Learn to Swim Program<br />

LESSONS 2 Weeks/Eight - 30 Minute Lessons Taught by Leawood Aquatic Center Staff<br />

Fee $45/Resident Discounted Fee $40<br />

Parent-Tot<br />

Ages 6 to 18 months • Min 6 Max 12 • Ratio 1:12<br />

• Parent/Caregiver must attend each class<br />

and be in the water with his/her child.<br />

• Water orientation and comfort is taught.<br />

• Parents learn safety and drowning<br />

prevention.<br />

• The class does not teach children how to<br />

swim or survive in the water.<br />

• Water diapers are required for all tots.<br />

Preschool - Level 1<br />

Ages 2 to 3 years • Min 4 Max 6 • Ratio: 1:6<br />

• Designed to help children who are<br />

apprehensive or new to the aquatic<br />

environment.<br />

• Learn safe pool behavior.<br />

How to Choose<br />

the Correct Swim Level<br />

1. Identify the class corresponding to your child’s ability<br />

2. Identify the skill achievement and choose the best fit<br />

for your child’s skill level.<br />

3. Identify the session (1, 2, 3 or 4).<br />

4. Identify the class time (varies).<br />

Important: Children may be moved to another class<br />

if the instructor feels they will grow and benefit in a<br />

different level or class.<br />

Preschool - Level 2<br />

Ages 2 to 3 years • Min 4 Max 6 • Ratio: 1:6<br />

• Designed for a child who is independently<br />

able to put head under water and blow<br />

bubbles.<br />

• Learn safe pool behavior.<br />

Tadpole<br />

Ages 4 years & up • Min 4 Max 12 • Ratio: 1:6<br />

•No skill level is required.<br />

• Parents are not in the water with the<br />

students.<br />

• Learn safe pool behavior and a positive<br />

attitude.<br />

• Learn to put head in the water, blowing<br />

bubbles and floating with assistance from<br />

an instructor.<br />

Goldfish<br />

Ages 4 years & up • Min 4 Max 18 • Ratio: 1:6<br />

• Must be able to put face in the water and<br />

blow bubbles unassisted.<br />

• Must be comfortable floating on front,<br />

back, and side with assistance.<br />

• Learn to float and recover to vertical.<br />

Seahorse<br />

Ages 4 years & up • Min 4 Max 18 • Ratio: 1:6<br />

• Must float comfortably on front and back<br />

without assistance. Combine arm and leg<br />

action. Push off and swim at least 15 feet<br />

using combined arms and legs unassisted.<br />

• Will work on stroke technique to be able<br />

to accomplish 25 yards of swimming by<br />

the end of the lesson.<br />

Seal<br />

Ages 4 years & up • Min 4 Max 12 • Ratio: 1:6<br />

• The student will be able to swim 25 yards<br />

(1 length) in freestyle using side breathing,<br />

and swim backstroke for 25 yards.<br />

• Must be willing to try to dive head first from<br />

the side of the pool.<br />

Marlin<br />

Ages 4 years & up • Min 4 Max 16 • Ratio: 1:6<br />

•Be able to perform a standing dive from the<br />

side, swim breaststroke for 25 yards with<br />

no scissors kick, side stroke for 20 yards,<br />

elementary back stroke, front crawl with<br />

rhythmic breathing for 50 yards and tread<br />

water for 1 minute.<br />

Dolphin<br />

Ages 4 years & up • Min 4 Max 16 • Ratio: 1:6<br />

• The student will be able to swim<br />

breaststroke for 50 yards, crawl stroke for<br />

100 yards, butterfly for 10 yards, and do<br />

breaststroke open turn and crawl stroke<br />

flip turns.<br />

Rain Out Information<br />

Lessons will be canceled due to inclement weather and/or lightning.<br />

Cancellation decisions will be made 30 minutes prior to the start of<br />

each class (i.e. Do not assume that classes will be canceled at 10:50 am<br />

because they were canceled at 9:00 am).<br />

Dry Lesson/Safety Day will be held upon the first inclement weather<br />

day. If there should be two inclement days, the second class will be<br />

made up on Friday of the week the weather occurred. More than 2<br />

days of inclement weather in one week, lessons will not be made up.<br />
