Rules of Etiquette 

The right and wrongs of good social behaviour 

The English have a history of appropriate social 

behaviour which is renowned across the world, 

The word etiquette originates from the French 

in 1750. The modern understanding of the 

word can be linked to the Court of the French 

King Louis XIV, who used small cards called 

etiquettes, as a reminder to courtiers of 

accepted ‘house rules’ and how to behave 

properly at court. Rules of etiquette are usually 

unwritten and passed down from generation to 

generation, although in days gone by it was 

common for young ladies to attend a finishing 

school to ensure their manners were up to 

scratch. An attribute which was felt particularly 

crucial in securing a suitable husband! Whilst 

today good manners and etiquette are seen as 

a sign of respect, particularly to those more 

senior (in either age or position), in Victorian 

England when the class system was alive and 

well, etiquette was often used as a social 

weapon in the interests of social advancement 

or exclusion. 

The RSVP 

RSVP is an acronym of the French phrase, 

"Respondez s'il vous plait," or "Respond, if you 

please." When your receive an invitation to any 

social engagement you should always reply as 

soon as possible. This allows the host to 

accommodate all guests in regards to food, 

drink, seating and give some idea of the 

amount of people attending. Never leave it too 

late to reply and if you loose the invitation to 

RSVP to, try to get in contact in other ways so 

they know if you’re attending or not. 

Place Settings 

Setting a table is not as difficult as it seems. 

The basic rule is: Utensils are placed in the 

order of use; that is, from the outside in. A

second rule, with only a few exceptions, is: 

Forks go to the left of the plate, and knives and 

spoons go to the right. And finally, only set the 

table with utensils you will 

use. No soup; no soup 

spoon. It is polite to wait 

until your hostess is seated 

before you start eating. 

Thank-You Cards 

Sending out a thank you 

card is a great way to 

reinforce your gratitude. Maybe someone has 

helped out with a problem or just simply been 

there when you needed them. It’s not always 

possible to say thank you for a gift straight 

away, especially birthdays and Christmas. Make

THE READING ROOMS 

The Reading Rooms 

were founded in 1864 by 

a group of local 

businessmen and 

shopkeepers, as a 

literary institution to 

help educate the 

working classes. 

Periodicals, newspapers 

and books were 

purchased and placed in 

the rooms for perusal by 

all. In the 1860s 

newspapers ranged from 

1d (one old penny) per 

issue, however with a labourer earning 

£36.04d, policeman £53.94d, per year, one 

old penny was a huge amount of money. 

The current building was built in 1886 by 

public subscription. In the 1930s, the Rooms 

were mainly for recreation, with a billiard 

hall, darts and similar pastimes. The 

Billericay Rotary Club in 1961 reported that, 

the Rooms should be more widely available 

for the benefit of Billericay residents. 

A new enthusiastic committee was formed 

consisting of local professional people and 

other interested residents and 

organisations. In 1965 the Rooms were 

registered as a charity, and following grants 

a kitchen, toilets and storeroom were 

installed. In 2005 a further major grant was 

received from Essex Environment Trust to 

upgrade the 19th century building yet 

again, but retaining as much as possible of 

the original features. 

Over the last few years the trustees have 

built up a close involvement with 4 local 

junior schools and 

with their 

involvement, a 

successful 

exhibition was held 

in the Rooms to 

celebrate the 150th 

anniversary in 2014. 

In 2015 with a further exhibition, 

commemorating the involvement of 

Billericay people in WW1. In 2016 the same 

schools helped design a logo for the Rooms. 

The current management committee is still 

made up of local people, organisations and 

fund raising groups, who are dedicated to 

keeping the Rooms open and available for 

local residents of Billericay to use and enjoy. 

The main hall, kitchen and committee room 

are now used by a wide variety of people 

and organisations.
