, photography
and leather craft. (I
don’t think they teach that
in grade school anymore.)
In the summers, he built
lockers and shelves for the
classrooms. In 1942, he
became superintendent,
no doubt saving him from
dropping dead of exhaustion.
Glenview School was
demolished in the early
‘70s. But Dr. Lyon lives
on just up the road.
Dewes Street
Back in 1836, a year
before Chicago was incorporated,
Robert Dewes
came from Yorkshire,
England, and bought 400
acres of land north of Golf
Road for $1.25 an acre.
It’s where all of Golf is
today, and I suspect Judy
Beck Park, too. He built a
log cabin on the property
and farmed the land for
several years.
After he died, his son
John sold 200 acres to The
Glen View Golf and Polo
Club. The golf club is
still there, of course, and
amazingly so is the log
cabin. It sits off the 17th
fairway. There’s a small
Dewes cemetery with
about six or seven stones,
too.
Maybe it’s where errant
shots go to die.
Over the years,
I’ve spent lots of
time on baseball
fields. Practicing. Playing.
Coaching.
So it makes sense that
approximately 17 years
ago I met Anne DuBray
— on a baseball field.
Her son Michael and
our son Chad played on
the same Glenview Youth
Baseball team.
As one of the coaches, it
was a kick for me to work
with the boys, as well as
meet the parents.
I always remember
Anne being involved,
supportive and enthusiastic.
Those attributes
have also contributed to
her successful real estate
career. She has been both
the No. 1 agent in Glenview
(2013, 2014 and
2015) and the No. 1 agent
on the North Shore (2013
and 2015).
Our conversation has
been edited for length and
clarity:
Jeff Blackman: How would
you describe your real
estate career?
Anne DuBray: Awesome.
I’ve met so many
people and helped them
find or sell their homes.
Real estate isn’t a business,
it’s a lifestyle.
JB: What have been the
keys to your success?
AD: Lots of hard work
and honesty. I’ve also
invested a lot of marketing
dollars to create my brand:
“The Anne Advantage.” I
did real estate by myself
for 15 years. To grow, I
surrounded myself with a
great team. My best decision,
other than marrying
Sam, was hiring Eileen
Cullum as my Buyer’s
Agent. She’s the best.
JB: What’s something
unique folks don’t know
about you?
AD: I blast the radio and
sing oldies when I’m alone
in the car. I love so many
songs, but especially Billy
Joel’s Piano Man. It brings
back so many memories.
JB: What impact has
The Glen had upon
your business and our
community?
AD: It has been a great
addition. A lot of “city
buyers” now start looking
in Glenview because of
The Glen.
JB: How is Glenview
perceived?
AD: We seem to be
the first choice for many
buyers. They used to
start looking in Wilmette
and Winnetka. Glenview
became their compromise.
That has changed. Buyers
now often gravitate to
Glenview first.
JB: When you’re selling
our community, what do
you stress?
AD: People make the
party. Glenview is a great
community to raise a
family. It has top-notch
schools, parks and most
importantly, people.
JB: Your son, Michael, now
works with you. What are
the most important lessons
you’re teaching him?
AD: Never compromise
your integrity for anyone.
Always treat other realtors
with respect. You never
know when you’ll need
them.
JB: What are the key
things every buyer must
know?
AD: Time is of the essence.
Sellers aren’t here to
rebuild their house for you.
JB: What are the key
things every seller must
know?
AD: Price right. Don’t
miss a showing.
JB: When you’re not
selling real estate, what
are your other interests?
AD: Family, friends,
travel, our lake house,
walking, tennis, reading
and shopping.
JB: What’s the funniest
or strangest thing you’ve
ever seen when entering a
home?
AD: You’ll have to read
that in my real estate book.
