Tippi Toes presents classes for children 18 months up to the age of 3 years. Music, movement, balance and basic dance steps are introduced in
a fun, friendly and positive manner. This class includes mom, dad or another loved one participating along with the little dancer. Our teachers will
keep the music and curriculum moving along while parents take an active role in encouraging, supporting and keeping the little dancer on track.
Our mission is to develop a love of dancing in children by creating a positive experience that promotes healthy living habits, builds self-confidence,
and instills a love for others. Four - 30 minute classes.
Attention Dance Parents
Experience has shown that your child learns more and performs better when parents are not in the
classroom. For this reason, we designate the last class of every session as “Parent Observation Day”.
You are welcome to observe your child’s progress at this time.
Fall Soccer League
4 & 5 year olds through 8th Grade • Leawood City Park Soccer Fields
The Leawood Parks and Recreation Soccer league is a recreational league that stresses the
development of individual skills with an emphasis on maximum participation and enjoyment of
all players in a "non-competitive" atmosphere.
The league does not provide coaches and relies strongly upon dedicated parent volunteers to
fill these positions. Individuals will be placed on teams according to school location, whenever
What is The First Tee?
The First Tee is a part of the
World Golf Foundation and is
supported by all the major golf
organizations in the country
(PGA, PGA Tour, LPGA, USGA,
and The Masters). There are
over 200 The First Tee Chapters
around the US and in six foreign countries. The First
Tee has reached over 4.7 million kids since 1997.
What’s so special about The First Tee?
The First Tee is a junior golf program with a difference!
Like all other junior golf programs, kids have FUN while
learning how to play golf by the rules. The First Tee goes
one important step further by including a Life Skills curriculum.
What are Life Skills?
Life Skills are just that: A set of skills that help kids
learn golf more easily, but can also be used away from
the golf course at home, school or in social situations.
How do the instructors teach Life Skills?
Life and Golf Skills are taught in a seamless fashion
during the course of a regular golf class. So learning
Life Skills is just another part of the FUN.
Has The First Tee been successful?
YES! Research conducted by the Universities of
Nevada - Las Vegas and Florida found that First Tee
participants increased their knowledge of these
important Life Skills, Additionally, 74% of The First
Tee parents found their children showed an increase
in their confidence as well as positive changes in
communication skills and responsibility, 66% saw
an increase in social skills and 52% noted improved
grades. Additional research conducted by The
University of Virginia in 2005 shows that 70-100%
young people use Life Skills away from the course
(percentage is dependent on the specific Life Skill).
How does the Greater Kansas City Chapter
compare to others?
Greater Kansas City is one of the largest The First Tee
chapters, with 10 in-school and programming facilities
and in excess of 2,600 kids served in 2016.
The First Tee - Player Level
All participants must be at least 7 years old at the start of the first class. Golfers at the PLAYer
level will generally need to complete approximately 30 hours of instruction plus certification to
advance to the PAR level. PLAYers are exposed to the game of golf through purposeful play that
helps them understand “what to do” before “how to do it”.
Golf Skills Progression
• Develop skills from the green back (putting >short-game>full-swing)
• Modify games/activities to match skill progression by:
• Using introductory golf equipment • Using larger, softer balls • Making targets larger & moving closer
• Explore the same general skills across levels, but more in-depth as players progress
• Target-oriented • Golf equipment • Pre-swing • Distance-control • Balance • Impact • Trajectory • Curvature
The First Tee Program
The First Tee - Par Level
Golfers eligible for the PAR level must be at least 9 years of age by the start of their first class and will have completed 30 hours of instruction plus
certification at the PLAYER level. PAR level participants begin to experience purposeful practice with a continued emphasis on purposeful play. This design
sandwiches skill practice between an initial game that shows why a skill is needed and is followed by another game, which emphasizes the skill previously
practiced.
Golf Skills Progression
• Explore the same general skills across levels, but more in-depth as players progress
• Target-oriented • Golf equipment • Pre-swing • Distance-control • Balance • Impact • Trajectory • Curvature
The First Tee - Birdie Level
Golfers eligible for the BIRDIE level will be at least 12 years of age by the start of their first class and have completed approximately 18 hours
of instruction and certification in the PAR level. BIRDIE level participants will focus on ‘purposeful practice/purposeful play/purposeful practice’,
approach. This design sandwiches skill practice between an initial game that shows why a skill is needed and is followed by another game, which
emphasizes the skill previously practiced.
Ironwoods Challenge Course
The Ironwoods Challenge Course is a state-of-the-art team development and recreation facility in the 115 acre Ironwoods Park, located in south
Leawood. The course is open for programs April through October. Programs range from 2-hour recreation climbs to day-long teambuilding programs.
Ironwoods Challenge Course is comprised of low and high elements. Low elements (Lows) are activities that take place on or low to the ground. High
elements (Highs) consist of activities that occur at a height where harnesses, ropes, and other specialty equipment is needed. Recreation programs
range from 2-hour to multiple-hour programs. Birthday parties, scouting events, organized sport teams and group rentals can all utilize one of the
three 50-foot tall climbing structures. Trained facilitators will provide all necessary equipment and instruction for a fun, adventurous climb.
CAROLINA T-WALL
(Rock Wall)
▪ Over 4,000 feet of climbable space
with 12-top rope routes.
▪ Climbs range from Beginner,
Intermediate, Advanced and Expert.
ALPINE TOWER
▪ A 50-foot tall climbing structure built
out of utility poles, rope ladders, nets,
dangling logs and climbing holds.
Numerous activities for the summit.
▪ Multiple climbs yield a variety of new
challenges to be discovered.
CARIBBEAN COURSE
▪ Explore Leawood’s one of a kind
Caribbean Course!
▪ Three 50-foot tall tree houses, each
of which is separated by individual
elements. The Burma Bridge, the
Double Cat-walk, and the Multi-line
Traverse make for a high-altitude
challenge.
TEAMBUILDING
▪ Half-day or full-day teambuilding
programs focus on problem-solving
tasks, presented through low and/
or high elements and various group
activities and games.
▪ Opportunities to discuss how the
activities are relevant to their work,
school or social lives.
Teambuilding programs assist groups to enhance cooperation among members, improve communication skills, gain trust, improve problem solving,
allow for new ways to resolve conflicts and enhance leadership. Teambuilding programs also help individuals increase their willingness to take appropriate
risks, increase logical reasoning, improve reflective thinking, and promote a positive view of individual self concept.
Escape the city and venture to Ironwoods Park for your next challenge. Your program will be tailored just for you and your group. We can even bring our
teambuilding programs to your location (Kansas only) with our portable equipment.
While perceived risk is one of the key elements in any adventure activity, the Ironwoods Challenge Course is always focused on safety. Knowledge
of the activity, careful planning and good judgment are exercised by our well trained facilitators. Participants’ commitment to listening to
instructions and being mindful of safety during the program is important. Our structures are inspected each month during detailed maintenance
as well as a yearly inspection by a professional, certified by the ACCT (Association for Challenge Course Technology).
Information on program availability and pricing is available at 913.696.7772.
Liability release and health information forms required to be signed by a parent if child
is under 18. Climbers under 12 must have an adult present.
Earth Day Celebration
Saturday, April 22 • 10 am- 5 pm
14701 Mission Road • 66224
Prairie Oak Nature Center will be celebrating Earth Day!
We will have family friendly activities, games and crafts. There will be helpful
information about the three R's "Reducing, Reusing and Recycling".
The Nature Center is committed to educating all visitors about our
environment and will continue to be a resource for the citizens of Leawood.
Update Your
Home Owners Association
The City of Leawood wants to have Up-to-Date Contact Information for your HOA.
HOAs can provide public or private information online. It’s simple and beneficial.
http://www.leawood.org/homes/default.aspx
Why Update HOA Information with the City?
Here are just some of the real-life examples of why regularly-updated HOA information is important to your HOA and its residents.
• Enables the City to reach someone in the event that an urgent situation on HOA property has been reported to the City
• A significant water leak on HOA property
• Damage to HOA property resulting from an accident
• Helps to make HOA communities aware of proposed zoning changes in their immediate area and allows them time to respond:
• A zoning exception request by a car dealership seeking to locate nearby
• A request for public input to City plans for expanding area bike and walking trails in or around your HOA
• A request for public input from HOA residents that border the 200+ acres zoned for development along the 135th Street Corridor area.
• Enables the City to provide advanced notice of street sidewalk closures repairs to be provided that may impact HOA residents.
• Invites HOA board members to the City's annual Sustainability Summit and Home Owners Association Meeting
What Options Are Available to Your HOA?
Private
The City of Leawood maintains two separate data systems for Home Owner Association information, one or both of which may be of
interest to your HOA. The first system is a private system that is used for internal City of Leawood purposes only and is not viewable by the
general public. The City is requesting that all HOAs maintain up-to-date contact information in the City’s private system by going to the
following link: HOA Contact Form - enough info to the "link"?
Public
The second system is a public system, which is provided as a convenience to residents of Leawood and can be used by HOAs to
communicate directly to their residents and others in the Leawood community. For HOAs interested in making some or all of its contact
information available to the public, they may select “public” when entering their contact information. Additionally, the HOA may opt to
include other HOA information including their Articles and By-Laws or Restrictions, etc. If you would like to request that your HOA post or
update information to this site please call Mark Andrasik at (913) 663-9195 or by email to Marka@leawood.org.
What HOA Information Is Important to Provide?
For non-urgent situations such as City maintenance work or re-zoning requests to the City, the City will provide information to HOAs via
e-mail. However, in rare and urgent situations, the City may need to make contact with the HOA more quickly. In such situations, phone
contact information is best.
How Can Your HOA Provide this Information?
In order to communicate with you on matters that are likely to be of significant interest to your HOA, we need to know how to reach you.
Please check the HOA Contact Form to provide information to the City.
THE LEAWOOD FOUNDATION
The Leawood Foundation provides resources for:
Beautification of our Parks, Community Education, Historic Preservation, Accessibility/Safety
OUR MISSION
The Leawood Foundation funds cultural and educational amenities in our
community that might not otherwise be funded with tax dollars.
With the help of many generous donors, the
Leawood Foundation was able to complete one
2016 project goal of Beautifying Parks/Public Areas
and begin a very significant one that Promotes
Inclusiveness.
ENHANCE "LEAWOOF" DOG PARK
Over $25,000 was raised to complete the purchase
and installation of three shade structures and
benches, and the very popular multi-station
agility course inside the heavily used dog park.
These amenities will provide covered seating for
the masters of Leawood's canines and hours of
learning and play for dogs.
COMMUNITY CORNER 2017 SPRING/SUMMER
38
BUILD "PLAY FOR ALL"
The All Inclusive Playground in Leawood City Park will soon become a reality with
construction nearly complete.
Thanks to our generous Leawood citizens and many local businesses, combined
with a recent commitment from Variety Children’s Charity of Greater Kansas
City, we are within $20,000 of our goal to complete the playground that will
provide opportunities for Physical, Communicative, Social/Emotional and
Sensory development through play. Please consider a monetary gift to help us
reach our goal.
A spring 2017 grand opening is planned.

Unleash the “nature bug” in you with a visit to the Prairie Oak Nature Center! The center houses nature exhibits such as mounted animals,
live reptiles, amphibians and a large fish aquarium. Our reference library is filled with books, magazines, and a section of children’s nature
books. Grab a book and relax in our library for an afternoon. Admission is free!
We offer fun environmental education programs for preschool and elementary age children. In addition to these programs, our staff
will work with your group to provide a personal program to meet your needs. Please schedule your program at least three weeks in advance, as
program times are limited.
This year’s theme for Prairie Oak Nature Center is “Seeds and Growth”.
Our activities will have a focus on gardening, pollinators, sustainability and the food web. During early spring Prairie Oak Nature Center will host
a seed library where home gardeners can choose from a variety of seeds to begin their seeds indoors. During the Months of April and May the
nature center will host a series of container planting teaching seminars. We have invited representatives from Monarch Watch, local beekeepers,
and horticulturists to educate us on emerging trends in home gardening. Prairie Oak Nature Center is also piloting a Children’s Garden program.
Families are encouraged to enroll early in these programs that begin in late spring and will last up to the harvest. When the vegetables ripen we
will share the harvest. In observance of Earth Day we will provide Monarch Butterflies and small habitats to watch the larvae change into adult
butterflies. We will announce over social media when caterpillars become available.
