CHILDREN 2017 SPRING/SUMMER<br />
Muddy Buddies<br />
Introduce your child to nature in a safe, fun and creative environment<br />
filled with nature lessons, crafts, hands-on activities and discovery time<br />
on the trail. Children are encouraged to explore nature at their own<br />
pace and comfort level using tactile perception, fine motor skills, and<br />
senses. Parents are encouraged to take the role of teacher to help their<br />
children become comfortable with their natural environment. Nine - 1<br />
hour classes.<br />
Children's Garden<br />
The Nature Center will pilot a children's garden in the spring.<br />
Gardening times will be from 9am-11am Tuesday through Friday from<br />
April 25th -June 30th. Participants are not required to be present for<br />
the entire shift and families are welcome to attend anytime between<br />
these hours. Learn basic gardening techniques for sustainable, organic<br />
farming. Participants will learn how to plant, water, fertilize and care for<br />
a small flower, vegetable and herb garden. If the harvest is successful,<br />
the first week of July we will demonstrate how to make ketchup,<br />
salsa and sauces with cooking and tasting. All children need to be<br />
accompanied by an adult. Families are encouraged to attend at least<br />
twice a week throughout the growing season but daily attendance is<br />
more than welcome.<br />
Bats and Owls<br />
Learn about these wonderful creatures and their significant role<br />
in the web of life. Great for families and those interested in beginning<br />
or furthering their knowledge about our nighttime flying creatures. This<br />
class instructs participants about the special qualities surrounding bats<br />
and owls. Includes a hike to locate potential habitats. Taught by Granny<br />
Mary and Amanda. One - 2 hour class.<br />
Learn to Fish<br />
The first 15 minutes will be spent indoors reviewing the basic types<br />
of fishing tackle, species of fish in Kansas and safety rules. Equipment<br />
and bait are provided or you can bring your own. An Adult MUST<br />
accompany any child under the age of 12 (registration fee is not<br />
charged for one adult chaperon per child, each additional adult is<br />
required to register). One - 1.5 hour class.<br />
Eclipse View<br />
There will be several eclipses that pass over the US in the 21st<br />
century. This is only the first, but it has been a long time coming! If<br />
you miss this one, you will only need to wait seven years for another.<br />
It's true - but why wait?! Besides, the total eclipse in 2024 and can only<br />
be seen if you are in Mexico. Join us at the Prairie Oak Nature Center<br />
and enjoy what will truly be considered "The Great American Eclipse!"<br />
Prairie Oak Nature Center will provide a safe viewing environment for<br />
the Eclipse. Viewing glasses are provided for everyone that registers.<br />
All children must be accompanied by an adult. The event will begin at<br />
11:00 am with the eclipse reaching its darkest point at 12:08 pm. We ask<br />
that all participants be at the viewing area at that time to receive proper<br />
instructions. Please use every precaution if you choose to view the event<br />
at home. One - 2 hour class.<br />
Container Gardening Weekday<br />
Prairie Oak Nature Center will offer a 5 week seminar on container<br />
gardening for flowers, herbs and vegetables. Container gardening<br />
is a great solution for those that have limited space in their yards or<br />
balconies. The first seminar will cover plant selection, soil and compost,<br />
watering and initial care. Remaining classes will include guest speakers<br />
on pollinators, sustainable agriculture and best green practices. A limited<br />
selection of plants and seeds will be offered as part of the program. Soil<br />
and compost will be provided. Participants will be required to bring their<br />
own containers to plant. Each class is one hour in length. This program<br />
covers the same subjects as the weekend class and is oriented towards<br />
families with younger children. You are welcome to bring a snack while<br />
we discuss gardening topics while tasting new herbs and vegetables<br />
before we begin the "dirt" work. Five - 1 hour classes.<br />

be offered as part of the program. Soil and compost will be provided.<br />
Participants are required to bring their own containers for planting. This<br />
program covers the same subjects as the weekday class and is oriented<br />
towards more adventurous tastes and for those that can provide higher<br />
level of plant care. Five - 1 hour sessions.<br />
