SALAMANCA lionfish, the Turks & Caicos Reef Fund (TCRF) worked with the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) and the Department of Culture and Heritage to organize the 1st Annual TCI Lionfish Festival. The festival, held on October 29, 2016 on Providenciales and on November 5, 2016 on Grand Turk and South Caicos, was kicked off early in the day with a lionfish derby. Five teams from Provo, seven from Grand Turk and three from South Caicos participated in the two derbies. Lionfish derbies are organized culling events—teams of up to four people go out and catch as many lionfish as they can and bring them to the judging station at the festival. Then, every lionfish brought in is measured and counted. The teams bringing in the biggest, the smallest (based on length) and the most lionfish were awarded cash prizes and trophies. Second and third place finishers received a smaller cash prize and a plaque. Over $3,500 in cash and prizes were awarded at each of the two derbies. On Provo, a total of 85 lionfish were caught; on Grand Turk and South Caicos, 190 fish were caught. Winners in each category for the two derbies are shown in the table on the opposite page. But the lionfish derbies were only the kick-off event. As the boats were coming into the docks for judging, the public was treated to live music, a rake and scrape competition, lionfish cooking demonstrations by several local restaurateurs, games for the kids, scientific demonstrations about lionfish and many other activities. The objective of the festival was to raise awareness of the lionfish problem, introduce people to the tasty nature of lionfish and to encourage restaurants to ask their local fishers to start supplying them with lionfish on a regular basis. Science has shown that frequent culling of lionfish can control the population and protect the other commercially important fish stocks.
