The hedge has been growing for some three to four years now and has not had a chance to reach the stage where blossom could form and produce a crop of berries. These berries are needed for our small mammals and birds to eat during the winter months and the flowers for our insects, butterflies and moths to collect and pollinate. Recently I passed by this considerable length of new hedgerow, which is now about a metre in height. I saw that the whole hedge from start to finish has been flailed mercilessly, smashed to pieces, all prospects of any green new buds obliterated and scattered on the grass verge in mounds of shredded growth. The shards of hawthorn contain quite a few thorns and indirectly must be responsible for damage to tyre walls, particularly on bicycle and motorcycle wheels. But who cares? Who directs the Welton NEWS farmers and contractors to cause this annual mayhem? Why cannot the hedges be left to grow and create an environment for wildlife? No doubt the hedgerow owner who had all the subsidies to rip out the old hedge, plant the monoculture new hedge and flail the new hedge to bits will soon get another subsidy for being a member of the Wildlife Stewardship Scheme. All I ask is why? P.S. my resolution not to get all wound up about the destruction of our hedgerows and the decimation of our wildlife didn’t last very long, did it?
