Brow
wow!
strapline right xxxx
Perfectly groomed brows can be yours
with these handy tips and tricks, says
Beauty Editor Michelle Nightingale
3 STEPS TO
SUCCESS
1
Brush your brows through using
a spoolie brush – a brush that
looks like a mascara wand. To find
your perfect brow shape, hold a
pencil or a make-up brush vertically
from the side of your nose. This
marks where your brow should start.
Next hold your pencil or brush from
the corner of your nose to the outer
corner of your eye. This is where your
brow should end.
Once you know where your
2 brows should start and end, use
this as a guide and very lightly draw
your shape with a brow pencil. The
trick is to keep your brows looking
natural so use light pencil strokes
and then, once filled, brush through
again to soften any harsh lines. Fill in
any remaining gaps or sparse areas
with the pencil or a brow powder.
Tweeze away any stray hairs.
Finally, comb through a brow gel
3 or wax. If you think your brows
need a bit more colour or still appear
sparse then choose a tinted product,
otherwise a clear product will do the
job. This will help set the pencil or
powder and will help keep unruly
hairs in place.
Cleansing
power
Spend a little more time on your cleansing routine and your
skin will thank you, says Beauty Editor Michelle Nightingale
Most of us are
guilty of putting
little thought
into the way we
cleanse our skin
– sometimes a quick face wipe is
all the effort we can muster. But,
this quick-cleanse habit could be
doing your skin a real disservice.
“Cleansing your skin should be
the most important part of your
star chat
Our Bill’s a busy bee!
By Katharine Wootton
When Bill
Turnbull
said an
emotional
goodbye to
BBC Breakfast last February,
many people thought that,
at aged 60, he was retiring
to spend more time with his
beloved bees.
And after 15 years of
3.30am starts to go wake up
the nation with the news,
none of us would have
begrudged him the chance
to put his feet up and enjoy
a well-earned retirement
pursuing his passion for
beekeeping. But a quiet,
sedentary retirement,
pottering round in his
beekeeper’s hat couldn’t be
further from the reality of
Bill Turnbull’s life almost one
With TV quiz Think Tank to host, a classical album
and a regular radio show, Bill Turnbull’s barely had
a moment to miss life on the BBC Breakfast sofa
year on from his last stint on
the Breakfast sofa.
“I didn’t want to retire at
60. That’s much too young!”
says an incredulous Bill.
“I was just changing jobs.
“I’d had it in mind to leave
BBC Breakfast for some time
and then when I got to 60
and had been doing it for 15
years I felt they were nice,
clean numbers to finish
off on. And better to go
while people want you to
stay rather than the other
way round.
“Knowing what I know
now, however, I think it
might have been better to
stay another year. When I
left, the news had been quiet
for so long I thought, ‘oh I’m
not going to miss much’ and
then so much happened
such as Brexit, the Labour
Party leadership contest and
the US election which I did
miss covering.
“Still, I have no regrets
and I certainly haven’t
missed getting out of bed
at the crack of dawn.”
And while we’ve
definitely missed his chirpy,
charming face filling us in on
current affairs while we tuck
into our morning porridge,
we’re so pleased that he
hasn’t disappeared from our
lives altogether.
Bill with the cast of his
quiz show Think Tank,
which is back for a new
series in the spring
There’s his weekend slot
on Classic FM, a recently
released CD, Bill Turnbull’s
Relaxing Classics packed
with his favourite tunes,
then there’s the quiz show
Think Tank he hosts which
has just finished a second
series on BBC1 and looks set
to return with another series
in spring.
There’s also his new
Think Tank book on the
shelves that allows people to
play their own version of the
game at home.
‘It was better to
go while people
wanted you to stay
rather than the
other way round’
“I was delighted to be
offered the chance to do a
quiz show as I’d had that in
mind for some time and I
like that Think Tank’s found
a quiz show format that’s
interesting and different.”
For anyone who’s not
tuned into the show before,
Think Tank sees contestants
answer questions with
the help of a regular cast
of contributors, called The
Think Tank, who offer
their own ideas for what the
answers might be, only some
of which may be correct.
“We have a lot of banter
and fun on the show, in fact
so much so that I do often
have to remind myself that
there is a quiz going on
and we need to be getting
on with it.
“It’s a whole new world
compared to working on BBC
Breakfast. Yes, it takes a bit of
concentration but it’s not at
all serious. After 35 years as
a journalist I think I’ve more
than had my fair share of
‘There’s so
much to learn
about beekeeping’
adrenaline, so this is a nice
break from that.”
But with such a busy
schedule, just how does he
find time to look after his
precious bees? After
all, when Bill left Breakfast
TV, the papers were full of
Bill pictured on
the BBC Breakfast
sofa with presenter
Susanna Reid in 2006
the news that he’d quit in
order to devote more time
to his hive. “I’m actually
a bit embarrassed,” says
Bill sheepishly, “because
the bees are still in
Buckinghamshire and we’ve
now moved to Suffolk.
Unfortunately I didn’t have
time over the summer to
go pick them up and it got a
lot more complicated than I
thought when I found out I
had two colonies rather than
one! For now I’ve prepared
them for winter and they’ll
look after themselves.
Then in spring I’ll bring
them up here.”
Bees have been a passion
for Bill for many years
now. “There’s so much to
learn about beekeeping
and they’re such beautiful,
fascinating, intricate
creatures. You get such a
zen-like calm going through
a hive. Sweaty but relaxing.”
In fact, he loves the buzz
of keeping bees so much
he’d love to write a film
script all about them,
following on from the
success of his 2011
book Confessions of a
Bad Beekeeper.
“I’ve had a film
screenplay idea in
mind for years – it’s a
brilliant story about a
beekeeper which I’d love to
get together at some point.
But I need time for my
ideas to bubble up from the
bottom of my mind and
recently I haven’t had much
time to sit still.”
n Think Tank, published by
Hamlyn, is out now, rrp £14.99
Birdwatchers of all ages can take
part in spotting birds, but can
Watch the birdie!
Help to take care of our feathered
friends by joining the RSPB’s Big
Garden Birdwatch this month
By Katharine Wootton
Notepads and
pens at the
ready! It’s that
time of year
again when
the RSPB calls on wildlife
lovers across the UK to lend
conservation a hand by
jotting down sightings of the
birds in our back gardens.
Now in its 38th year,
the Big Garden Birdwatch
provides an invaluable
snapshot of the state of our
wildlife. You can do your bit
to contribute to this crucial
conservation work by
simply settling down with
a mug of tea (wrapped up
warm if you are doing this
outside), and note down
any wildlife that swoops,
hops or even walks into
your garden or local
park in just one hour on
January 28, 29 or 30.
You don’t need any fancy
equipment – just your eyes,
ears, notepad and a copy
of the RSPB’s Birdwatch
pack to help you identify
the species. And it’s not
just birds you need to look
out for – the RSPB would
like to know about any
other creatures, such as
hedgehogs, foxes or toads
you spot to get a broader
picture of how our wildlife
is faring.
Not only is this a chance
to get outside and enjoy the
beauty of nature on your
own doorstep, you can also
enjoy the nice warm feeling
that comes from knowing
you’re helping to protect our
wildlife for posterity.
Garden Birdwatch pack, call
DID YOU KNOW? The
Royal Society for the
Protection of Birds
started life in 1889 as The
Plumage League, formed
by ladies who objected to
the trade that destroyed
thousands of egrets, birds
of paradise and other
species for hat feathers
n How does it help?
Noting the birds that pass by your
small patch in the space of an hour
might not seem like a big deal, but
when added together with the
sightings of around half a million
people also taking part it creates an
amazing picture of our natural world.
This information can be a real gamechanger
for conservationists who are
trying to work out how to support
our wildlife.
Richard explains: “Gardens cover
an estimated ten million acres in the
UK – that’s equivalent to five million
football pitches and a space much
bigger than all of the country’s nature
reserves combined.
The RSPB pack has
a guide to help
you identify birds
such as the wren
n What are we hoping to see?
In last year’s Birdwatch a whopping 8,262,662 birds
were counted. It showed house sparrows were the most
commonly seen bird in the UK with starlings coming a
close second. Richard Bashford, the RSPB projects manager
who oversees the Big Garden Birdwatch, explained that
this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be worried about house
sparrows because in fact their numbers have dropped
dramatically in recent years, as have those of turtle doves
and song thrushes.
He says: “There is
a real concern that
turtle doves might
disappear as a British
breeding species as
“It would of course be impossible
for professional naturalists to
monitor such a huge area so the
Big Garden Birdwatch is brilliant in
giving us this exact information.
“For conservationists, it’s not just
the number of birds that matter, but
which birds are going up in number
and which species are declining. For
“There is a real concern
that turtle doves might
disappear as a British
breeding species”
there has been an estimated decline of over 95 per cent
since 1967. When we started the Big Garden Birdwatch in
1979, song thrushes were in the top ten most common birds
in the UK, then they dropped out of the top ten in 1980 and
slid further down to their current position of 29th.
“Big Garden Birdwatch was one of the first surveys to
identify the decline and research was undertaken to try
to find the reason. It will be interesting to see in this year’s
Birdwatch whether these bird populations
have changed. We’re also keen to see if there
are any surprises. Last year’s Birdwatch
surprisingly saw more sightings than ever of
one of Britain’s smallest birds, the goldcrest,
while the long-tailed tit made an appearance
in the top ten for the first time.”
Aside from birds, it will be fascinating to
find out if grey squirrels remain our most
popular garden visitor. Red squirrels were
seen by only three per cent.
Bird quiz answers: 1 Female Chaffinch
2 Coal tit 3 Goldfinch 4 Great tit
5 Male Chaffinch 6 Greenfinch
example, there are far more house
sparrows in the country than mute
swans, but house sparrows are on the
red list as a species of conservation
concern because numbers have
dropped by 68 per cent, while mute
swans rates haven’t really changed.
“Bird surveys help us identify
these trends. Once we see a species
which is causing concern, we can
look into why the numbers are in
decline and ask for research grants
and subsidies for farmers to help
tackle this.
“The Big Garden Birdwatch helps
conservationists prioritise their work
so the RSPB knows where best to
focus its attention for the future.”
