Community Pictures for health For over a decade Arts for Health (Milton Keynes) has used the arts and creativity to improve health and wellbeing for local people. The idea originated with the voluntary Hospital Arts Committee, who had a vision to develop an art collection at the hospital to distract patients from their health pains and worries. The Arts for Health projects now work with health, community and corporate clients across Milton Keynes to manage and deliver art projects, artist-in-residence schemes and art-inhospital programmes. They introduce exciting new artwork and cultural experiences to healthcare settings and the wider local community. There are currently 390 artworks on display in the hospital, as well as a programme of temporary exhibitions. Arts on Prescription programme Help the Deanshanger Helpers Every Thursday a friendly team of volunteers get to work to support senior members from the local communities of Deanshanger, Potterspury and Wicken. As the community centre opens its doors at 9.00am to welcome the members, the team will have already started the process of cleaning, preparing food and setting up. A warm meal and the opportunity to take part in various activities – or just chat with others – is possibly the only social contact many of the members will have all week. Many of the volunteers at Deanshanger Community Centre are aged over 70 years themselves, yet every summer they take their members on a coach trip to an interesting place and include a meal. They also organise fundraising events at Easter and Christmas. Now they need your help. Could you spare a few hours to: • Help prepare and cook food • Put out tables and chairs in the morning and clear them away at 2.30pm • Help with fund-raising events • Support the less mobile members/wheelchair users when going on trips? If you can give your time – even just an hour or two – please get in touch with Smallwood on offers free art workshops on referral to people who experience stress, anxiety or depression. Over 200 people have benefitted, with improvements to their health and personal and mental wellbeing, particularly confidence, engagement in outside activities and art. Wolverton-based artist Gabrielle Radiguet has worked with the groups and has now been invited to show her works. From April until the end of September, ten large, semi-abstract, atmospheric landscape paintings and 12 cyantype prints will be on display. There will be sculptural features, highlight performances and gravity-defying tricks. You are invited to take part in building the line and promoting the event. You will receive a Dominoes T-shirt and backpack, a packed lunch and drinks as well as be part of a celebratory thank you party at the end.
