Who are we? 

The UKCPA is a not-for-profit organisation which 

provides high quality education, training and 

development and peer support for the pharmacy 

workforce. 

We provide ongoing peer support and networking 

opportunities through our online networks and our 

face-to-face training days.

We are accredited by the Royal Pharmaceutical 

Society as a Foundation Training Provider and a 

Faculty Training Provider. 

All our education programmes are designed by 

practitioners and clinical content is delivered by expert 

practitioner speakers. 

We develop curricula for the pharmacy profession and 

are assessors for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society 

Faculty. 

Our members are sought as national and international 

experts, providing advice to government, the Royal 

Pharmaceutical Society, Royal Colleges, health 

professions, and various national and international 

organisations. 

We provide support and recognition for innovative 

practice and research through our awards and 

conference poster presentations. 

We invest all our surplus back into the association in 

order to provide services and benefits for our 

members. 

All our members have the opportunity to become 

involved in all that we do via the education group 

committees, the overarching General Committee and 

project working groups. 

The UKCPA promotes expert practice in 

medicines management for the benefit of 

patients, the public and members by 

establishing standards, workforce development 

and advancing innovation in all health care 

settings.

delivers educational events, coordinates and responds 

to national consultations and the media, engages in 

leadership activities and is involved in many other 

elements of expertise sharing.

Education and training 

In 2016 we delivered over 200 hours of training to 

over 1400 practitioners 

Masterclasses 

Clinical Pharmacy Training Day 

More than 600 practitioners attended our 

masterclasses in 2016. We ran 15 masterclass 

events in locations including London, 

Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh, plus a 

two day Introduction to Pharmaceutical Care 

course aimed at Foundation level practitioners. 

For the first time in 2016 we delivered a clinical 

training day featuring four concurrent 

workstreams which allowed practitioners to 

choose from 20 interactive workshops to suit 

their scope of practice and learning needs. 

One hundred percent of delegates who 

completed the feedback told us that it was value 

for money.

Conference 

In November 2016 we focussed our conference on 

delivering training in core skills that all pharmacists 

need, regardless of sector or area of practice, in order 

to practice effectively. This included leadership, 

management, research, education, communication 

and relationship building. 

We welcomed over 200 delegates who attended 

interactive workshops and keynote talks delivered by 

thirty expert speakers. We also saw over 70 posters 

and presented fifteen awards.

Working together 

Pharmacy Management 

Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education 

In May 2016 we embarked on a new partnership with 

Pharmacy Management to deliver a Diabetes 

Medicines Optimisation learning event in 

Manchester. 

The event was so successful, attracting over 200 

practitioners from all over the UK and in all sectors of 

practice, that we ran it again in London later in the 

year. We are looking forward to a Respiratory 

Medicines Optimisation learning event in February 

2017. 

During the last quarter of 2016 the UKCPA Diabetes & 

Endocrinology Group, in partnership with the Primary 

Care Pharmacy Association, developed and delivered 

four workshops for the CPPE General Practice 

Pharmacist Training Pathway. The UKCPA Cardiology 

Group is running six workshops for the same training 

pathway during 2017. 

Primary Care Pharmacy Association 

Clinical Pharmacy Congress 

Fourteen UKCPA speakers delivered expert talks at 

the Clinical Pharmacy Congress in London in April 

2016. 

In December 2016 we partnered again with the 

Primary Care Pharmacy Association and the Royal 

Pharmaceutical Society to deliver a prescribing event 

which opened up discussions around the 

opportunities for prescribers in community, primary 

and secondary care and how to overcome the 

barriers to prescribing.

Membership 

More members than ever in 2016. 

As of 5 December 2016, our membership stood at 

over 2800. 

We have seen almost a 50 percent increase in 

membership over the past decade. However, we 

would like to see more practitioners join our 

community, from all sectors of the pharmacy 

workforce, and we are putting plans in place which 

should help us achieve this.

functionality and the user 

experience and improve the

Leadership 

UKCPA and its members are recognised leaders 

within the pharmacy profession 

Accreditation: the assurance of quality 

In April 2016 we received double accreditation from 

the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, the first 

organisation to do so. We are now accredited by the 

RPS as a Foundation Training Provider and a Faculty 

Training Provider. This means that the RPS have, via 

an independent assessment panel, quality assured 

our education and training events, our internal 

quality assurance systems, and our governance 

processes. 

The accreditation assures all practitioners that our 

education events are of the highest quality and are 

delivered by credible expert speakers and tutors. 

Providing expertise 

A particular highlight of our year was the 

development and publication of the Handbook of 

Peri-operative Medicines. 

Compiled by UKCPA members who specialise in the 

area of surgery, the Handbook provides national 

guidance for the use of medicines in the 

perioperative period. Previously, only local guidelines 

existed which resulted in varying practices across the 

country, and confusion and ambiguity amongst 

healthcare professionals. 

The Handbook of Peri-operative Medicines is available 

from the UKCPA office.

Lifetime Achievement Awards 

In 2016 we were delighted to present our Lifetime 

Achievement Award to two outstanding clinical 

pharmacy pioneers. 

For over thirty years Professor Mike Scott (pictured 

below, with Ann Page, UKCPA Chair) has worked both 

as a hospital pharmacist and researcher, publishing 

extensively as well as supervising MSc and PhD 

students. 

He has been a pioneer in providing a robust evidence 

base for developing clinical pharmacy services, not 

only in his home of Northern Ireland, but nationally 

and internationally. 

He is known for his relentless energy and passion for 

developing clinical pharmacy and his work has been 

central in influencing the development of medicines 

management and clinical pharmacy services across 

the UK and Europe. 

A previous Chair of UKCPA, Duncan McRobbie 

(pictured above, with Ann Page, UKCPA Chair) has 

been described as an innovator, a clinician and a role 

model. 

He has impacted on clinical pharmacy services locally, 

establishing the residency service at Guy’s & St 

Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, which grew into the 

STEP programme, and introducing the preregistration 

OSCE system in the South East region. 

His national influence is demonstrated through his 

being a founder member of CoDeG, the group which 

developed the competency frameworks that are now 

the foundation of the RPS professional recognition 

structure at both Foundation and Faculty level. 

Individually, he is described as an inspirational clinical 

practitioner, and is greatly respected for his work 

within the GSTT cardiology team, always putting the 

patient at the centre of care, and supporting his 

colleagues to achieve their potential through good 

humour and the need for work-life balance.

Member benefits 

Peer support and advice 

Our online forums are viewed as the most valuable 

member benefit and professional support and 

development resource by many of our members. 

Whilst our educational events provide face to face 

networking and support, the forums on the website 

allow members to continue to access that 

professional expertise and support throughout the 

year, wherever they are located geographically. 

During 2016 we have been working to identify 

improvements to the forums and members will be 

able to see these during 2017.

We continue to offer awards as a member benefit. 

These include therapeutic focussed awards, 

conference abstract awards, poster awards and our 

prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. We are 

proud to have recognised so many inspiring and 

excellent practitioners this year. 

Abstract feedback 

UKCPA member 

We have continued to provide detailed constructive 

feedback on abstracts submitted to our conference 

by members. This peer review helps our members to 

improve their writing and research skills and increase 

their chances of presentation and publication.

Research support 

UKCPA member 

We continued our partnership with Pharmacy 

Research UK in 2016 to enable UKCPA members to 

apply for our Clinical Pharmacy Research Grant. This 

year we were delighted to award two grants. 

Andrew Sturrock, Senior Lecturer in Pharmacy 

Practice and Clinical Therapeutics at the University of 

Sunderland, will be investigating the perceptions of 

patients towards the prevention of osteonecrosis of 

the jaw, a rare but unpleasant and preventable 

consequence of using bisphosphonates. 

Daniel Greenwood, a PhD student in Pharmacy and 

Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of 

Manchester, will be looking the activities undertaken 

by pharmacists with enhanced clinical skills in the 

emergency department and what this means for 

patient care. 

Ann Page, Chair of UKCPA, said, "It is important to 

prevent osteonecrosis of the jaw and this project 

should result in better patient care for those taking 

bisphosphonate. We also look forward to seeing the 

evidence around the impact that A&E pharmacists 

can make in emergency care.” 

This concludes our three year research grant 

programme, but we will continue to offer research 

support through our annual conference workshops. 



Communications 

Social media 

Our social media presence continues to grow year on 

year. We now have over 4800 Facebook followers, a 

significant minority of whom are from overseas 

countries, an indication that the Association has more 

than a UK reach. 

Twitter is an increasingly popular way for pharmacy 

and other health care professionals and organisations 

to communicate with each other. Our Twitter 

followers now number over 2800 and many of our 

education groups now have active Twitter accounts 

which enable them to disseminate their activity to 

the wider world. Our account is particularly active 

during our conferences (see right). 

Our LinkedIn group allows professionals to connect 

with each other and find like-minded peers. We now 

have almost 900 members on this platform.

We continue to publish our quarterly newsletter, In 

Practice, which provides news from the Association 

and its education groups. In a recent member survey, 

In Practice was the third most read pharmacy 

publication after the Pharmaceutical Journal and 

Clinical Pharmacist.

Our e-bulletin In Focus is also released quarterly and 

provides a more individual perspective with an 

emphasis on celebrating the amazing achievements 

of our members. In Focus is now available to our 

subscribers (potential members who would like to 

keep in touch with us) as part of a Subscriber Pack 

which is sent out every four months. 



What’s next? 

During 2016 we reflected on our achievements, but we also started to shape our vision for the future. 

Market research during 2015 enabled us to start planning for our future, and scoping out what we might have to 

do in order to achieve our vision. Over the next 12 months we hope to see development in two key areas of the 

association. 

Website and online services 

During 2016 we invested significant time in evaluating 

our online presence and services and putting into 

action some plans which would improve this area of 

the association. 

We are excited about our new website which we look 

forward to showing you in the first half of 2017. 

Closely following this, we will be launching improved 

online forums to enable you to stay connected 

wherever you are. In addition, in the second half of 

2017 you will be able to renew your membership 

subscription and book yourself into educational 

events via the website. 

The next phase will be the implementation of a 

backend administration system which will allow the 

UKCPA office to process your membership and event 

bookings more easily and quickly. 

National Training Programmes 

In November 2016 the UKCPA, along with other RPS 

affiliated partners, unveiled their plans to design and 

deliver National Training Programmes to all sectors of 

the pharmacy profession. 

The RPS Affiliated Partners National Training 

Programmes will provide pharmacists with clinicallyoriented 

structured, accredited, expert training. 

Pharmacists will be able to pick training in a variety of 

topics to broaden their knowledge, or focus on a 

particular area so they are equipped to provide 

excellent clinical care to patients and the public, 

regardless of where they are situated. 

These programmes are being developed to support 

all post-foundation pharmacists, addressing 

pharmacy clinical training needs through to advanced 

levels of career development. 

The training programmes will consist of components 

that can be chosen to suit an individual’s scope or 

level of practice. Face-to-face training days will be 

supported by self-directed learning and support 

resources, both before and after the event. A practice 

experience element will also be added once the 

programmes are established, where employers will 

provide accredited training placements.

It’s been a year of both 

reflection and looking to the 

future for UKCPA in 2016. 

Not only have we continued 

to provide outstanding 

educational events and 

member services, but we 

have been thinking about a 

bigger vision too. 

communication, mentoring, leadership, 

management and research skills. 

The launch of the Handbook of Perioperative 

Medicines: the culmination of a few UKCPA 

members who identified a need and rounded up 

the troops to do something about it. Sharing 

expertise, collaboration, a passion for the 

profession and a commitment to patient care is all 

demonstrated here. 

Much of 2016 was spent planning this vision and the 

steps we need to take towards achieving it. We will 

continue doing this in 2017, but we also hope to show 

you some outcomes of those plans. 

Here are some of my highlights from the year, and 

what I’m most looking forward to in 2017. 

Highlights from 2016 

We successfully achieved double accreditation 

from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. We are 

proud to be an RPS-accredited Foundation Training 

Provider and Faculty Training Provider. 

We supported more UKCPA leaders to become RPS 

Faculty Assessors and have continued to support 

practitioners to start their Faculty journey through 

conference workshops and one-to-one case 

discussions. 

We delivered a successful inaugural event, the 

Clinical Pharmacy Training Day in November 2016, 

which provided a programme of clinical content 

which practitioners were able to tailor to their own 

learning needs. 

Our new conference format was a great success. In 

2016 we focussed on the core skills that every 

practitioner requires to practice effectively, such as

The launch of our new website and improved 

online forums during 2017. 

Refining and repeating the Clinical Pharmacy 

Training Day and the new annual conference 

format in 2017. 

The continued development of our plans to provide 

National Training Programmes for career pathways, 

linked to professional knowledge bases, and 

providing credentials for completing elements of 

those programmes. 

More partnership working which benefits 

practitioners in their professional development. 

The UKCPA continues to be at the forefront of all 

things clinical pharmacy, but in this time of constant 

flux we need to keep on our toes to ensure that our 

members and the pharmacy profession continues to 

be supported.

Trustees’ report 

The Trustees have two main areas of 

responsibility. Firstly they are responsible for 

the permanent staff and the assets of the 

association. They support the General Manager 

with the management of the permanent staff, 

and the office. 

This year the office workload has been 

particularly high, and the Trustees are very 

grateful for the continuing excellent hard work 

of the General Manager, General Secretary and 

all the permanent staff. 

We continue to promote the UKCPA to external 

organisations and play a role in discussions on 

collaborative ventures and areas of mutual 

concern. 

We are approaching a time when some of the 

Trustees will come to the end of their terms of 

office. If anyone is interested in joining the 

Trustees, or has any questions relating to our 

activities, please feel free to contact us. 

Trustees: 

Secondly, we have an advisory and supporting 

role, and provide continuity to those elected to 

the associations committees. We have 

continued to work closely with the General 

Committee and the Business Management 

Group, maintaining an oversight which ensures 

that the assets of the association are preserved 

and providing advice and opinion when 

required. 

We have been involved in the discussions 

around the proposed future role and 

organisation of the association, and are fully 

supportive of these proposals, discussed in 

detail elsewhere in the Annual Report.

Expert Professional Practice & Collaborative Working Relationships 

Attendance (as UKCPA representative) at the “Working together for Older People: National collaborative learning event” 

on 8th December 2015 in London 

Christina Short will be representing the UKCPA on the Royal College of Physician’s Falls and Fragility Fracture Audit 

Programme. 

Leadership 

Group input into the consultation on the RPS Faculty Practice Based Assessment requirements 

Annual Review of previously-released Professional Curriculum for Advanced Practice in Care of Older People – this 

document continues to be endorsed by the British Geriatrics Society. 

Education, Training & Development 

Since the date of the last annual report, the Group has run a masterclass entitled “Medicines Optimisation across the 

Interface” at the RPS in London on 20 th September 2016. This was attended by 32 delegates. On-the-day feedback was 

very positive with lots of delegate interaction throughout the meeting. 

Research & Evaluation 

Acting as a reviewer for a UKCPA-PRUK Clinical Pharmacy Research Grant application 

The Group has contributed to all recent editions of In Practice 

Reviewer of elderly care research for Pharmaceutical Journal articles 

Group funds 

The income generated from this year’s Masterclass has not been used on any extra activities.

Have you met your aims and objectives set last year? 

Our objectives with regards to improving the uptake of our educational events and increasing active networking have 

progressed well. Evidence for this includes the attendance at masterclasses and increased membership and usage of the 

website network. 

Progress has been slow with regards to improving links with regional older person pharmacy networks and other 

professional bodies and in our timely response to national consultation documents. These roles need to be more formally 

delegated with the Group Committee but the recent expansion in the size of our committee will help to facilitate this. 

Aims and objectives for next 12 months 

To organise at least one masterclass or workshop during 2017. 

To be an integral part of the proposed UK-wide strategy group for older people pharmacy services. 

To develop more regular, alternative educational formats for our members e.g. workshops and webinars. 

To reinstate regular face-to-face committee meetings. 

To implement a more structured committee system for responding to national consultation documents. 

Reflection 

The Group has continued to be successful in its traditional strengths i.e. the provision of successful, well-attended 

educational meetings as well as an active member network. The membership of the committee has diversified to more 

accurately reflect the varied areas of multidisciplinary work of our members e.g. increased representation of pharmacists 

specialising in care home services. 

The structured delegation of tasks to our expanded committee and the re-introduction of an annual face-to-face committee 

meeting will enable us to further develop alternative educational formats and to improve our links to other professional 

groups and our response to national consultation documents.

Requests for three community pharmacists for MHRA ad hoc expert groups have been successful through this forum (via 

RPS), facilitated by GH. At least two have been successful with specific expertise of the work involved.

Carey Tebby has retired from the committee. All other members re-committed for 2017. 





GH is the Chair of the RPS Panel of Fellows, a member of the RPS Faculty Board, and on the Pharmaceutical Sciences 

Advisory Panel. She is also a member of the MHRA CPS expert advisory group. GH has been involved in working with RPS 

around community pharmacist assessment in case based discussions for the Faculty* and the UKCPA work on the KIT 

(curricula) for national training programmes. 

Clive Jolliffe, previously Superintendant pharmacist for Morrisons, has attended several national community pharmacy 

boards and until recently was a CPPE tutor. 

Clive Jolliffe & Karen Gunnell are also members of the UKCPA Education &Training Group committee. 

Diane Harris is also a member of the UKCPA Pharmacy Infection Network . 

Valerie Sillito, opinion leader in Scotland as a community pharmacist, and represents community pharmacy on the RPS 

pharmaceutical sciences advisory panel. Represented the Community Group as expert adviser on the UKCPA work on 

Faculty* practice based assessments (REPP) . 

Jennifer Archer is an independent consultant in education and training nationally and previous deputy director of CPPE. 

Leadership 

Consultation response: NICE Community pharmacy promoting health and wellbeing, July 2016: GH submitted a response 

on behalf of UKCPA. 

GH contributed to RPS Faculty work on community pharmacy curricula. 

GH has been very involved in Faculty Board meetings and supporting UKCPA members working towards Faculty. 

GH ongoing work on antimicrobial resistance following the previous successful research which has been picked up by 

Public Health England to support changing practice. 

Management 

GH has facilitated the contribution of community pharmacists to national work eg MHRA ad hoc expert working groups. 

UKCPA strategy – GH represented the group at the strategy and GC meetings and teleconferences. 

Clive Jolliffe delivered a Management worksession at the UKCPA Conference in November 2016.

GH has ongoing successful work on antimicrobial resistance and the research has been taken up by Public Health England

Reflection 

We are a very small speciality which is split into two main specialities of IBD and Hepatology with practitioners practising in 

either one or both specialities. We continue to support both these sub-specialities as one interest group. 

The group had two very successful Masterclasses and multiple involvement with NICE this year. The commissioning of the 

Hepatology ODNs and the novel DAAs for hepatitis C by NHSE has taken up a considerable time and caused an ever 

increasing workload. This has also created opportunities for pharmacists to develop their role which reflected in new local 

pharmacy network being developed. The UKCPA Gastroenterology & Hepatology Group endeavours to support these 

networks wherever possible. 

The creation of the BVHPG is an exciting opportunity but needs to be affiliated to UKCPA and RPS in the same way as it is 

affiliated to BASL (British Association for the Study of the Liver). 

ECCO (European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation) was not able to support a pharmacist group but HPE (Hospital Pharmacy 

Europe) is communicating the idea of a Europe wide gastroenterology pharmacist group supporting this project with advice 

and publications.

Reflection 

The group has an active discussion forum on the website. In addition, since the setting up of the MSO network 

communication, opportunities to discuss medication safety issues with other Medication Safety expert pharmacists are 

provided by the monthly Webex conference. 

There is a need to disseminate information to more junior pharmacists, as medication safety is a generalist topic. However, 

this is difficult to achieve and study days and workshops addressing medication safety issues are less well attended by junior 

pharmacists than clinical sessions. 

We will aim to address this in our strategy for 2017.

Shelley Jones is part of the NHSE Immunoglobulin Working Group. 

Shelley Jones is the pharmacist representative on the Neuro CRG and Rachel Dorsey-Campbell is working with the 

Neuro CRG on an MS project including the disease modifying therapy pathway and stop criteria. 

Shelley Jones and Ben Dorward contributed to the development of a CPPE Focal Point package for epilepsy. 

Ben Dorward presented a talk on the challenges of medicines optimisation in epilepsy as a representative of the 

Neurosciences group at a Pharmacy Management conference in November 2015. He also adjudicated a poster award at 

that conference on behalf of UKCPA. 

The committee members are establishing links with key neurological charities to raise awareness of the UKCPA 

neurosciences group and establish links: 

Rachel Dorsey-Campbell has represented the UKCPA by her involvement in the MS Trust Forward View project. The 

UKCPA has endorsed the final document to be produced from this work. 

Joela Mathews and Shelley Jones are part of the Parkinson’s Excellence Network with Parkinson’s UK 

Joela Mathews has met with the Brain and Spine Foundation and is to attend their next meeting 

Joela Mathews attended the Association of British Neurologists (ABN) Autumn Conference to promote the UKCPA 

neurosciences group 

All committee members discuss the role of the UKCPA when meeting representatives from pharmaceutical companies. 

Leadership 

Rachel Dorsey-Campbell has represented the UKCPA for the MS Trust Forward View Project; she also received the 

award of outstanding pharmacist at the QuDoS in MS awards. 

Through Olivia Moswela, the group has fed into several NICE consultations. 


Joela Mathews gave a talk on multiple sclerosis at the April 2016 Clinical Pharmacy Congress on behalf of the 

Neuroscience group. 

Ben Dorward provided a talk on the peri-operative drug management of neurological diseases at the UKCPA Surgery & 

Theatres Group Masterclass in September 2016 

All committee members include their role as UKCPA committee members when providing teaching, such as 

undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy teaching, RPS LPF teaching. 

Joela Mathews is the group’s representative for the KIT curricula review. 





No research has been undertaken formally as part of the UKCPA although several members are research active. 

There is an ongoing project to map clinical pharmacy provision within UK neurosciences services.

Reflection 

The group has achieved significant output in the last year which is a fantastic achievement given that everybody is fitting 

this activity in and around their busy NHS roles. 

There still remains a high level of correspondence within the committee. We need to encourage some of this 

correspondence to take place on the UKCPA message boards to demonstrate to others the value of the group for this 

purpose. This may be further helped when the new website is functional. The group’s Twitter account is also very active 

with contributions from several committee members. 

Committee members have been active in making contact with other neuroscience pharmacists around the UK and it is 

becoming apparent there are a significant number of pharmacists. Some excellent work has been achieved in the field of MS 

to raise the profile of pharmacists; we are now starting to see care awards specifically for pharmacists in this field as a 

result. 

The major challenge to the group for preparing a Masterclass is the relative rarity of individual neurological conditions and a 

lack of national initiatives around them. The epilepsy presentation given by Ben Dorward at the Pharmacy Management 

conference had low attendance in comparison to other presentations in the areas of cardiovascular medicine, respiratory 

medicine and antimicrobial stewardship. However, the provisional plan is to provide a Masterclass on Epilepsy and 

Parkinson’s in 2017. 

Pain Management Group Annual Report

There are 1198 members registered on the online discussion group, an 8% increase on last year. 


There have not been any formal committee meetings this year but the group is engaged in regular email contact and 

communications. 


We have expanded the committee of the Pain Management Group this year – the first time we have had more than five 

members of the committee since its inception. We are still working through the logistics of the change and exactly how the 

members will each contribute. We have been very grateful for the support of other groups within UKCPA, especially Emma 

Cramp and the Pharmacy Infection Network, for their help in garnering support for us. 

Roger Knaggs is now Secretary of the British Pain Society Council and recently been awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the 

Faculty of Pain Medicine – normally reserved for medical doctors. 


Emma Davies has contributed to several NICE guideline consultations on behalf of the Pain Management Group, 

including the draft guideline for low back pain. 

Roger Knaggs is Faculty assessor for the RPS Faculty, spokesperson on pain management for the Royal Pharmaceutical 

Society and has contributed to several news items on pain and analgesia issues in the last year. He appeared on a BBC 

Panorama programme titled ‘Addicted to painkillers’ to discuss the rise in opioid prescribing in the UK. 

Emma Davies is REPP assessor for the RPS Faculty, committee member for the Primary Care and Community SIG of the 

British Pain Society and edits the SIG’s newsletter. 

Lee Wilson is a spokesperson on pain management for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. 

Emma Wilson contributed to the UKCPA Pre-operative medicines monograph project, launched in September 2016 and 

was responsible for the sections on opioid medications and analgesia. 

Yousaf Ahmad has been involved in the development of ‘Treat and Teach pain management’, a scheme in Scotland to 

develop the pain management skills of community and GP practice pharmacists. 

Roger Knaggs is a member of the International Association for Study of Pain Curricula Taskforce on Pharmacy 

Leadership 

Roger Knaggs is on the development group for guidelines for pain management in secure environments and the newly 

developed opioid prescribing resource for the British Pain Society and Public Health England. 

Emma Davies and Roger Knaggs will be developing the curricula for advanced practice in pain management following the 

publication of the advanced standards. 

Management 

Roger Knaggs is a member of the Faculty Accreditation Panel of the RPS. 


There have not been any Pain Management Masterclasses since the last annual report. However, we have two 

Masterclasses planned for 2017; one for chronic/primary care/community pain management which is planned for June 

2017, and the second is intended to have an acute sector/acute pain focus and is still in development. 

The Group Chair has been involved in discussion with APTUK about increasing the clinical role of pharmacy technicians 

in pain management and it is hoped this new relationship can be built upon, including a study day with APTUK towards 

the end of 2017. 




Emma Davies presented to Clinical Pharmacy Congress in April 2016 and was asked independently of UKCPA. However, 

she was introduced as Chair of the UKCPA Pain Management group, hopefully increasing the profile of the organisation. 

All senior members of the committee are involved in mentoring at a local level. Professor Knaggs is an RPS mentor. 

The committee are engaged with the developments linked to professional recognition and development of curricula. 


Emma Davies and Roger Knaggs frequently provide peer review for the Cochrane database of reviews and pain-related 

journals. 

The committee members have been publishing actively on relevant matters. These include the UKCPA newsletter In 

Practice, and Emma Davies and Roger Knaggs have made contributions to The Pharmacist magazine. 

Group funds 

None used. 


We have succeeded in increasing membership of the group and the committee as well. However, the benefits of doing this 

are still to be realised. We hope 2017 will be a positive year and allow the group to further raise its profile and involvement 

in the working of UKCPA. 


Our aim for the next 12 months is to organise two masterclasses, ideally working with other UKCPA groups and to 

contribute to the plan for National Training programmes, within and the development of specialist curriculum for pain 

management. 

Reflection 

Pain management is not regarded by all sections of pharmacy as a speciality in its own right as pharmacists in all sectors and 

specialities engage in aspects of it on a daily basis. The committee is only partly comprised of full-time pain specialists and 

in itself reflects the situation in clinical practice. The aim of the group should be to Improve the understanding of the core 

principles of managing pain in clinical practice as well as providing a forum for more specialist discussion.

There was a face to face committee meeting held in May 2016, and two further teleconferences in August 2016 and

In December 2015, David Ladenheim stepped down from his role as the Research and Development portfolio lead and David 

Sharpe stepped down from his role as the Consultations portfolio lead for Paediatrics. Laura Whitney returned from 

maternity leave in January 2016 to take up her position as Research and Development portfolio lead. 


Diane Ashiru-Oredope and Emma Cramp participated in the development of two new CPPE antimicrobial resistance and 

stewardship workbooks aimed at primary care pharmacists. 

Diane Harris contributed to development of the RCGP TARGET webinar series which will provide GPs with learning on 

optimising antibiotic use. 

Laura Whitney, Mark Gilchrist and Jacqueline Sneddon finalised Guidance on treatment of carbapenamase producing 

enterobacteriaceae which was started by Kelly Alexander several years ago. 

Mark Gilchrist and Laura Whitney were editors of a new book on Antimicrobial Stewardship published by Oxford 

University Press. Jacqueline Sneddon, Hayley Wickens Fiona Robb, Naomi Fleming and Esmita Charani also contributed 

chapters of the book.

Jacqueline Sneddon, Hayley Wickens and Mark Gilchrist reviewed the infection elements of the RPS Faculty/UKCPA 

Knowledge Interface Tool (KIT) for Advanced Core and Advanced Specialist practice, identifying areas for clarification 

and expansion; a review of the Foundation practice areas will follow. 

UKCPA PIN introduced a new Twitter hashtag for the PIN journal club (#UKCPAPINJC) in May 2016 which is being used to 

promote and share professional antimicrobial related information and the latest in clinical evidence. 

Management 

RPS Antimicrobial Expert Advisory Group: 

This group was set up in 2015 to formally respond to consultations and provide advice regarding antimicrobial 

related topics. The PIN Committee members that are part of this group are Jacqueline Sneddon, Philip Howard, Mark 

Gilchrist, Laura Whitney, Diane Harris, Hayley Wickens and Diane Ashiru-Oredope. Other PIN members include 

Kieran Hand, Harpal Dillon, Alison Cockburn, Esmita Charani and Paul Wade. 


Masterclasses 

UKCPA Pharmacy Infection Network held a Masterclass on ‘Action on Resistance’ – Tackling with antimicrobial 




stewardship. This took place on Friday 4th March in Birmingham. The event was attended by 80 delegates and had a 

waiting list of over 20 people. Feedback from delegates and sponsors was very positive. Sponsors were Astellas, 

Eumedica, IC Net and MSD.

Jacqueline Sneddon hosted an RPS session talk on Antimicrobial stewardship – how pharmacists are helping to combat 

antimicrobial resistance. Kieran Hand discussed Hospital treatment of community-acquired pneumonia and acute 

exacerbations of COPD: the evidence, while Emma Cramp spoke about Innovation within Antimicrobial stewardship. 

ECCMID, April 2016, Amsterdam 

The European Congress on Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Conference (ECCMID) took place in Amsterdam 

on 8th-10th April 2016. Some of the PIN committee members who presented posters are Diane Ashiru-Oredope, 

Jacqueline Sneddon, Phil Howard, Mark Gilchrist and Tejal Vaghela. Please see appendix for poster titles. 

European Association of Hospital Pharmacists, March 2016, Vienna 

The European Association of Hospital Pharmacists Annual Conference held in Vienna during March 2016 was attended 

by Jacqueline Sneddon, Mark Gilchrist and Hayley Wickens. They each ran workshop sessions on optimising 

antimicrobial therapy and the role of pharmacists in addressing AMR. 


Committee member Jon Urch wrote articles for all issues of In Practice during 2016. 

Hayley Wickens and Laura Whitney judged the Astellas Antimicrobial Award 2016. 

Laura Whitney peer reviewed an application for the UKCPA research grant. 

Diane Ashiru-Oredope, Jacqueline Sneddon and Emma Cramp judged some of the entries for the Antibiotic Guardian 

Awards.

The PIN committee has completed the majority of aims and objectives from the previous year. We are working towards all 

of the committee members achieving Faculty status with the RPS and this may become a pre-requisite for future 

recruitment of PIN committee members.

Contribute to the National Training Programme 

Support the RPS Faculty assessment process. 

Reflection 

PIN has had another successful year with the committee structure working well. With many of the current committee 

entering its fourth year in post, succession planning is becoming important to ensure the continued success of the group. 

The Chair and Secretary posts will be discussed at the next committee meeting. 

PIN has demonstrated commitment to supporting the RPS Faculty, its assessment process and the associated national 

training programme development.

Management 

The Respiratory Group were the first organisation to publically advise that inhaled medicines should be prescribed by brand 

name to ensure that patients receive the correct inhaler device and prevent inadvertent device switches, which may result 

in adverse outcomes in asthma. The group worked with the UK Inhaler Group to reinforce this position. As a result, the 

British Thoracic Society / SIGN Asthma 2016 guidelines made a good practice recommendation stating “Generic prescribing 

of inhalers should be avoided as this might lead to people with asthma being given an unfamiliar inhaler device which they 

are not able to use properly.”

Feedback was positive, with the majority of responders reporting that the Masterclass objectives were either fully met 

or exceeded. At least two thirds of responders rated each speaker as good or excellent.

The group has continued to provide a range of education sessions through and on behalf of the UKCPA, and has been 

involved with reviewing a range of national and NICE guidelines and technology appraisals. 

The group is currently working on the Advanced Curricula as part of the Knowledge Interface Tool. 

The Group has been active on Twitter; improving communication, sharing resources and updating followers on latest 

research and current best practice. The Respiratory Group currently has 525 followers. 

Committee members are promoting the UKCPA Respiratory Group amongst primary and secondary care colleagues at 

pharmacy conferences and meetings. 


To provide a joint Journal of Medicines Optimisation (JOMO)/UKCPA National Respiratory Workshop in February 2017 in 

Birmingham. 

To review the feasibility for providing regional Masterclasses based on the JOMO/UKCPA Respiratory Workshop. 

To complete the update of the Core Advanced Curriculum for respiratory specialist pharmacists for the RPS Knowledge 

Interface Tool.

A meeting of three committee members took place in September 2016 in Manchester where plans for the next 18 months 

were discussed, and a further meeting of four members later that month in London. Regular email conversations also take 

place. 





Katharina Floss is representing the UKCPA at the Royal College of Anaesthetists steering committee for their National 

Audit Project (NAP6) on perioperative anaphylaxis. 

Sophie Blow and Tracy Percival are representing the UKCPA in peer reviewing the Royal College of Anaesthetists’ 

Guidelines for the Development for the Provision of Anaesthetic Services document, on the pre-operative assessment 

chapter. 

Katharina Floss and Tracy Percival are representing the UKCPA on the advisory group for the Royal College of 

Anaesthetists’ Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group. As part of this, Katharina Floss took part in a short-life working group on 

Safe storage of medicines. 

Collaboration with BMJ learning in peer reviewing an article, and subsequently helping them find pharmacists to peer 

review other articles. 

Sukeshi Makhecha, Sophie Blow and Katharina Floss commented on the 2016 GPAS document from the RCoA. 

Neetu Bansal has been called upon by NICE as an expert advisor on the following drug appraisals: 

Leadership 

The Group has just completed a project to provide evidence-based, best practice advice on the management of perioperative 

medications. The Handbook of Peri-Operative Medicines was published in late September 2016 at the Royal 

Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) in London, and has been endorsed by the RPS, the Royal College of Physicians and 

Surgeons of Glasgow, and the Pre-operative Association. 

Management 

The ongoing peri-operative medications project has involved various Committee members in organisational, writing and 

reviewing roles. 


The Group presented a Masterclass on medication in the peri-operative period in September 2016. 

Two sessions were also delivered at the UKCPA Conference in November 2016. 

Neetu Bansal and Richard Adams peer reviewed an article on surgical practice for F1 doctors published by the BMJ.

Reflection 

This has been a challenging year for the group, with the peri-operative medications guidelines dominating the group’s 

activities. Over 50 members of the Group were involved in the production of these guidelines in one capacity or another.

How we are governed 

Strategic decisions are made by the General Committee 

which consists of elected members drawn from the 

membership. Representatives from our education 

groups are also invited to attend General Committee 

meetings. The General Manager and the General 

Secretary also attend. 

A Board of six Trustees oversees the running of the 

organisation and ensures it meets the needs of the 

members. 

The Business Management Group consists of the UKCPA 

Officers, a Trustee representative, the General 

Manager and the General Secretary. They meet 

regularly to make decisions on behalf of the General 

Committee.
