conducting rods (metal rods), one in each hand, between
which an electric voltage will be applied. The voltage will
be increased step by step starting from zero and displayed
in red on the wall in front. The purpose was to see how
much electric shock each one can withstand and whether
the minimum voltage giving a shock has any correlation
with the factors mentioned above. (namely, gender, age
and body structure). Each person on whom the
experiment was to be carried out was warned to keep in
mind that the voltage will be increased and thus to take
care not taking any risk.
Everyone at one voltage or another was found to drop the
metal rods, saying, "I cannot tolerate any more." But no
voltage was applied at all; yet everyone received an
'electric shock'! The fictitious 'shocking voltage", as
displayed on the wall, was furthermore found not to have
any correlation with the factors as mentioned above.
The conclusion one can arrive at from the experiment is
that no numerical value can be assigned to a
Psychological quantity, pain in the present case. By its
very nature, Psychology is a qualitative science. The
some statement can be made about other science subjects
that are qualitative by nature. We should not undermine
these science subjects. These are of no less importance to
science and to the society.
